Lessons learned fromBoalemo REDD+ Demonstration Project
to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change

1) Background
3
• “Gobel Group”(Panasonic Indonesia) started this project in 2011, together with Boalemo communities, Boalemo Government, and Kanematsu Corp., Japan.
In Gorontalo, we see “Slash & Burn”(Shifting Agriculture) of Corn
4
Corn farmers, who want more income, cut the trees even in sloped area to expand their farm land. This is the Deforestation Driver in Gorontalo.
• Since 2001, new Gorontalo province has provided subsidy for Corn agriculture.

This policy was very successful, because this made new industry, and to improve community livelihood.
However, from the satellite, we see the trend of Deforestation.

Unfortunately, the new corn industry caused the deforestation in Gorontalo. This is now major reason
of CO2 emission in the province.
Flood in Gorontalo city

The deforested area cannot keep the rain water, and then, the heavy rain frequently makes river flood in the city area.
Draought due to “El Niño” in 2015

Source: 2015/Oct AgForIn 2015, due to “El Nino”, the corn farmers in Gorontalo had no sufficient rain, and suffered from production loss.
They want alternative crops to produce.
2) REDD+ Activity
9
• This project might be a good practice or good example of REDD+ project activity.
– Preferably, we hope the project is well evaluated as both “Mitigation” and “Adaptation”
– ”Mitigation”: CO2 emission reduction by REDD+ activities;
– “Adaptation”: Cacao makes rather stable production than Corn under high temperature and less rain water.

How to make good quality cacao beansto sell at higher price
We have already started buying fermented cacao beans from Boalemo farmers, and sold these beans to Japanese company at
higher price than usual. Farmers are very much motivated.
The huge commodity market does not want Fermented cacao beans.

Now, Japanese market needs Fermented cacao beans. 16
Japanese chocolate companies “Tokyo-Food” and “DariK” visited Boalemo farmers to check the quality of fermented cacao beans.

Many stakeholders participate in our project, and support the restoration of Gorontalo forest.
