Chapter 2 Ratio, Rate and Proportional Reasoning
Lesson 4: Unit Rate
Ratio – compares 2 numbers
Can be written 3 different ways
Always simplified & labeled
Rate – how much it is for ONE item
Divide (money goes on top)
Always labeled
Round all answers to the nearest cent (hundredths place)
Find “better buy” by looking at LOWEST unit rate
We write rate to compare different items, such as cost and weight.
You should always include the unit of measure.
Example:
Twelve notebooks cost $16.00 Find the unit rate.
Rate: A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. Always divide the denominator into the numerator, remember to include the units of measurement.
Therefore the denominator will be 1 unit for that measurement.
Find the unit rate:
$550 for 20 hours of work 215 miles on 11 gallons of gas $5.25 for 3.2 lbs
Example:
A printing press prints 120 sheets in 3 minutes. Express the printing as a unit rate.
