    February 6-February 10, 2012This week students will work to develop their skills of characterization, identification of figurative language, genre,

    and vocabulary.

    MondayLearning Objectives:

    Students will be able to find and use textual evidence of the characterization crafted by the author.

    Students will increase their reading fluency.Activities:

    Students will take a vocabulary exam and a timed ISAT preparatory exam that will help us determinewhich skills the students need more work on.

    Students will present the character bio poems that they created and explain why they wrote what they did. As a class students will take turns reading out loud, in order to increase their fluency, stopping to discuss

    new character details and the elements used in the characterization and figurative language.

    Reading Goals: Rm 296: Finish Part 1 of Fahrenheit 451 Rm 292: Act 2 of The Crucible Rm 296: Ch.3-4 of A Matter of Trust

    TuesdayLearning Objectives:

    Students will use their knowledge of root words and context clues to define new vocabulary and reviewvocabulary from previous units. Students will research historical events and eras in order to make connections between the novel and these

    events and analyze how the format of the novel/play is used to create a message about these events.

    Students will be able to identify and apply figurative language.Activities:

    Students will play vocabulary taboo. Students will be separated into groups and each group will be responsible for a different topic: popular

    culture, religion, politics, and technology. They will turn their findings into an advertisement for the time

    period and try sell their classmates on their topic. After learning about all of the topics students will use this

    information to analyze the text and its relation to these topics in a paragraph.

    As the class reads the teacher will point out figurative language, and call on students to describe theirmeaning eventually leaving it up to the students to point out these literary devices. Students must use

    figurative language in their analytic paragraphs about the text and their historical context. Reading Goals: Rm 296: pg.71-86 Rm 292: Finish Act 2 Rm 296: Ch.5-6

    WednesdayLearning Objective:

    Students will be able to find main ideas, recall facts and details, and understand sequence. Student will be able to make inferences about the relationship between characters using textual evidence.

    Activities:

    The teacher will use the results of the ISAT prep taken on Monday to place students in groups based onwhich skills they need to improve. Students will be given packets to complete that will help to develop the

    skills listed above and the teachers will rotate amongst the groups to assist and give individual instruction.

    The teacher will read out loud stopping frequently to check for understanding and lead discussions abouttheme.

    Students will start to write a letter in which they describe the main character. These letters will be authoredby one character to another. This assignment will ask students apply their knowledge of characterization

    into a work of their own.

    ThursdayLearning Objectives:

    Students will be able to identify the meaning of certain vocabulary in a nonfiction passage. Students will be able to find main ideas using their prior knowledge of vocabulary. Students will be able to critically analyze their classmates work and be able to use feedback in order to

    enhance their own work.

    Students will be able to analyze textual evidence to characterize characters.Activities:

    The teacher will review the vocabulary sections that were due for homework and lead the class in theanalysis of a nonfiction article. It will be read out loud by students to give them practice on their fluency

    and the answers to the prompts will be discussed as a class.

    Students will participate in a board race game that will assess their mastery of this weeks vocabulary andprepare them for their exam the next day.

    Students will read, critique and revise their classmates character letters. Reading Goals: Rm 296: pg.113-130 Rm 292: Finish Act 3 Rm 295: Ch. 8-9

    FridayLearning Objectives:

    Students will use their knowledge of characterization to analyze characters from different novels. Students will be able to apply their background knowledge and that of genre.

    Activities:

    Students will take a vocabulary exam. Students will create character recipes that requires them to select details and characteristics that a specific

    character is made up of. They will write these on colorful paper and they will be hung throughout the

    classroom.

    The teacher will resume the discussion of genre and its importance (that was raised in Tuesdays lesson)and students will select a passage and change it into a different genre. EX: A play into a novel, a novel to aplay or poem, a novel to a nonfiction passage.
