Compare and Contrast Read the selection below. Whales Are Not Fish! Fish and whales both swim in the sea. They have two eyes and both have fins and tails. However, the tail of a fish is vertical, and a whale’s tail is horizontal. Fish and whale fins are different, too. Whales have bumps on their fins. This actually makes them go faster. Scientists have copied this design to make better engines! A main difference between whales and fish is the fact that whales are mammals. While fish have gills, whales have lungs like you and me. They must come up to the surface of the water to breathe. They open a blowhole at the top of their heads to take in air. The blowhole is a watertight cover that helps them let out air and quickly takes it back in before they go under the water again. Fish lay eggs. Because whales are mammals, they give birth to live young. Whales also care for their young. We are still learning about how whales communicate with each other and how they travel. Whales Are Not Fish!Fish and whales both swim in the

have fins and tails. However, the tail

of a fish is vertical, and a whale’s tail

is horizontal. Fish and whale fins are

different, too. Whales have bumps

on their fins. This actually makes

them go faster. Scientists have copied

A main difference between

whales and fish is the fact that whales

are mammals. While fish have gills,

whales have lungs like you and me.

HipposThe hippopotamus lives in rivers

and lakes in Africa. Hippos remain

cool during the hot day by staying

in the water or mud. Female hippos

even give birth in the water. At

dusk, hippos come out of the water to

graze for food. For this reason, the

hippopotamus is called semi-aquatic.

The word aquatic means “related to

water.”

Even though they look like they

might be related to pigs, hippos

are actually more closely related

to whales and porpoises. Whales,

porpoises, and hippos share a

common ancestor and history of

development. They are all mammals.

While hippos are not ocean animals,

they do love water. Unlike its

relatives the whale and porpoise,

however, the hippo has four legs

instead of fins.

One way the hippo is similar to

whales and porpoises is its speed.

Hippos are surprisingly fast and can

run faster than humans.

Use a Venn Diagram like the one shown to compare and contrast hippos with whales and porpoises. Then answer the questions below.

This is a story about a rare hawksbill tirtle whose adress

is Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve in Hawaii. The turtle

was seen with a hook caught in its left flipper. Everyone

assumed the turtle would die so it was a surprize when a

scuba diver spotted it swimming farthur out in the bay.

Divers were able to rescue the hawksbill, altheugh the vet’s

X-ray showed a sengle rusty fishing hook embedded in the

animal. The vet decided to cut away as much of the hook

as possible insteed of removing it. After the hawksbill was

treated with antibiotics, it was released back into Hanauma

Bay with “HB” painted on its shell. Several hundrid

people visit the bay daily. Some will bring a sandwitch and

fruit from a nearby orcherd. They hope to catch a glimpse

of “HB” swimming in the midle of the bay.
