Math Fingerprint patterns - Use

washable ink pads to

create fingerprint patterns.

How Many Do I Have? -

Roll the body parts cube.

Count how many of each

body part you have. Do

this activity with pets or

stuffed animals too.

How Tall Am I? - Cut a

piece of yarn to measure

child's height. Use this yarn

to compare with different

objects in your home. Find

some that are shorter and

longer than the child's

height. Extend the activity

by measuring other family

members and making a

large graph on the floor to

show the family members

in order from shortest to

tallest. (TF)

Footprint comparisons -

Make footprints of your

family members by stamp-

ing in paint or tracing on

construction paper. Cut

out the footprints. Put

them in order by length.

Family graphing - Graph

how many brothers and

sisters each family

member has.

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Label body parts - Trace

child's shape on a large

roll of paper. Label each

body part (or use the print-

able body part labels to

match to body parts).

Roll and color - Roll one

of the body parts cubes.

Color the corresponding

body part on the Body

Parts printable. When

you've colored all of the

parts color the clothing

any way you'd like.

Fingerprint exploration -

Use ink to make finger-

prints on paper. Include

the fingerprints of family

members too. Use a mag-

nifying glass to examine

the fingerprints. See if you

can match fingerprints to

individual fingers.

Match the body parts -

Look at pictures of the

whole family. Print out

photos of just eyes, noses,

fingers, etc. Try to match

the body parts to the right

family member. (TF)

Mirror observations -

Look in a mirror and make

observations about your-

self. Record observations

on paper or in a science

journal. Use descriptive

words. (TF)

Literacy All about me book -

Complete this printable

book together.

Brainstorming words -

Brainstorm a list of words all

about you. Make columns

for “I Am . . .” and “I Can . .

. “ Write descriptive words

under “I Am”, and write

action words under “I

Can”.

Family names - Print out

pictures of family members

and close friends as well as

name cards for each.

Match the names to the

pictures.

Take a survey - Take a

poll about what everyone

wants to be when they

grow up (call friends or

extended family to collect

more data). Extend by

making the information

into a handmade book or

chart with illustrations.

Word puzzles - Print out

the body part word

puzzles. Cut into strips.

Child can reassemble

these word puzzles. Discuss

letters and sounds while

doing so.

Other Family portrait - Use your

favorite art materials to

create a family portrait.

Label each member of the

family.

Sensory self-portrait - Use

play dough and loose

parts to create self-

portraits. TF)

Full body art - Use paint

and craft supplies to dec-

orate the large drawing of

your child that was made

during science time.

Name sensory bin - Fill a

bin with your favorite

sensory fillers. Add letters

to make family members’

names. Alternatively, add

the photos and name

cards from the “family

names” literacy activity.

Favorite things collage -

Glue a picture of the child

to the middle of a piece of

paper. Have kids cut pic-

tures out of magazines or

draw items around the

photo to show some of his

or her favorite things

(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

Math

All about me number cards -

Use the printable cards to count,

put in numerical order, or prac-

tice one-to-one correspondence

with.

Body parts cards - Use the

printable cards to practice sorting

or pattern-making.

How tall am I? exploration -

Leave the strings that measured

height in the math lesson plans

out for kids to continue measuring

on their own.

Literacy

Family word puzzles - Print out

pictures of different family

members on printer paper. Write

the appropriate name on the

bottom of the photo. Cut into

strips - one strip for each letter in

the name. Child can reassemble

them. Could also be done with

magnetic letters.

Science

Dry erase faces - Laminate or

place face mats in plastic sheet

protectors. Have kids use dry

erase markers to add facial

features. (TF)

Sensory

Build-a-face story stones - Use

these homemade rocks to ex-

plore emotions and talk about

facial features. (TF)

Block Play

Family Blocks - Add photos of

child and family members to

large wooden blocks. Children

can build with them or use them

alongside their building creations.

Lego self-portraits - Use dry

erase markers to add faces and

bodies to structures.

Arts and Crafts

Funny faces - Use magazine cut

outs to make silly self portraits.

Finger painting - Free paint with

different colors of finger paint. (TF)
