Secondary Lesson Plan Template Name of class: English 11 Grade Length of class: 120 minutes LEARNING GOALS to be addressed in this lesson (What standards or umbrella learning goals will I address?): CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.7 Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text. (Include at least one play by Shakespeare and one play by an American dramatist.) In this lesson students will have already read the play “A Raisin in the Sun”. The day’s lesson will focus on their viewing of the actors/directors interpretation of the play. The goal is to learn different ways to analyze different forms of story telling. Film adaptations are an easily accessible medium to examine different aspects of text interpretation. However, just like students need to be taught tools to analyze literature materials, they also need to learn different tools to analyze mediums like plays or film. The goal of this lesson is to teach older students these tools. LEARNING OBJECTIVES (in ABCD format using verbs from Bloom’s Taxonomy): REMEMBER, UNDERSTAND, APPLY, ANALYZE, EVALUATE, CREATE Students will recognize the key elements of mise en scene in film by listing different examples of techniques on their graphic organizers. Students will analyze elements of mise en scene in the set of “A Raisin in the Sun” by identifying three scenic items and putting them in their graphic organizer. Students will write a brief paper defending the scenic items they chose from their graphic organizer by writing a paragraph for each element they chose. RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED (What materials and resources will I use?): Each student will have a copy of “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry DVD copy of “A Raisin in the Sun” (1961) “A Raisin in the Sun” Graphic organizer ASSESSMENT (How will I know if students achieve the learning goals/objectives?): WRITTEN RESPONSE? PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT? PERSONAL COMMUNICATION? TEST/QUIZ? The assessment will be the final summarizing paper.

Length  of  class:  120  minutes

LEARNING  GOALS  to  be  addressed  in  this  lesson  (What  standards  or  umbrella  learning  goals  will  I  address?):    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.7 Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text. LEARNING  OBJECTIVES  (in  ABCD  format  using  verbs  from  Bloom’s  Taxonomy):

REMEMBER,  UNDERSTAND,  APPLY,  ANALYZE,  EVALUATE,  CREATE  Students  will  recognize  the  key  elements  of  mise  en  scene  in  film  by  listing  different  examples  of  techniques  on  their  graphic  organizers. RESOURCES/MATERIALS  NEEDED  (What  materials  and  resources  will  I  use?):      Each  student  will  have  a  copy  of  “A  Raisin  in  the  Sun”  by  Lorraine  Hansberry  DVD  copy  of  “A  Raisin  in  the  Sun”  (1961)    “A  Raisin  in  the  Sun”  Graphic  organizer      ASSESSMENT  (How  will  I  know  if  students  achieve  the  learning  goals/objectives?):

WRITTEN  RESPONSE?  PERFORMANCE  ASSESSMENT?  PERSONAL  COMMUNICATION?  TEST/QUIZ?            The  assessment  will  be  the  final  summarizing  paper.

LEARNING  PLAN  (How  will  you  organize  student  learning?    What  instructional  strategies  will  you  use?    How  will  you  scaffold  for  student  learning?):

1.  The  class  will  begin  with  a  brief  PowerPoint  slide  listing  the  seven  key  items  of  mise  en  scene.  Every  student  will  list  these  seven  items  on  their  graphic  organizer.

2. The  organizer  starts  with  a  “prewatch”  activity  where  the  teacher  will  show  the  first  five  minutes  of  the  movie.  The  teacher  will  show  the  first  scene  once  through  without  stopping.  This  way,  students  can  see  the  scene  collectively  together.  (Students  will  already  be  familiar  with  the  plot  of  the  play  because  they  have  previously  read  the  play.)

 3. Then  the  teacher  will  replay  the  same  scene  pausing  to  highlight  key  examples  of

mise  en  scene:  actors,  lighting,  composition,  setting,  costumes,  props,  and  sound  (not  dialogue).  This  will  model  for  the  students  how  to  recognize  elements  of  mise  en  scene  within  the  film  they  are  about  to  watch.

4. The  teacher  then  will  play  the  next  scene  and  instruct  the  students  to  take  notes  of  examples  they  saw  in  the  scene.

   5. Students  will  then  turn  to  a  partner  and  share  what  they  wrote  down  in  a  version

of  TIPS.  Students  will  then  share  what  they  wrote  down  with  the  entire  class. 6.  The  teacher  will  then  play  the  rest  of  the  movie  pausing  approximately  every  20

minutes  to  have  the  students  TIPS  again  to  make  sure  that  they  are  interpreting  the  story  (quasi-‐lecture).

7.  After  the  movie  students  will  highlight  three  of  their  favorite  examples  of  mise  en  scene  to  write  a  brief  paper  on.  The  paper  is  only  three  paragraphs.  One  paragraph  for  every  scenic  element  chosen.
