THE PROJECT

En sortant de l’école is a collection of 13 animated short films of 3 minutes that poetically

portrayed in the highest artistic freedom 13 poems by Prevert in the graphic universes of

young directors from French animation schools.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

« Co-produced by Tant Mieux Prod, Bayard Jeunesse Animation and France Télévisions

- for a broadcast in March 2014 on the Ludo show on France 3 for the occasion of the

Printemps des poètes - this collection pays tribute to the free and exploratory spirit of

Prévert entrusting 15 young directors, 15 talents. They each chose a poem by Prévert

and will illustrate it, interpret it. With their desires, their images, their messages, their

rhythm, their techniques and their traits to share the seemingly simple art of Prévert.

The diversity of techniques is one of the keystones of this collection: stop motion,

traditional animation, bench-title, paper cut, 2D digital, 3D ... Prévert, aware of the

difficulty of youth, spent a lot of time giving a helping hand to his talented young friends.

En sortant de l’école is inspired by his unique personality. The idea is simple: give them

a blank card to make a business card! »

JACQUES PRÉVERT

Jacques Prévert was born in 1900 in Neuilly-sur-Seine during the Belle Epoque. We

discover then the first cartoons, a cinema which is still silent, and it is also the time of the

first airmen, the development of the automobile, etc.

Jacques was a good student, but he often got bored at school and discovered reading

thanks to The Three Musketeers, The Thousand and One Nights and many other works.

He also discovered cinema with his family and was passionate about the first Westerns,

films by Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and the Fantômas series by Louis Feuillade. At

the age of 14, Jacques Prévert left school because of the First World War. After going

small one small job to the next, he became an extra in films at age 23 and stayed at his

friend Marcel Duhamel's in rue du Château in Paris, where his surrealist friends also

spent a great amount of their time. He had not yet begun to write but enjoyed telling

stories and recounting comical stories. He invented a game called the exquisite corpse.

In 1932, he wrote plays that reacted to the news and were played at the entrances of

factories with an acting troupe named the October Group. In 1936, at the time of the first

paid holiday, he became a screenwriter and wrote many films that became very famous

such as Les Enfants du paradis by Marcel Carné, or even Le Roi et l’Oiseau by Paul

Grimault.

At 30, he published poems from time to time in magazines and composed songs. He was

also a professor of philosophy in Reims where he had the idea to gather his texts for the

first time and gave them to his students. They were then published in the form of a

collection, the first is called Paroles. Thanks to this book, many people start reading

poetry because Jacques Prévert uses everyday words to talk about love, childhood, and

animals. He also criticizes war, injustices and prejudices. At 46, he became very famous

Page 6: LESSON PLAN - French Culture...Lesson plan by Azadée Tolooie 6 EN SORTANT DE L’ÉCOLE based on the poems by Jacques Prévert and he wrote much less for cinema and wrote other books

and he wrote much less for cinema and wrote other books with friends, photographers or

painters like Picasso, Miro, Calder. He wrote some children's books for his daughter and

began to practice making collages. He cut out images from newspapers, beautiful books

and collected chromolithographies, which he kept in his drawers. When the time came,

he created unusual collages over photographs, magazine images, books, and envelopes.

His last apartment is in Veron, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, behind the Moulin

Rouge. He often chatted with his next-door neighbor and friend Boris Vian. Many people

would visit him, and he helped young artists by writing texts for their exhibitions. This

apartment still exists, it houses Fatras, a society created by his granddaughter Eugénie

dedicated to promoting his work. Jacques Prévert died at 77. He is buried next to his

wife and daughter in Omonville-la-Petite, where he had a house that is now a museum.1

THE SHORT FILMS AND THEIR FILM MAKERS

EN SORTANT DE l’ÉCOLE

Lila Peuscet

Summary: A rather surreal world tour with

adventures, landscapes and imaginary encounters

of children getting out of school.

A word from the filmmaker:

« This poem made me travel and put into words

what I imagined as a child and that many adults

did not understand: waiting for Spring, talking to

abstract things, seeing things fly that cannot fly ...

In staging this text, I replayed my childhood by

telling myself that at least Prévert understood. »

LE GARDIEN DE PHARE AIME TROP LES OISEAUX

Clément Ruyter

Summary: This poem evokes the misfortune of a

man who loves birds too much. Whether his

lighthouse is on or off, he cannot prevent

thousands of birds from falling and bumping.

A word from the filmmaker:

« I am interested primarily in the work of color

and animation. Since my installation in Paris, I

work for Xilam Animation’s (Oggy and

cockroaches, Hubert and Takako ...) decor and the

development of the animated series. »

PRESQUE

Mélia Gilson

Summary: A girl becomes a woman and

confronts the reality of happiness and misfortune.

A word from the filmmaker:

« We are not taught to be happy or free. We are

taught above all to integrate, to bend to constraints

that are not in our nature. With this poem, I would

like to show that freedom is there, in simple and

fragile moments that must be seized. It's possible,

throughout our lives. »

LES BELLES FAMILLES

Armelle Renac

Summary: We are witnessing a burlesque parade

of all the kings of France named Louis.

Louis I, Louis II, Louis III ... Louis XVIII and no

one, nothing. What are these people who are not

so damned to count to twenty?

A word from the filmmaker:

« It is a parade of Louis and it is the reign of

appearances. These people think they are beautiful

and important, and they do not stay on stage ...

What I liked was the cynical side at the end of the

poem. I wanted to replace the cynicism of the fall

with humor. I'm a little nicer than Prévert at the

end. In studying the history of all these Louis, I

discovered that most of them did not really want to

be in the limelight, it's sad! »

LE CANCRE

Chenghua Yang

Summary: This poem plunges us into the spirit of a dunce.

He says no with his head, but he says yes with the heart.

He says yes to what he likes, and he says no to the teacher.

A word from the filmmaker:

« For two years, I found myself with a teacher who spoke

to me badly because instead of learning what he wanted to

teach me, I preferred to draw, dance and sing. Even the

other children were shying away from me. In this poem, I

like this child who wants to do something else and he

holds up. He dares to oppose the teacher. We must insist

and not give up doing what we like to do! "

LES OISEAUX DU SOUCI

Marie Larrivé and Camille Authouart

Summary: This is the story of someone trying to mourn

his beloved.

A word from the filmmaker:

« We quickly agreed on the choice of this poem which

particularly touched us by its melancholic character. »

QUARTIER LIBRE

Marine Blin

Summary: Jean-Armand defies the authority of his

commander by putting his kepi in the cage and leaving

with the bird on his head.

A word from the filmmaker:

« I chose this poem because in a few words and a poetic

image he tells us about a man who, by means of his words,

gains his freedom. I wanted to imagine his story, which

led him to meet this bird.

That's what I find exciting in the adaptation work. How to

find his look by feeding on the words of Prévert, with

respect, without distorting them. And transmit the images

that come to us by reading his words. »

ÂNE DORMANT

Caroline Lefevre

Summary: A little boy wearing a dunce's hat identifies

with the animal that magically comes to give him a hand

to fulfill his homework.

A word from the filmmaker:

« I got very bored at school and would have liked to be

allowed to dream, to be told that it is not so bad to have a

bad grade. I wish we could leave space for children at

school to dream. It's not as bad to dream in school, it can

even flourish! »

L’ÉCOLE DES BEAUX-ARTS

Anne Huynh

Summary: A father shows, transmits to his children the

magic of wonder and imagination, a memory that will

remain engraved in their memory forever.

A word from the filmmaker:

« As I went from childhood to adulthood, I was frustrated

to no longer see things the same way. This poem has

plunged me back into a childhood pleasure where we

marvel at everything. This poem speaks of the

transmission of wonder and creativity. He says we can

create worlds from nothing. It's like a tale that I want to

put in an image by anchoring it in reality. It is important

once an adult to keep the freshness of this vision! ».

TANT DE FORÊTS

Burcu Sankur and Geoffrey Godet

Summary: Jacques Prévert castigates the destruction of

forests to make paper pulp, paper that serves to alert

people about the dangers of deforestation ...

A word from the filmmaker:

« We want to create a forest so beautiful that we want to

be there, that amazes us, that we can feel attach to while

it is being destroyed. In this poem, there is a message

that shows the consequences of the human presence on

earth. We want to stage it as a metaphor for a somewhat

ironic cycle but its human presence. »

PAGE D’ÉCRITURE

Marion Lacourt

Summary: A rather distracted student is visited by the

lyre bird. They will wreak havoc in the classroom!

A word from the filmmaker:

« This poem evokes for me the carnivalesque revolution

by color, feathers and fanfare. »

JE SUIS COMME JE SUIS

Marion Auvin

Summary: A woman tells us about her, of seduction, of

accepting oneself as one is. She embodies the beauty of

all women.

A word from the filmmaker:

« I want to talk about this lesson of life: the fact of

taking care of oneself, of being pleased with oneself. I

also want to show all these women I am surrounded by

and that I am admiring.

Page 13: LESSON PLAN - French Culture...Lesson plan by Azadée Tolooie 6 EN SORTANT DE L’ÉCOLE based on the poems by Jacques Prévert and he wrote much less for cinema and wrote other books

I find them beautiful not by their canon of beauty but

because they have charm, by many small things, by their

faults too! I want to create the movement of a woman

written by Prévert, invent his gestures. For the love of

movement, the rhythmic side, the dances in a woman's

life. »

LE DROMADAIRE MÉCONTENT

Morgane Le Péchon

Summary: A young camel is attending his very first

conference. He will go from jubilation to deepest

disappointment.

A word from the filmmaker:

« What interests me in this text is the humor that is not

mean, with which Prévert mocks people who take

themselves too seriously. His point of annoyance ... My

work is rather surreal, and I try to do that with my

collages. Humor by the image to restore the incongruous

emotions that come from reading Prévert. »

TEACHER WORKSHEET 1: THE TITLE OF THE PROJECT

Level A1.1/ A1

EN SORTANT DE L’ÉCOLE

Students will discover through this first activity the title of the project of the 13 short films

based on the poems by Jacques Prévert En sortant de l’école. It will be an opportunity to

enter Prévert and children's worlds as they are poems about school, dreams, family and

everything that belongs to the world of children.

Students must color the bubbles of the activities they like to do when they get out of

school. Getting out of school is an important moment, a moment of transition between the

school world and the home world, a moment of liberation when another phase of the day

begins: returning home, games, family, afternoon snack (part of the French culture) etc.

They will be able to discover the vocabulary of daily activities and hobbies.

After coloring the bubbles and sharing the answers of all the students, the teacher can

propose a guessing game based on mimicking the activities done after school.

The second activity aims to give free rein to the students’ creativities and to prepare

them for the viewing of the trailer but also for the very first short film in the series.

En sortant de l’école where Jacques Prévert invites the reader to a wonderful journey in

a train after getting out of school.

TEACHER WORKSHEET 2: DISCOVER THE VOCABULARY OF

THE SHORT FILMS

Levels A1.1/ A1

These activities aim to prepare students for the vocabulary present throughout the 13 short films. This way, the students will have already familiarized themselves with the cards and will be able to recall them during the viewing of the films.

They will have to categorize each proposed element after having previously cut the labels that must be placed in their corresponding columns.

Answers:

After playing with and discovering the vocabulary words of the poems, the students will

be able to have fun by playing the game of Memory de Prévert. Once the cards are cut,

the teacher will put the cards face down on a table so that each student returns two

cards. Each turn, the students will try to return a pair of identical images. If necessary,

they are able to play again. The game ends when the cards have all been matched.

When the students that are playing in pairs earn a pair of cards, the teacher can invite them to repeat the word of the image and reinvest the vocabulary of the categorization activity.

Watch the trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0q-76n2jyk

Students now master the keywords of the 13 short films. The teacher can then preview

the trailer without the sound. In the first preview, the teacher can ask them to say

"STOP!” when they see one of the memory elements of the previous activity on the

screen and then name it. Then they will watch the trailer again with the sound.

This activity aims to make the students aware of certain forms of art, such as art that is

made of objects different means for artistic creations as found in the opening credits of

short films En sortant de l’école.

The students will have to identify the objects of each proposed category (house, toys,

and school) by coloring the areas of the images of the credits of the indicated color. Each

category is based on the accessible items to the students, namely home, school and

toys.

Answers:

TEACHER WORKSHEET 4: THE EMOTIONS OF THE CHARACTERS

Levels A1.1/ A1

LES ÉMOTIONS DE NICOLAS

Throughout the viewing of the short films, the students could feel different emotions

through the characters. Indeed, the feeling of the child is constantly solicited through

these videos that show us children, adults, animals, and creatures who express their joy,

their sadness, their fear, their anger: our four primary emotions. The poems by Jacques

Prévert and the representation through these short films therefore appeal to the

emotional sensitivity of the spectators who can identify with the characters.

This will be an opportunity to enter the world of feelings and emotions in French as a

Foreign Language and teach basic sentences such as: je suis content, je suis fâché, je

m’ennuie, j’ai peur.

The teacher or students can cut the images of the donkey and paste them next to

Nicolas’ emotions.

In a second step, the teacher will invite the students to draw their emotion (in the circle of Nicolas’ face) that they feel most often at school and to share their feelings during the group discussion.

APPENDIX – THE POEMS OF THE FILM (FRENCH)

List of poems

Alors

on ne salue plus

a demandé le commandant

Non

on ne salue plus

a répondu l'oiseau

Ah bon

a dit l'oiseau.

13. Presque

A Fontainebleau

Presque.
