Handy HintsDrying:• Freestanding pieces look best when left to dry with right

side down. This will minimize the tendency for a piece to curl. Be sure to flatten the piece out entirely and allow ample time to dry.

For 3D Applique Projects:• Adhere 1 layer of OESD StabilStick TearAway to the

back of applique fabrics with temporary adhesive spray BEFORE hooping or placing down for tackdown and cut in place. This gives fabric a more rigid structure.

• A pair of alligator clamps, tweezers, hemostats, stiletto or a tiny crochet hook can be extremely helpful when inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (See Diagram 1 for explanation of “buttonette” and “eyelet”.)

• Insert the tip of the tweezers, hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette and pull through the eyelet. Or a stiletto could be used to push the buttonette through the eyelet.

Supplies:Embroidery Thread:• Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin as the needle.

Needles:• Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for extended needle life.

Stabilizer:• Use water-soluble stabilizer or film water-soluble stabilizer.

General Freestanding Applique Guidelines

General Applique Instructions1. Hoop two layers of OESD AquaMesh Stabilizer.2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of

your choice.3. Stitch the Placement Stitch. Photo 14. Place a piece of applique fabric over the Placement Stitch

so that it is completely covered.5. Stitch the Cut Line & Tackdown stitch. 6. Carefully cut away the excess applique fabric. Photo 27. Stitch the remainder of the design and repeat for any

remaining pieces. Photo 38. Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from

the hoop. 9. Trim excess stabilizer from the design.

10. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry face down to prevernt curling.

Cut-in-Place Applique Instructions

1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the applique pattern(s).2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you’ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric.3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out. PHOTO 15. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 26. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the applique fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive.7. Place the fabric inside the placement stitch, so that it completely covers the placement stitch and then remove the paper pattern.

NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size. For example, resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%.

TIP: When Printing the patterns, make sure that the “Fit to page” option is UNCHECKED in the Print Dialog Box. If this option is checked the printed patterns will not be actual size.

Embroidery1. Prepare the three pieces (panels 1, 2, and pocket front) for hooping by fusing Fuse and Fleece to the wrong side. Using

temporary spray adhesive, adhere 2 layers of Ultra Clean and Tear stabilizer to the wrong side of the fused fabrics.2. Hoop the fabric selected for panel #1. Select Design #80167-23 and enlarge the design 19% to 136 mm x 189 mm.

Rotate the design if needed to fit and stitch it in the center of the hoop. Stitch. PHOTO 13. Hoop the second panel and select Design #80167-38. Duplicate the design 3 times (for a total of 4) and arrange them

5. Hoop the quilted lower pocket front. Select Design #80167-08 and stitch the design in the center of the hoop using the pattern and the pre-cut appliqué instructions included with the design collection. PHOTO 4

6. Once the designs are stitched, remove the tear-away stabilizers from the back (Fuse and Fleece will remain in the project). 7. Trim each piece to the indicated sizes: Panel 1: 12" x 8½"; Panel 2: 12" x 4¼"; Panel 3: 12" x 6¾".

Braided Panel 3 and Lower Panel 41. Cut the 3" square across the diagonal to make two triangles.2. Place one strip along one straight side of the triangle with right sides together; stitch using a ¼" seam. Unfold and

press. PHOTO 53. Position a second strip along the remaining straight side and stitch in place. Unfold and press. PHOTO 64. Continue adding strips on alternating sides, pressing each one before moving on to the next. PHOTO 75. Trim the pieced fabric to 12" x 6¾". PHOTO 86. Assembly1. Stitch buttons, beads and charms to panel 2 and the pocket front if desired.2. Using ¼" seams, stitch the panels together using the diagram as a guide; press the seams

open. PHOTO 9 3. Prepare the pocket by placing the embroidered pocket front right sides together with the

pocket lining. Stitch along the upper edge using a ¼" seam (lining will be longer). Turn fabrics to the right side, matching the lower raw edges; press. The lining will form a faux binding along the upper edge of the pocket.

4. Position the pocket on the lower panel of the front and baste or pin along the side and lower edges.

5. Create a quilt sandwich with the completed front, batting and backing, using temporary spray adhesive to adhere the layers.

6. Stitch-in-the-ditch along the horizontal seam lines between the panels.7. Overcast or zigzag all four edges of the wall hanging.

1. With right sides out, fold each 5" square in half across the diagonal to form triangles.2. Position the triangles at the upper edge of the quilt, matching raw edges; baste in place along the edges.

Binding1. Fold the bias strip in half lengthwise and press. 2. Starting in the middle of one side, position the binding on the edge, aligning the raw edges.3. Stitch the binding using a ¼" seam; stop ¼" from the corner, pivot and stitch off the edge. PHOTO 114. Flip the bias binding straight up away from the quilt. PHOTO 125. Fold the binding straight down and align the raw edges. PHOTO 136. Continue stitching, mitering the remaining corners in the same manner. 7.
