1. To begin, the children will be asked to sit on the carpet for theSmart Board portion of this lesson which will allow them to engage
in the discussion.
2.
I will then begin by asking the students what types of graphs havethey are used such as a pictograph. This will allow for their
cognitive thinking skills since they will have to think back to what
they have already learned. I will then begin explaining to the
students what data and a bar graph are and how to create a bar graph
using the data. After a brief explanation, I will reinforce these
concepts by showcasing examples using the Smart Board.
3. Altogether there are 3 slides, the first slide defines what data and abar graph are and then shows an example of each. These examples
show how the data and bar graph correlate with each other.
4. For the second slide, the data will already be present and I will askthe students to complete the bar graph using the existing data.
5.
For the third and final slide, the students and I will create our owndata by surveying what type of ice cream they prefer. Once our data
is recorded, the students will then complete the bar graph.
6. Afterwards, the students will go back to their seats to complete aworksheet that further focuses on using data to create a bar graph. I
will do this worksheet alongside of them using the Smart Board.
This will be the formative assessment to ensure the students are able
to correctly use data to create a bar graph.

After the students have completed their worksheet, I will conduct a
brief discussion about what data and a bar graph are in order to get an
understanding of whether the students grasped the concept or not. Iwill ask questions such as what data is and what does the horizontal
and vertical axis measure.
