Community Time: Lesson Tape poster up for the children to see. LL (Lesson Leader): Last week we learned that Jesus is God’s son. Today’s Bible story tells us that we can get to know Jesus. Hold up the bell Let’s call this bell a “friendship bell”. When we hear it ring, it will remind us that we can get to know Jesus. Today you are going to hear about the first men who got to be friends with Jesus. At times during the story, I will ring the bell. When I do, that is your cue to say, “Get to know Jesus.” Practice ringing the bell and having the children repeat the phrase a few times. For many years people had been waiting for Jesus, God’s Son, the Messiah, to come. God had told many men like Solomon and John the Baptist to tell everyone that God would send Jesus. Now that Jesus was born and grown up, Jesus was going to start the work God had sent him to do. Many people were excited to see who Jesus was. One day, after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, John showed his friends who Jesus was. Two of his friends said goodbye to John the Baptist and left to follow Jesus. They wanted to…ring bell to cue children’s response, “get to know Jesus.” Yes! They wanted to get to know Jesus and become his friends. The two men asked Jesus where he was staying, and Jesus invited them to his house. The men spent all day with Jesus because they wanted to… ring bell to cue children’s response, “get to know Jesus.” One of the men, Andrew, was so excited to meet Jesus that he ran to tell his brother, Simon. Simon had been waiting for many years for Jesus to come. He wanted to… ring bell to cue children’s response, “get to know Jesus.” So both brothers ran back to where Jesus was staying and spent the day getting to know him and becoming his friends. Jesus loved to meet people and get to know them. When Jesus met Simon, Jesus liked him so much that he gave Simon a new name: Peter- Simon Peter. Jesus got to know Andrew and Peter. Andrew and Peter were Jesus’ first friends and disciples because they wanted to… ring bell to cue children’s response, “get to know Jesus.” Who were the people in our story? Peter, Andrew and Jesus Who did Jesus call to follow him? Peter and Andrew Who did Peter and Andrew Follow? Jesus

We can get to know Jesus too. When we come to church and listen to Bible stories, we get to know Jesus. When we listen to our parents, relatives, or friends tell us about the Bible and the things Jesus said, we get to know Jesus better. Jesus wants to be our friend.

Circle Time

10-15 min

Circle Time: Key Verse Activity Have the children form a circle and sit down. Open your Bible to John 1:12. LL: Our Key Verse from the Bible says, “To all who receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” This means that everyone who believes in Jesus gets to be in God’s family! Isn’t that exciting! Let’s say the verse together. Lead the children in repeating the verse. Explain to the children that when we get to know Jesus and believe in him, we become part of his family. Sing “I Believe” to the tune of “Three Blind Mice”. Encourage kids to join you in the hand motions (track 18 on Curriculum CD). I believe. (Put one hand on your heart.) I believe. ( Put your other hand on your heart.) That Jesus is God (point up with one index finger) That Jesus is God. (Point up with both index fingers)

Bible: Bookmarked to John 1:12 * Curriculum CD- Track 18

Since I believe that Jesus is (put one hand on your heat) The Son of God, then I will be (put your other hand on your heart) A child of God most happily (hug yourself) A child of God. (Hug yourself) (repeat 2x) Tell me something you know about someone in your family. (Answers will vary) What do you know about God? (He is God’s son, he loves us, he helps us, he wants to be our friend) When we get to know Jesus and believe in him, we become God’s children and that makes us a part of God’s family.

Centers

20 Minutes

Center 1: Bells Give each child a paper cup to color. String two bells per child on a single pipe cleaner. Fold pipe cleaner in half. Poke a hole in the bottom of the paper chip and pull both pipe cleaner ends through the hole. Twist the pipe cleaner tightly so it doesn’t slip through the hole. The bells should be on the inside of the cup. Hold the pipe cleaners and ring the bell! Write “Get to Know Jesus” and the child’s name on each cup. Encourage them to say, “Get to know Jesus!” as they shake their jingle bells. Center 2: Blocks Have blocks set out on floor. Encourage children to make a “friendship tower”. To do this, the children will take turns coming up to you to add a block to the tower. As they add a block, they will say a friend’s name in class. You may need to help with names and encourage them to say names that have not yet been said. Once the tower is finished say, “Wow! This is a very tall friendship tower. God says that Jesus is our friend too! Let’s add one more block at the top for Jesus, our friend.” Add the last block for Jesus. Center 3: Friendship Mural Unroll a large sheet of butcher paper on the floor. Place crayons all around. On the paper, write “Get to know Jesus” in large letters. Encourage children to draw pictures of friendship to cover the paper. When finished, let each child tell about what they drew. Remind the children that Jesus is our friend.
