Introduction
When the first Lutheran hymnal was published in Germany in 1524, it contained only eighthymns. Four were by Martin Luther. A second hymnal, published several months later,contained 37 hymns, 24 by Luther. The great reformer took the lead in supplying hymnsfor the first Lutheran hymnals for three reasons: he wanted Christians to sing of Christ andhis love, he wanted them to sing songs in which they confessed their faith in the teachingsof the Bible, and he wanted to encourage poets and composers to produce more hymns forChristians to sing.
By God’s grace and surely under his guidance, Martin Luther’s pacesetting contributionsin hymnody fostered a virtual outburst of congregational song in the Christian church.In the centuries since the Reformation, thousands of poets and composers, not only fromthe Lutheran church but also from other denominations, have written texts and craftedmelodies that enable Christians to sing about Christ in a biblical and beautiful way.Wherever the gospel has been proclaimed and the Holy Spirit has brought people into thechurch, believers have experienced the faith-born desire to join their voices in Christ-centered songs. Poets and composers from many cultures and on every continent haveproduced hymns for Christians to sing.
When Christians sing hymns and spiritual songs that have roots in cultures and times otherthan their own, they put into practice their belief that God’s people of all ages and placesare members of one holy, apostolic, and universal church. As they walk through theweariness of life, Christians are strengthened not only by the peace that comes from thegospel and the joy they find in singing but also by the reality that millions of believers, onearth and in heaven, are one with them in faith and song.
Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, offered to the congregations of the WisconsinEvangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) in 1993, widened that denomination’s hymnexperiences and delighted many who were eager to sing a song of Christ in new anddifferent styles. The committee that produced this hymnal felt strongly about includinghymns and carols from many eras, nations, and cultures. In fact, the resolution thatauthorized Christian Worship instructed the committee to publish a hymnal that reflected“the larger perspective and mainstream of the worship of the Christian church.” As statedin the hymnal’s introduction, Christian Worship includes “in addition to Lutheranchorales and traditional English hymnody, a wide selection of plainsong hymns,spirituals, folk hymns from Appalachia, Wales, Ireland, and elsewhere, gospel hymns, andcontemporary hymns in different styles.”
While work was in progress on Christian Worship, the request to publish a book withadditional songs was presented to the WELS Commission on Worship. Although thecommission deemed such a book desirable, it recommended that actual publication be
delayed until after the new hymnal was available. The subcommittee appointed to study theproposal reported its findings to the commission in 1991. The committee expressed theopinion that a definite need for such a songbook existed. Its report stated that “in schools itwould provide a resource of music for junior choirs and classroom use beyond what thehymnal can supply. The songbook would also be usable in Sunday school and vacationBible school programs where simpler music is sometimes desirable. Cross-culturalministries would also welcome its use to provide music closer to the background of someethnic groups, as well as easier music to introduce them to worship.”
With the encouragement of the WELS Commission on Youth Discipleship and theDivision of Home Missions, the Commission on Worship appointed a committee andauthorized it to begin selecting songs for a book that would include some of these neededresources. Over the next several years, the committee went about the task of choosingappropriate texts and melodies. Serving on the committee were Carl Nolte (chairman),Mark Braun, Ned Goede, Mark Jeske, Daniel Koelpin, Michael Pfeifer, Mary Prange, andLeonard Proeber. The Commission on Worship reviewed the songs that were proposed,offered editorial suggestions, deleted a few selections, and authorized publication.
Let All the People Praise You is not intended to be a replacement for Christian Worship:A Lutheran Hymnal. For that reason, it includes no orders of worship, prayers, or songsfound in that hymnal. A hymnal unites a church body as a worshiping community andallows its many congregations and members to confirm their confessional unity by meansof hymns and songs they share and sing together. The hymnal is wisely the preeminent andprimary resource in the worship life of every congregation. Let All the People Praise Youwill be useful where leaders and people feel a need in their specialized ministries for moreof the kind of songs and hymns that the hymnal offers only in limited quantity.
All of the texts included in Let All the People Praise You have been carefully reviewed fordoctrinal content. Changes were made in several texts to express biblical truth morecompletely. Obviously, not all songs will match the doctrinal precision of the LutheranConfessions. It is in the nature of poetry to express biblical truth in imagery and metaphor,not only in doctrinal language. Not every song in Let All the People Praise You is intendedfor public worship, but each song does sing of Christ in its own way. Every song, as theSpirit carries out his work, may lead a person closer to Christ’s love and give someone elsea vehicle with which to praise Christ’s holy name.
Martin Luther’s statement that “next to the Word of God, music deserves the highestpraise” is often quoted. The observation comes from Luther’s preface to a 1538 Germanhymnal. He goes on to speak about the benefits of singing: “For whether you wish tocomfort the sad, to terrify the happy, to encourage the despairing, to humble the proud, tocalm the passionate, or to appease those full of hate . . . what more effective means thanmusic could you find?” (Luther’s Works, American Edition, Vol. 53, p. 323). May thissongbook prove itself spiritually beneficial to the people of God as they make music intheir hearts to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19).
