Lesson 3 – Skimming and Scanning 1
I’m Wilf. I will tell you “what I’m looking for”
in this unit. This means I want to know if you can do what I am looking for by the
end!
I’m Walt. I will tell you what we will be learning, after all:
we are learning to…work well in Meldrum Academy!
Reading Strategies and Scanning
Walt says: “In this lesson we will learn to:– extract relevant information from a dense text– scan for information using cueing prompts from
questions– scan extended texts for key factual information– understand limitations of scanning– use a range of reading strategies– become aware of physical features of skim
reading– identify key features of layout– identify question words.”
Reading Strategies and Scanning
Wilf says: “By the end of this lesson you should be able to say:
‘I can…– understand a text and make sense of it by
recognising familiar words– explain what scanning is– use question words to help me scan for
information– use scanning to quickly find surface information– use headings etc to find relevant sections of the
text to read for detailed information.’”
Tripcolosis
Tripcolosis is the fear of garagtui. It is found most often in diacosis who live in Hikosimisoes. When a garagtui sees a waftus its fur stands on end and its eyes bulge like a frog. The people of Hikosimisoes are not affected by Tripcolosis because they are human.

Activity 8 – Using Clues in Page Layout
Skimming
To get a general idea of the text.
You do not read every word. Look at Chapter Headings and Sub
HeadingsFirst and Last Paragraphs,
Illustrations, Diagrams and the text beneath them etc.
Scanning
To search quickly for particular information – a name, a date or an event
Run your eyes quickly over the page or
Follow your finger down the middle of the text.
Look for key words and clues to help you find what you are looking for.
CloseReading
To read for overall understanding.
Read carefully to get a strong understanding of the material – look at topic sentences to identify main points in a paragraph, think over the points made and language used to help you show good overall understanding in response to questions and in essays.
