Teaching for Depth Our number system is based on the number 10, so 10 is an important number in mathematics. The ten frame introduced in this lesson helps children keep track when counting 10 or more objects and helps reinforce the idea of grouping 10 and extras, a key to understanding teen numbers. Working with the ten frame also readies children for the addition strategy make a ten taught in succeeding lessons.

The ten frame visually shows two rows of 5. As children place counters from left to right in each row, they are showing one-to-one correspondence. The ten frame shows one group of 10 and 10 single units in the same model.

Essential QuestionHow can you use a ten frame to add 10 and some more?

Making ConnectionsRemind children that they have learned to count on to solve addition problems.

What is the sum if you count on 2 from 10? 12

What is the sum if you count on 3 from 10? 13

Learning ActivityWhat is the problem children are trying to solve? Connect the story to the problem. Ask questions like the following.

How can you use a ten frame and counters to show the trash cans the people on the block put out? I can show 10 counters in the ten frame and 3 counters outside it.

How do you know how many counters there are in the ten frame? The ten frame is full, so there are ten counters in all.

What do the counters outside the ten frame show? They show how many more than ten there are.

Literacy and MathematicsChoose one or more of the following activities.

Have children write a word problem using the counters shown inside and outside the ten frame as the addends.

Have children retell the story in their own words.

How can you use a ten frame to add 10

Listen and DrawMaterials Workmat 7 (ten frame) or Workmat 8 (ten frames) (see eTeacher Resources), two-color counters, red and yellow crayons

Read the following problem aloud to the class. Ali has 10 red apples in a bag. She has 5 yellow apples next to the bag. How many apples does Ali have?

Have children build the problem 10 + 5 using two-color counters and the ten frame on the page. Children may prefer to use the ten frame(s) on Workmat 7 or Workmat 8.• What do you need to fi nd? how many apples

Ali has

• How can the ten frame help you? I can show 10 counters in the frame and 5 counters outside the frame.

• How can the colors of the counters help you? I can use a different color for each addend.

After children have modeled the problem with counters, have them draw and color the counters on the page. Encourage volunteers to show their models and explain their work.• How many apples does Ali have? 15 apples • How did using the ten frame and counters

help you fi nd the sum? Possible answers: It was easy to see the addends. I could add to 10.

MathTalk

MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Use Math Talk to focus on children’s understanding of how the ten frame shows adding on to 10.What parts of the number sentence does your model show? Possible answer: It shows the two addends, the 10 and the 5.

ELL Strategy: Model Language

Model language for adding 10 and an addend less than 10. Show the problem: 10 + 1 = _____. Demonstrate how to count on from 10 to fi nd the sum using the ten frame and two-color counters. Show children the following problems: 10 + 2 = _____ 10 + 3 = _____ 10 + 4 = _____ 10 + 5 = _____Guide children to solve the problems using the ten frame and two-color counters.

HandsOn

1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fl uency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 − 4 = 13 − 3 − 1 = 10 − 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 − 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Model and DrawMP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Work through the model with children as they color the counters and record the sum.

• How do red and yellow counters help you solve the problem? Possible answers: It is easier to see each addend. Red counters fill the ten frame. The yellow counters show the number added to 10.

• Why is it easier to add with a ten frame? Possible answer: The ten frame is full so I know that the sum is a teen number. I can start at 10 and count from there.

Suggest that children predict the missing addend and then solve the problem to check their prediction. If needed, allow children to use a ten frame (see eTeacher Resources) and two-color counters to solve the problem. Early finishers can create similar problems and exchange them with a partner to solve.

DEEPER

To extend their thinking, have children write and solve similar problems to Exercise 16. Have children first find the sum of 10 + 1 and continue for sums 12–19. MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • How did you solve Exercise 16? Possible answer:

Practice and HomeworkUse the Practice and Homework pages to provide children with more practice of the concepts and skills presented in this lesson. Children master their understanding as they complete practice items and then challenge their critical thinking skills with Problem Solving. Use the Write Math section to determine children’s understanding of content for this lesson. Encourage children to use their Math Journals to record their answers.

CCSS.Math.Practice.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Through multiple experiences adding a one-digit number to 10, children will understand and notice that “10” is in each teen number.

The number 15 can be shown with counters on a ten frame and with Secret Code Cards. Connecting the two representations allows children to see that both ways show the addition 10 1 5. Continuing to make the numbers 11–19 the same way will help children notice how each teen number shows the addition of 10 and another addend.
