THE GOOD NEWS FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH | DECEMBER 2019
I have a confession.
I am a Martha Stewart in recovery. I may also be a biblical Martha (you know, sister of Mary and Lazarus) in recovery.
For years, I cultivated the perfect fantasy holiday season, beginning with a neighborhood Halloween party, continuing through multi-day Thanksgiving feasts, and moving right on through the perfectly decorated, gifted and toasted Christmas and New Year holidays.
Every Christmas letter was packed full of the latest family news – and by news I mean accomplishments. We had the witty writing style down, the rotation of kids’ storylines every three years, and it always fit perfectly on one double-sided 8.5 x 11 with the tiniest margins. The family photo was flawless. And it was in the mail with an appropriate Christmas stamp by December 10 each year.
Keeping that up is costly. I’m not just talking about it being financially draining. Keeping all of that up was soul-taxing. Creating my idea of goodness and perfection was exhausting. And it was a little bit like being on a hamster wheel. I spent a lot of time chasing goodness, chasing perfection, chasing affirmation, chasing love because I thought all of those appearances mattered.
And I never found the love, acceptance or happiness that I was chasing in those holiday seasons. I
always found myself aching for more of what I could not seem to find.
About 13 years ago, I had some major life shifts – the kind that wipe out all prior expectations about what wholeness and success look like, the kind that make survival the focus.
In the midst of that chaos, a season when nothing was as it had been, I started a practice of “keeping Advent.” Now as the days grow short and the darkness creeps in, I move through the four weeks of advent watching to see what God is doing, watching to see what is about to be born in the world…watching for the Jesus of history, mystery and majesty to be revealed all around me in ordinary things.
Advent is four blissful weeks of watching and waiting with expectation for the world to be changed as God enters in. I finally
caught onto something - that watching and waiting shouldn’t feel like a hamster wheel.
I keep Advent by intentionally choosing quiet and stillness when I can. I keep Advent by finding a set of Advent readings or practices to keep as part of my daily prayer time. I keep Advent by seeking to be fully present in whatever activity I am doing – not thinking about the next thing on the checklist, the next activity on the calendar. In a time of year when schools and families and even churches are putting more and more out there for us to do and be and consume, keeping Advent means making space to watch and to wait for what God is doing in the world.
…Because what God is doing in the world is so much bigger than anything I can do or create.
Let’s keep Advent together as a church. Amen?
Let’s Keep Advent Together…

Beginning December 1, we enter into Advent, a season of keeping watch. We’re not just passive observers of Christmas
though—we are called to watch and work and grow and expect God to show up. At Faith UMC, we’re working hard to share more light in the world. During the season of Advent, through the stories of Mary, Joseph, and John the Baptist, the arrival of a baby who would be called Jesus, and an amazing all-music worship experience on December 15, we’ll imagine how we make a difference, what is being born in us today, and how Christmas might be more than a season but a way of being all year round.

As we head into Advent and another season of hope, love, joy, and peace, I (Michael Wu) am struck by how planning and coincidence converge. As I write this, Venice, Italy, is experiencing its worst flooding in decades. This past summer, thinking about special music for Advent, the Chancel Choir and I thought it time to present a time-honored seasonal favorite, the Gloria by Venice-
native Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, 1678-1741. This presentation of Vivaldi’s Gloria, RV 589, will occur during
the 10 a.m. Sunday Worship December 15th. The Chancel Choir, Bob Holder, and I will be joined by Stephen Czarkowski and string quartet.
Vivaldi was nicknamed the “Red Priest” because of his naturally red hair and because the circumstances around his birth— an earthquake around the city as well as his poor health initially—caused his mother to dedicate his life to the priesthood.
Vivaldi is regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons.
Many of his compositions were written for the all-female music
ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children. Vivaldi had worked there as a Catholic priest for just over a year, and he was employed there from 1703-1715, and from 1723-1740. This Gloria was written for that
Ospedale around the year 1715. The Ospedale prided itself on the quality of its musical education and the excellence of its choir and orchestra. This, his most famous choral piece, presents the traditional Gloria from the Latin
Mass in twelve varied cantata-like sections.
Today Vivaldi is one of the most popular of all composers, who during his lifetime enjoyed considerable success and fortune, which he squandered through extravagance, and when he died in Vienna he was buried in a pauper’s grave. For two centuries after his death, the Gloria lay undiscovered
until the late 1920s, when it was found buried among a pile of forgotten Vivaldi manuscripts. However, it was not performed until September 1939 in Siena in an edition by the composer Alfredo Casella. It was not until 1957 that the now familiar original version was published and given its first performance at the First Festival of Baroque Choral Music at Brooklyn College, New York.
[The majority of this information comes from Peter Carey, writing for the Royal Free Singers ensemble in the United Kingdom. They are posted at http://www.choirs.org.uk/
prognotes/Vivaldi Gloria (Royal Free).htm, which I accessed November 21, 2019.]
We pray for people impacted by war, natural disaster, illness, suffering, loss, and things that never get mentioned in church because they are too personal. May we continue to keep the people of Venice in our prayers. They will need time and resources to recover.
Strathmore Children’s Chorus, December 8, 4:00pm If you need more special music through this December, I invite you to see the Strathmore Children’s Chorus in concert at the Music Center, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, as they perform 4 p.m. Sunday, December 8. Their program, “Great American Folksong for the Holidays,” features the GRAMMY-winning duo Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer and their band, arranging music for children’s choirs. The ensembles of SCC are also joined by the second year of Sing Out! programs at Argyle and Parkland Middle Schools as they present familiar and new renditions of time-honored American favorites, from

Reverse Advent Calendar This year we are so excited to be partnering with the Preschool in a “Reverse Advent Calendar” collection to benefit the Manna Food Center . Each family in our congregation who would like to participate may pick up a box from their Sunday School classes.Along with your child, we encourage you to add to your box daily from December 1-24 using the suggestions from the list on page 12 or other non-perishable items.
You are invited to bring your box to the Christmas Eve Family Service, December 24 at 4:30pm, or return the box to the church no later than January 6. You don’t have to have a child in Sunday school to participate. The whole congregation is welcome to join in - just choose a box from home, fill it up using the list, and return it.
“Deck the Halls” to “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Sing Out!, part of Bloom by Strathmore, brings the arts to communities where there are social and economic barriers to access. This partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools to bring choirs to Title I schools with no
chorus programs and generate interest and enthusiasm to add chorus to that participating school’s curriculum is the on-going project that is a result of my doctoral thesis.
Ellen and I want to wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season, a blessed Advent, a Merry
Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued support of Faith Church and its music ministries!

Quarters for Kids A Gift for the Children at the UMC Board of Child Care Faith Church is supporting the Christmas Appeal from the UMC
Board of Child Care (BCC) by collecting “quarter stockings” over the Advent season. This is our fourth year supporting this cause and we hope contributions will push us over the $1,000 cumulative total.
Empty paper “Quarter stockings” will be distributed on December 1 and collected back through December 29. Just drop your
stocking in the wooden chest or the offering plate. Your contribution will be used to fund presents and holiday celebrations for BCC’s children and youth
throughout the year. After those needs are met, gifts will be directed to BCC’s most pressing program needs.
BCC has Residential Services;
campuses that provide engaging experiences within a safe, structured setting. Using Group Homes, residents can integrate
within the community and attend public school while also acquiring independent living skills. Strawbridge School is a special and
regular education school specializing in serving youth with learning, health, emotional, and behavioral disabilities. Treatment Foster Care Homes provide
therapeutically structured home environments for ages 2 to 21. The Mental Health Clinic employs
licensed therapists and a child psychiatrist helping children and families navigate difficult times. The Early Learning Program gives
quality childcare focused on the growth and development of children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Adoption Services provides
families both pre and post adoption assistance.

Meet Dr. Belinda Forbes, Missionary to Nicaragua December 3, 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall Come meet Dr. Belinda Forbes, one of the missionaries that Faith supports. Dr. Forbes is a dentist serving in Managua, Nicaragua with Acción Médica Cristiana (Christian Medical Action or AMC), a Nicaraguan Christian ecumenical organization specializing in community health and development in impoverished rural communities. Dr. Forbes uses her dental education and skills to serve the people of Nicaragua.
Of her assignment, Dr. Forbes says, “AMC’s model for local empowerment allows my contribution to be long-lasting and sustainable. AMC is committed to health education and promotion, farming and nutrition, disaster prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention, clean water and sanitation,
women’s health, and youth leadership. AMC’s successes are based on community participation and the values of faith and justice.”
Dr. Forbes’s call to follow where her faith leads began in her early teens. After years of studying both Spanish and dentistry, she went to Nicaragua to serve as a missionary for one year. Nearly 30 years later she continues to work with dentists and other healthcare professionals with Accion Medica Cristiana.

Staff Gift Dear Members of Faith,
As you make plans to connect with your families and friends this Christmas season, please remember the importance of your Faith Church family. Our staff works hard to provide a wonderful church home for us to enjoy all year long. Over the past year, their commitment, dedication and in many cases extra “above and beyond” effort, have been incredibly important. They have ensured that the church ran smoothly despite the six-month absence of a permanent pastor, that our office and administrative activities continued and that our
education and music ministries remained strong. In addition, we have been very blessed by the addition of Pastor Laura beginning this past July.
Particularly this year, we want to acknowledge and thank our staff for their valuable service by continuing our tradition of giving a monetary gift of support as a year-end Christmas present for the staff at Faith. Please consider sending a check to the church office or placing a gift in the offering plate marked “Staff Christmas Gift” by Sunday December 21 as your way of sharing your gratitude to all the people who have given us so
many gifts of Christian service throughout the year.
May you and your family share in all the joys and wonders that the Christmas season brings.
Sincerely, Susan Ferris Wyderko, Chair, Staff-Parish Relations Committee

“Who Are We?” Study with Pastor Laura Begins Monday, January 6, 8:30-9:30pm via Zoom
WHO ARE WE? As the church faces an uncertain future, churches in the Baltimore-Washington Conference are called to explore the heart of their faith with this 18-week interactive study on who we are as a people of God, as United Methodists, and as the people of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.
WHY THIS STUDY NOW? Our beloved denomination is in the midst of another pivotal moment in history. Globally, in our churches, we are considering the future of the denomination, what it means to be the Church, what it means to be United Methodists, and what it means to be spirit-filled Christ followers making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world in this present age. Some may question, “Will we remain united? Will we create a new form of unity? Will we dissolve? Will the Church continue to be able to give a faithful voice and witness to the will of God in the days ahead? What is the will of God?” There are many
conversations and many questions that may arise in our uncertainty. We can see the ground shift as we engage in strategic sessions, pour over new plans, and predict the year to come. These are natural and necessary steps. And amidst all of our uncertainty, this we know for sure – God is. God is with us and God’s Spirit
has the power to birth in us a common understanding of how we might live together, disciple together, love together and serve God together.
This Bible Study was developed so that we might enter into a process of discernment and wonder together. It isn’t meant to cater to one outcome or cajole participants into a certain line of thinking. Rather, receive this study as an invitation into communal dialogue chiefly interested in our common roots and the common interest we share as United Methodists within the universal body of Christ today.
This study was designed to center us in our core identity. And so we ask – Who are we? Who are we as the people of God? Who are we as the people called Methodists shaped by Wesleyan theology? Who are we as the members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference? Who are we becoming as we journey on toward perfection? It is our deepest hope that you will allow responses to emerge around the room and that
you will receive these responses with great care. Furthermore, it is our hope that as we study and wrestle with Scripture alongside people we know, and hopefully with people we do not know so well, that we will pay close attention to and compassionately engage one another, quiet ourselves and await God’s voice in our discernment in order to make room for emerging responses that can guide us.
We are hoping to offer this in multiple formats. Right now, Pastor Laura is scheduled to teach this class in a ZOOM video conference format. Sessions will run from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays – parents of young children take note! We really hope
this format works for your lives!!
Part 1 – Who are we as the people of God? January 6 – February 10
Part 2 – Who are we as United Methodists?
Feb 24, March 2, 9, 30, April 6 & 13 (Easter Monday)
Part 3 – Who are we as the people of the Baltimore Washington Conference? April 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25 (Memorial Day – possibly slide to Tuesday May 26), June 1
If you are interested in participating in this study, please

Stewardship 2020: Many thanks to
everyone who has submitted a financial commitment card for 2020. To date we have commitments totaling more than $420,000 for the coming year. We are committed to meeting our goal to double our Missions Budget but, in order to do that, we need the support of the whole congregation. If you have not yet submitted your commitment card, extras are available in the pews. Completed cards can be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the church office. Thank you for your generous giving, faithful stewardship and for helping your church leadership plan for the coming year!
Electronic Fund Transfer: More
and more of you are electing to enroll in our Electronic Fund Transfer program to ensure that your giving gets to the church regardless of your travels, etc. For many folks who don’t carry cash or checkbooks, this is the easiest way to meet your giving goals by setting it up now for the entire year. There is no cost to you and the program is very flexible. You can set up your giving to occur weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. Additionally, changes can be made with a day’s notice, should your circumstances change. To learn more, contact the church office.
End of the Year Giving: If you
would like your offerings and gifts to be included on your 2019 FUMC giving statement, please be sure that either the church office receives them by December 31st or that the mailing envelope is postmarked by December 31st. Per IRS guidelines, all offerings received during worship on Sunday, January 5th will go on your 2020 FUMC statement, regardless of the date on the check. If you are unsure about your year-to-date giving, please contact Jan Spencer ([email protected]).
