Less is more

Less is more: an architecture espousingreduction and the formal integrationof technical/functional items manifestsitself in, for instance, non-rebated doors.FSB has been setting standards forsome time now with a range of flushfurniture that has been embraced inequal measure by architects and design-conscious house builders. With theappearance of its 2008|09 Manual, thecompany is presenting a refined, con-ceptually even more advanced genera-tion of flush products that extend thearchitectural approach of formal reduc-tionism to doors and windows as awhole. But, enough said, the followingpages speak volumes about FSB’s flushhardware solutions. The overview along-side indicates exactly which solutionsare at your disposal.

It is not out of modestythat we set our fittingsso deep as to be virtu-ally imperceptible.Rather, FSB is echoingtrends in architecturetowards reducing struc-tures and functionaldetail to what is ab-solutely necessary.

Technical prerequisites:

The door must be at least 45 mm thick. With rebated doors, the position of thelock mortise needs to be borne in mind. The recess for the rose needs to be55.6 mm in diameter, centred on thelock follower, and routed out to a depthof 7 mm. The remaining material be-tween the bottom of the recess and thelock case is required to be stable andfirm enough to ensure secure fasteningwithout any pressure being exerted up-on the lock. For the purpose of accom-modating the lugs, boreholes 9 mm indiameter and at 38 mm centres needto be drilled to a depth of at least 7 mm– please use the FSB 0460 universaltemplate for this.

The male section of the lever handlefurniture is pre-assembled for insertioninto the prepared recesses.

It is secured by means of the AGL® Pluscarrier unit on the female handle side. The proven AGL® Plus assembly tech-nique involving a fixing lever and bayo-net locking is adopted for final assembly.

Order details required:

Technical prerequisites:

The door must be 38 – 44 mm thick. Please bear the position of the lock mor-tise in mind. The recess for the roseneeds to be 55.6 mm in diameter, cen-tred on the lock follower, and routed outto a depth of 3 mm. The remaining ma-terial between the bottom of the recessand the lock case is required to be sta-ble and firm enough to ensure securefastening without any pressure beingexerted upon the lock. Drill fixing holeson both sides (Ø 9 mm) with the aid ofthe FSB 0460 universal template. Thenexpand the holes for the handle and keyroses drilled on the clip-on side (= lead-ing face) to a diameter and depth of12 mm. Assembly involves first insert-ing the threaded bushes welded ontothe roses on the threaded-side into the9 mm boreholes and screwing themtight from the other side.

This is performed by means of specialsleeves pressed into the 12 mm bore-holes on the opposite side, which sub-sequently also accommodate the clipson the roses on the clip-on side. A largestabilising washer is used to distributeforces equally and help position thespecial sleeves while they are being se-cured. The door handle is fitted in theproven FSB manner.

Order details required:

Open and closedrecessed pulls

FSB offers a formally and functionallyinnovative hardware solution for slidingdoors in the form of closed and openrecessed pulls. Made in stainless steeland aluminium, the new handles takeup the architectural trend towards flushintegration of technical/functional fea-tures.

Blanking flap: smooth as you like

Our new closed flush pulls ensure a uni-form appearance for the door leaf. Theoperating aperture is always blankedout by a flap that springs neatly into theclosed position when the hardware isnot being used. Two modes of assemblyare possible: the shallow outside edgemay be surface-mounted to the door orbe fully recessed.

The handles are designed in such away that untidily or inaccurately routededges can be concealed by meansof their outside edge when surface-mounted. But the fittings really comeinto their own if completely flush re-cessed. Hardware and door are suf-fused into a single entity – the door’sdesign credentials are significantly en-hanced.

The closed version boasts more thanjust aesthetic qualities, though. Theuser soon learns to appreciate the play-ful pleasure of flicking the flap alter-nately to the left and right. The leaf orframe is machined to accept the hard-ware, which is then clipped or glued inplace as required. Flush pulls are gen-erally fitted to timber doors.

Right pull for every door

FSB manufactures small flush pulls forlightweight doors, as well as larger vari-ants for heavy-duty doors, in square/rectangular and round/oblong designsrespectively. Round flush pull 4254 re-quires a cut-out just 17 mm in depth, for example. It is just the job for small, lightweight sliding doors as well as forfitted furnishings or furniture in general.Customised forms of external stylingand integrated keyways (warded [BB],CH, europrofile [PZ], oval cylinder [OZ)or round cylinder [RZ] depending onthe lock used) are also individuallyavailable.

Flush armoured roses

moreover – both versions accordinglyhave an S2 classification under DIN EN1906. A further distance of 27.5 mmfrom the lock centre to the inside of thedoor is required to be able to flush-fitthe inside rose too. This gives rise to aminimum door thickness of 56.5 mm,which is merely theoretical in nature, however: the crucial dimensions forflush-fitting purposes are the 33.5 mmand 29 mm already referred to. Theflush-recessing of hardware necessitatesrouting out an area 61.5 mm in diameterand 12.5 mm deep on the outside of thedoor and an area 56 mm in diameterand 7 mm deep on the inside. The lugboreholes (Ø 9 mm) need to be 38 mmapart and at least 7 mm deep on bothsides. The areas machined subsequent-ly require sealing – particularly on theoutside of the door – so as to guaranteereliable, long-term protection againstmoisture and wetness (e.g. driving rain).

Since flush fitting has no bearing onthe Security Class, armoured roses canof course also be allowed to project bya few millimetres or, indeed, they canbe “classically” surface-mounted, a so-lution every bit as visually impressivegiven the elemental geometry imbuing7396. Similarly, the client can dispensewith inward flush fixing so as to har-monise the rose with classic hardwareon all other internal doors. Please re-quest solutions of this kind individually. These options and a wide variety ofavailable materials open up the greatestpossible degree of flexibility as regardsdesign and price to fabricators and ar-chitects seeking to fulfil bespoke cus-tomer aspirations.

7396 2010

It is the distance from the lock centreto the outside of the door as opposedto the door’s thickness that ultimatelydetermines whether 7396 Series ar-moured roses can be flush-fitted: saiddistance needs to be at least 33.5 mmin the case of FSB 7396 1010 and amodest 29 mm in the case of FSB7396 2010.

The lower dimension for 7396 2010 isdue to the securing disc being omitted, making 7396 2010 a first-class choicein cases involving awkward dimensionalconfigurations as regards door thick-ness and lock position: where a door isoverly thin or the position of the lockless than ideal, 7396 2010 facilitatescompensation of cylinder projections upto 4.5 mm greater and door thicknessesup to 4.5 mm less than with the 73961010 model. Omitting the securingdisc does not affect the Security Class,

Universal template

0460Complementing its broad range of spe-cial-purpose templates, FSB has de-veloped a universal template containingalmost all borehole layouts in use. Thisuniversal template is an essential toolfor any professional installer. Further-more, it is ideal for preparing the fixingholes for flush furniture and roses, since– like the FSB 0462 routing jig – it isprecision-aligned over lock follower andkeyway.

Technical Notes

All details given in this brochure drawon the latest engineering practice andthe experience we have gained in fittingflush furniture to a variety of types ofdoor.

With such a wide variety of types anddesigns of door on the market, however,FSB cannot make specific pronounce-ments regarding how suitable any givendoor is for the fitting of flush furniture.

Suitability of doors for the fitting offlush furniture and roses

Doors should be used which, in the lockarea at least (minimum width 120 mmfrom forend), feature timbering morerugged than, for instance, tubular parti-cle board. Solid wood products such asmultiplex, laminated timber board, ply-wood or solid wood are preferable.

The remaining material between therecess and the lock surface must bestable and firm enough to ensure thehardware can be fastened without ex-erting pressure on the lock. A remain-ing wall thickness of 5 mm is to beensured for solid-wood and multiplexdesigns and of 7 mm for plywood andlaminated wood. This applies both tonon-rebated and rebated doors, andboth to flush roses (door thicknessesfrom 38 – 44 mm) and flush furniture(door thicknesses of 45 mm upwards).

The remaining material be-tween the recess and the locksurface must be stable andfirm enough to ensure thehardware can be fastenedwithout exerting pressure onthe lock.

General point:Doors should be used which,in the lock area at least (min-imum width 120 mm fromforend), feature timberingmore rugged than, for ins-tance, tubular particle board.Solid wood products such asmultiplex, laminated timberboard, plywood or solid woodare preferable.

· Insert the centring device into the boreholes in the timber routing jig and placethe assembly against the door, slotting the guide pinson the centring device into the lock follower and euro-profile cylinder keyhole(or warded lock keyhole) respectively.

· Secure the timber routing jigto the door using C-clamps.

· Now remove the centring device and rout out the recess to a diameter of 55.6mm and a depth of 3 mm (cutter 20 mm Ø, ring 30 mm Ø).
