Healthy and Happy Critters

Students will be able to design a code from their Coding Critters™ to complete.

Students will be able to identify the activities they would like their Coding Critters™ to complete in their habitats.

Needs- Basic things a person, animal, or plant must have to live an acceptable life. Habitat- The natural home of an animal or plant.

Zoo Keeper- Takes care of animals diet, shelter, water, and overall health.

- Coding Critters™ for students - Coding Critters™ habitat pieces- Coding Critters™ storybook

Have Coding Critters™ ready for students.

What activity are you coding to have your critter complete to be happy and healthy?

While the teacher is walking around, check in on students as they code activities for their critter to complete. Are students able to code a certain amount of activities for their critter to complete?

Introduce the activity by asking students what they need to have or do throughout their day to be healthy and happy.

Write their answers on the whiteboard.

Teacher: “What answers match what an animal needs to be healthy and happy?”

Discuss and then ask the following question.

Teacher: “What else does an animal need to be healthy and happy?”

Show video on Zookeeping and how they take care of animals.

Example videos:

I Want to Become A Zookeeper – Kids Dream Jobs – Can you Imagine That? created by Radical Jr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK58EByWxhk

Day in the Life of a Zookeeper created by Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX6ZQwPEk5o

Each Coding Critter has their own “habitat” pieces. Read the Coding Critters™ storybook to help with the discussion. Discuss together what each critter has.

Example: Ranger & Zip have a doghouse, slide, and a device to play catch.

Share how students will be taking care of their critter by coding their movements in their habitat.

Have one student set the cards down on the table and create a sequence that will have the critter move among the habitat.

Once complete, the other student will then code this sequence for their critter to complete.

Students can continue to challenge one another by creating new sequences.
