Use vocabulary related to photography. Aims 1. Use a digital camera to record an image. 2. Transfer a digitally-recorded image from the camera to a computer 3. Recognize subject placement as related to the composition 4. Develop techniques for visualising the composition before shooting 5. Maintain photographic journal: settings notes/subject notes Lesson Procedur e (Activit ies) 1. Discussion of the students photographs 2. Discussion: images are stored in the camera memory electronically in a numerical form that computer software can manipulate, pixels, megapixels Activity: demonstration uploading an image from the camera, RAW image, white balance 3. Discussion: Elements of Composition through the work of well known photographers, analyses of image according to visual/structural/technical elements a. Visual Elements: Black and white, Colour, lines, shape, form, pattern, texture b. Technical Elements: lens selection [wide angle, telephoto], Aperture [dop], ISO, Colour/ B&W 4. Discussion: taking photographs with the camera not at eye level, how does this affect the compositional elements? Sample images. 5. Learning Outcomes

To develop an appreciation for photography as an art form Develop skills related to use of Digital Camera Practice good techniques To understand the properties of light and how these affect image production. Use vocabulary related to photography.

Aims

1. Use a digital camera to record an image.2. Transfer a digitally-recorded image from the camera to a computer3. Recognize subject placement as related to the composition4. Develop techniques for visualising the composition before shooting5. Maintain photographic journal: settings notes/subject notes

Lesson Procedure(Activities)

1. Discussion of the students photographs2. Discussion: images are stored in the camera memory electronically in a numerical

form that computer software can manipulate, pixels, megapixelsActivity: demonstration uploading an image from the camera, RAW image, white balance

3. Discussion: Elements of Composition through the work of well known photographers, analyses of image according to visual/structural/technical elements

a. Visual Elements: Black and white, Colour, lines, shape, form, pattern, textureb. Structural Elements: main subject is center of attention, balance [symmetry, tone,

colour, contrast], unity, proportion, linear perspective [detail/object placement], rule of thirds

c. Technical Elements: lens selection [wide angle, telephoto], Aperture [dop], ISO, Colour/ B&W

4. Discussion: taking photographs with the camera not at eye level, how does this affect the compositional elements? Sample images.

5. Discussion: the camera controls that affect exposure [shutter speed, aperture, ISO]; built in meter

Activity: demonstrate bracket exposure, use settings indicated by built in light meter, one stop more and one stop less [compare, discuss]Photo-shoot Assignment #1: discuss, q&aActivity: students to experiment with techniques to produce compositions; consider their subject; consider the place to shoot; prepare for their first photo-shoot assignment in their photo notebook/diary

Homework Photo-shoot Assignment #1, 1 drafts due on 23 sept. Final draft due 25 sept.
