Introduction

Walch Education’s 85 Lesson Launchers series is a wonderful way to turn extra classroom minutes into valuable learning time. Use the 85 quick activities at the beginning of class to focus students on instruction; near the end of class to make good use of transitional time; in the middle of class to shift gears between lessons–or whenever you have minutes that now go unused. 85 Lesson Launchers are a natural lead-in to more in-depth activities.

Memorial DayAlways capitalize the first word of a sentence. Capitalize days of the week, months of the year, and holidays.

Capitalize the proper words in the sentences below. Write two sentences to complete the story.

Holiday Parade

we had a parade yesterday in front of the capitol building. it was a cloudy monday

afternoon in may, but we didn’t cancel the parade. every monday they sell vegetables

and crafts near the capitol building. there were many people there for the fair and even

more people for the parade.

we were celebrating memorial day. memorial day is a special holiday. parades are

popular for memorial day, but not for such holidays as easter and christmas. memorial

day is always observed on a monday. sometimes the official day is on a saturday, tuesday,

or thursday. i like that i don’t have to go to school on a monday. it is a nice break before

the last day of school in june.

there were lots of floats and some people walking around on stilts. there were also

clowns making balloons and people throwing candy at the crowd. the weather was hot

like a warm summer day in july.

the next parade will be for the fourth of july, and i want to be a part of that one.

it will be the saturday after my birthday and i can’t wait!

The Three C RuleUse commas after coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences. A compound sentence is made up of a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or, nor, so, and yet) and two clauses that can stand alone as sentences.

Example: We broke the dishes, and then we glued them together.

Place a comma in each compound sentence below.

Subjects Versus PredicatesA subject is the word in the sentence that does something or is talked about.A predicate (verb) is the part of a sentence that tells what the subject is doing.

A declarative sentence makes a statement.

An interrogative sentence asks a question.

An imperative sentence gives a command.

Tie Them TogetherA simple sentence states only one complete thought. A compound sentence is made up of two or more simple sentences joined by either a comma and a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon.

Examples: The eggs and turkey look fresh and delicious. (simple sentence) I am bringing a sweater, and I think you should, too. (compound sentence)

Shade the PartsA prepositional phrase includes a preposition and an object of the preposition. A prepositional phrase may also contain words that modify the object.

Example: We slid the paper underneath the teacher’s door. (Underneath is the preposition, door is the object of the preposition, and the and teacher’s modify door.)

Fragment RepairA sentence fragment is not a complete sentence. It is missing important information, such as the subject or the verb (predicate) or both.

Examples: Leaves the room (The subject is missing.) Justin leaves the room when he’s angry. (complete sentence) Not the best idea. (The subject and the verb are missing.) Cindy’s suggestion is not the best idea. (complete sentence)
