Reading Strategies and Scanning

Walt says: “In this lesson we will learn to:– extract relevant information from a dense text– scan for information using cueing prompts from

questions– scan extended texts for key factual information– understand limitations of scanning– use a range of reading strategies– become aware of physical features of skim

reading– identify key features of layout– identify question words.”

Reading Strategies and Scanning

Wilf says: “By the end of this lesson you should be able to say:

‘I can…– understand a text and make sense of it by

recognising familiar words– explain what scanning is– use question words to help me scan for

information– use scanning to quickly find surface information– use headings etc to find relevant sections of the

text to read for detailed information.’”

Tripcolosis

Tripcolosis is the fear of garagtui. It is found most often in diacosis who live in Hikosimisoes. When a garagtui sees a waftus its fur stands on end and its eyes bulge like a frog. The people of Hikosimisoes are not affected by Tripcolosis because they are human.

Skimming

To get a general idea of the text.

You do not read every word. Look at Chapter Headings and Sub

HeadingsFirst and Last Paragraphs,

Illustrations, Diagrams and the text beneath them etc.

Scanning

To search quickly for particular information – a name, a date or an event

Run your eyes quickly over the page or

Follow your finger down the middle of the text.

Look for key words and clues to help you find what you are looking for.

CloseReading

To read for overall understanding.

Read carefully to get a strong understanding of the material – look at topic sentences to identify main points in a paragraph, think over the points made and language used to help you show good overall understanding in response to questions and in essays.
