JOHN 11

Life of Christ

Page 2: LESSON 6 LUKE 16:19-17:10 JOHN 11 Life of Christ

The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

Who is the audience? (v. 14)What is the situation? (v. 14-15)

Is this a parable or a real story? This is done to allow people to avoid the points made Does it matter?

Rich man (clothed in purple, fine linen and fared sumptuously)

Lazarus – a beggar (full of sores, laid at the gate, desired the crumbs from the rich man’s table)

Page 3: LESSON 6 LUKE 16:19-17:10 JOHN 11 Life of Christ

The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

They die Beggar -> Abraham’s bosom Rich man -> Buried and in Torment

Now the rich man desires mercy being tormented in flames In life the rich man received his good things and

Lazarus his evil things In death Lazarus is comforted and the rich man

tormented.

There is a “great gulf fixed”Send Lazarus back to my five brothers

They have Moses and the Prophets let them hear them

The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

Lessons Rich mans could have used his “GREAT” possessions

to show mercy (Luke 12:34) Lazarus appeared to have nothing on earth but what

is implied of his relationship with God? Lazarus had true riches The rich man found that earthly riches ended at the

grave The rich man found out what was truly important after

the grave We can teach the finality of the grave and our eternal

fate

Sobering Facts About Discipleship (Luke 17:1-10)

It is impossible that no offenses will come (Gal. 2:11) Woe to him that causes one to stumble It would be better for a millstone to be put around their

neck and cast into the sea.If your brother sins “against you”

Rebuke him If he repents, forgive him (as many times as he repents)

Our attitude Jesus (Luke 13:34-35) Gal. 6:1-2 Gal. 5:15

Sobering Facts About Discipleship (Luke 17:1-10)

Apostles response: “Increase our faith” Did they feel the weight of the previous statements?

Faith of a mustard seed Note the “Who” of this passage is the apostles Power of this faith Responsibility of this faith (vs. 7-10)

Again, do you think they were confused by Jesus’ response to their question?

Jesus Raises Lazarus (John 11)

Jesus loved Mary, Martha and LazarusLazarus becomes sick and they send word to JesusThis sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of

God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby. Jesus knows he is dead but doesn’t reveal it to the others yet He stays two more days to ensure the power of the miracle

Jesus says, “Let us go to Judea” Disciples say, “They want to kill you there and you’re going

there again?” Thomas says, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” (v.

16)

Page 8: LESSON 6 LUKE 16:19-17:10 JOHN 11 Life of Christ

Jesus Raises Lazarus (John 11)

To this danger Jesus responds: There are 12 hours in a day (lights) in which the

traveler will walk. Can they kill Him before His time is fulfilled? The disciples don’t get this.

Lazarus is asleep Disciples think all is fine then, if he sleeps he will get

better. Jesus plainly says, “Lazarus is dead”

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. (v. 15)

Jesus Raises Lazarus (John 11)

Lazarus has been dead and in the tomb four daysMany Jews with Mary and Martha (comforting)Martha meets Jesus and says, “If you had been

here, my brother would not have died.” But I know what ever You ask God he will give You.

Your brother will rise again Martha: “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at

the last day.” Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes

in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Martha: Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who comes into the world.

Page 10: LESSON 6 LUKE 16:19-17:10 JOHN 11 Life of Christ

Jesus Raises Lazarus (John 11)

Martha still doesn’t know what Jesus is about to do. She goes to find Mary

Mary rises quickly to go out to meet Jesus Jews believe she is going to mourn so they follow.

She falls at Jesus’ feet weeping Jesus groaned in the Spirit Jesus wept

Jews, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?” No one can even conceive that Jesus can raise the dead.

Jesus Raises Lazarus (John 11)

Take away the stone!Martha: Lord, by this time he will stink!Jesus: Did I not say to you that if you would

believe you would see the glory of God?Jesus makes the point clear that they know

he is the Christ (vs. 41-42) That you (Jews) may believe that You (God) sent Me

(Jesus)

Lazarus come forth!

Christ the Watershed (John 11:45-53)

Many of the Jews who followed Mary to the tomb believed.

Some went away to tell the Pharisees what Jesus did

They called a council to ask, “What shall we do with him?” If we let him alone, the Romans will come and will take

away our place and nation. Caiaphas prophesied, “It is expedient for us that one

man should die for the people and not that the entire nation should perish”. He knew not what he was prophesying.

From this time on, they plotted to kill Jesus
