Lesson Title: Voyage of the Atlantic salmon
Class KS2 Topic Migration
Time Allocation 30 minutes
Learning Intentions Pupils should identify the route a salmon
takes during its lifecycle and discuss the reasons why they migrate.
Work in pairs to identify and label the countries Atlantic Salmon are born in, the rivers they travel through and the area of the Atlantic Ocean they arrive at.
Success Criteria
Pupils should identify the countries Atlantic salmon originate from by looking at the map in the Prezi provided. As a whole group OR in pairs they can identify on the globe the countries the fish are born in and the area of the Atlantic Ocean they travel to.
In pairs pupils should label the appropriate countries and the direction of migration on an A3 map of world.
Key Vocabulary County Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, River Bush, Europe, North America, Atlantic Ocean, Greenland, Norwegian Sea, river, ocean, migration, imprint, and any other countries the children identify.
Introduction
Pupils should discuss what they have learned so far about the Atlantic salmon. As a whole group they can move through the Prezi. Focus should be placed on the basic map provided. Pupils should identify what they know about that area of earth; the continent, the ocean, some of the surrounding countries.
Pupils should identify what direction the salmon migrate using the compass.

Development (Activity)
Tutorial: in front of the IWB instruct pupils how to identify the River Bush, Northern Ireland using Google Earth. Pupils can also use the directions function to show a route between the River Bush and a country beside the area of the Atlantic Ocean where they arrive (this should discussed). They may choose Greenland, North America etc as a destination.
Pupils should work in pairs to find the River Bush on Google Earth and follow the instructions on their worksheet.

Do you think it is better they hatch in a river?
Why do you think they migrate?
What direction do they migrate in?
How do you think the environment would be different between the River Bush and the Atlantic Ocean?
Plenary
In groups ask the pupils to discuss what they felt and what they observed as a migrating salmon. They should evaluate how well they found their way home each time and discuss these with the rest of the class.
Differentiation
Mixed ability pairings.
Ensure there is pupil involvement during the tutorial.
Extension
Pupils can label the other regions on their map.
Not all Atlantic salmon travel in the same direction, pupils can investigate the other regions they travel to and from.
