“Worry about words, Bobby. Your grandmother is right.

For, whatever else you may do, you will be using words always. All

day, and every day, words matter.

Though you live in a barrel and speak to nobody but yourself, words

matter. For words are the tools of thought, and you will find often that

you are thinking badly because you are using the wrong tools…”

(A.P. Herbert, What a Word! Methuen, 1935)

We automatically know that “sows and bucks” sounds like “thousand bucks”.a)We hear the similarity between “s” and “th”b)We hear that “and” sounds like the second syllable of “thousand”c)We know that “buck” means either a male deer or is a slang term for a dollar.

Page 8: Lesson 1

Have you ever seen a horsefly?

We automatically know that “horse fly” could either be a combination of two nouns meaning a type of insect, or a phrase composed of a noun “horse” and a verb “fly”
