When they become less negative, you find more reasons to be grateful and a wonderful cycle begins! And being grateful seems to grow exponentially! You find one reason to be grateful and then all of a suddenthere is another and another! And pretty soon, reasons to be grateful hold all the difficulty in your life in a gentle and healing way. Gratitude is one of the most transformative spiritual practices we know of. It is possible to be grateful anywhere, anytime and it doesnt cost us a penny. Now that is another reason to be grateful! The Center gives people of all faiths, back-

grounds, and ages the space to dream, grow,

and become fully alive—physically, mentally,

emotionally, and spiritually. “A place for celebration, enrichment and healing”

“Let Gratefulness overflow into blessing all around you.”

~ Brother David Steindle-Rast ~

Ahh….Tis the season to give Thanks! Always in November we talk about Gratitude and being Thankful, but generally we consider it from the point of what Gratitude can do for “us”…for “me.” For instance:

Gratitude will make me more appreciative! Gratitude will make me less depressed.

Gratitude will make me more pleasant to be around. It will help me sleep better at night.

It will promote harmony in my family and my work situation. Gratitude will help me live longer and live better.

Now, all that is very often true…but being grateful is also a very powerful tool for bringing peace into our world because Gratitude is contagious. Gratitude cannot be contained but by its very nature, seeps out even without our being aware of it. We find less to complain about so we don’t increase the negativity around us. Gratitude helps us to feel compassionate towards those who have less and often times we are more generous towards them as well because we feel so ‘rich’ (and I’m not talking about money). Gratitude helps us to be generous with our time, talents and our treasure. In turn, the recipients of our generosity find the world a little kinder and softer and they begin to feel grateful. Gratitude can be present in all and any situations. When others begin to ramp up the complaints and resent-ments, remaining aware of what you are grateful for not only seems to protect you from all that negative energy, but there seems to be a palpable shift of energy in the room. The complaints will often lose their energy and those complaining just may begin to see life in a different light. When they become less negative, you find more reasons to be grateful and a wonderful cycle begins! And being grateful seems to grow exponentially! You find one reason to be grateful and then all of a sudden…there is another and another! And pretty soon, reasons to be grateful hold all the difficulty in your life in a gentle and healing way. Gratitude is one of the most transformative spiritual practices we know of. It is possible to be grateful anywhere, anytime and it doesn’t cost us a penny. Now that is another reason to be grateful!

Ah yes…tis the season of Gratefulness. Let us give thanks and be glad! Amen!

Spiritual Companionship Spiritual Direction (Companionship) is a long time non-denominational practice that offers a person confidential space to reflect upon the intersection of their lives and God's presence. If you would like to make an appointment with a Certified Spiritual Director, please call The Center at 708-361-3650. We will have one of our Spiritual Directors give you a call to make an appointment with you. The cost is $30/hr.

FARM & NATURE DISCOVERY SCHOOL

Our school is bustling with the addition of the new preschool classes and the first grade. I love to see the hallways filled with children’s artwork. It has been a great first few months with terrific weather. We have been all over the farm and explored everything from the pumpkin fields to the pine forest and from the log cabins to ranch camp. The weather has been wonderful this fall with a little rain. We are getting ready to have a wonderful month studying birds. This is probably the most interesting theme and my personal favorite. I always learn so much. We make food for the birds

and study their habitats. We identify what birds we have here at the farm and watch them in our bird feeders in our playground. We will also be hav-ing our Thanksgiving feast this month, which is a treat for all of us. Our won-derful parents contribute all the food and the students enjoy everything from turkey to pumpkin pie and everything in between. There are a few openings, so you are interested in a tour or information for next fall please call and we can mail a brochure or schedule a tour.

Leave a lasting legacy…. Include The Center in your estate plan.

Did you know it costs nearly $5,000 a day to fund The Center? While we strive to maintain our buildings and grounds to make it look like we might not need money, in reality we do depend on charitable contributions to continue our operations. As always, we also depend on a lot of love and elbow grease to keep things running smoothly. Today, your charitable giving to The Center is an outstanding way to give voice to your values and priorities in our community. It is also vital to the continued operation of the programs that we all know and love—about one-quarter of our operating budget is financed through charitable contributions. In the future, by including The Center in your estate plan right now, you can help ensure our oper-ations for years or even generations to come. Recent legacy gifts have made possible repairs and capital improvements that would have been very difficult in their absence. If you have any questions about leav-ing The Center a gift from your estate, please contact Executive Director Dave Sanders.

TUESDAY LUNCHEONS ~ NOON - 2 P.M.

Every Tuesday at The Center, we have a delicious luncheon followed by an enlightening program on travel, nature, art, book reviews, personal growth, world affairs, spirituality, or other topics of interest. Cost is $22. Please make reservations by the Sunday before the luncheon.

Tuesday, Nov. 7 ~ “Round the World on a Penny” with Ellie Carlson Anita Willets Burnham was an artist, author and visionary who boldly took her family of five around the world, twice, in the 1920s. They went third class, she said, “only because there wasn’t a fourth.” After years of encouragement from friends and her art students, she wrote a book about their adventures and launched herself into the lecture circuit to promote it. Mrs. Burnham was fortunate, later in life to discover a man who invented a time machine. In exchange for her painting portraits of his family, he sends her forward in time to your event. Mrs. Burnham very much enjoys the 21st century and always regrets that she must come without her paint box. Tuesday, Nov. 14 ~ Why SAGE? Come join us for a delicious Farm to Table meal featuring menu items that were grown and raised as part of our Sustain-able Agriculture and Green Education program. Following lunch, Amy DiDominicis, The Center and SAGE Program Di-

rector, will talk about SAGE’s growth in 2017 and why SAGE products are better for the community and your family. Amy is passionate about this program and is determined to get the community’s support behind a product line that though costs more, is far superior on many levels. If you’ve had any interest or curiosity about this program, come join us!

Tuesday, Nov. 21 “Abe & Mary Lincoln” with Max & Donna Daniels This program features an evening with Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln at the White House—Just before they leave for Ford's Theater…! Max and Donna have an extensive background in community theatre and have been portraying Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln profes-sionally since 1988. They are past Vice-Presidents of the National Association of Lincoln Presenters and have received its awards for "Best Abraham," "Best Mary," "Best Abraham and Mary Lincoln Team," and "Lincoln Legend.” They have been featured on C-Span, in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate series, the "Someone You Should Know" program on ABC Channel 7, and the Investigating History series on the History Channel. They have per-formed at the Lincoln Home Visitor Center in Springfield, Illinois and at the Smithsonian Institution. Max and Donna research and write their own original scripts.

Tuesday, Nov. 28 “A World of Stories” with Shanta Join Shanta as she encircles her audience in an unforgettable experience of creativi-ty and culture. Shanta is a world traveler, and this program combines stories of Af-rican origin with stories and music from India, China, and other parts of the world. Shanta’s performances of stories and songs of African people have graced the stages of ethnic arts festivals, performing arts series, festivals, museums, churches, and virtually anyplace where people gather for enjoyment, information, community-building, and inspiration. Drawing from a large repertoire of narratives, her perfor-mances evoke laughter, surprise and sometimes even tears.

Emerson Hill Night: Bob Cratchit Night coming December 10! Please call 708.361.3650 to sign up after Nov. 15
