Let the Ten Toe Express Get You WalkingWalking for short trips is a great transportation option that can improve your

health too! Research indicates that walking can lower your risk for diabetes,

heart disease and high blood pressure, increase bone density, and improve

mental health.

Our Ten Toe Express walking program promotes the

transportation and health benefits of a more active lifestyle.

Launched in 2004, the Ten Toe Express has become one of the

cornerstones of our SmartTrips program.

This year the program returns with more amazing

neighborhood walks happening on Thursday evenings at 6pm

and Saturday mornings at 9am through September. These

walks are for everyone — typically 3 to 4.5 miles — and include tours of areas as

diverse as Hillsdale and Multnomah Village, Historic Old Town or the Jade District.

This year we even venture into Milwaukie on the Garthwick and the New Sellwood Bridge Loop walk.

Watch your mailbox for the SmartTrips Order Form and be sure to order the

walking maps, information and tools you need to get out and get active. Or go

online to order today at portlandsmarttrips.org. Then make a plan to join us

and meet new friends on these great walks.

Walking is man’s best medicine.

Portland Vision ZeroOne death on our city streets is too many.

Portland families

deserve safe streets

on which to walk, bike, operate

mobility devices, access transit,

and drive. The Portland Bureau of

Transportation (PBOT) aims to make

our transportation system the safest

possible and move toward zero traffic-

related fatalities and serious injuries

in the next 10 years. This effort is called

Vision Zero.

Although Portland’s traffic fatality rate

is among the lowest of the 50 biggest

cities, the number of pedestrians,

bicyclists and motorists killed on our

roadways each year has remained flat

over the last 20 years. During that time,

an average of 37 Portlanders died in

traffic collisions annually, including

11 pedestrians, 2 bicyclists and

24 motorists.

PBOT is committed to developing

a multi-faceted safety strategy

including street design, traffic

enforcement and education to realize

our vision. You can read more about

Portland’s Vision Zero effort at

visionzeroportland.com.

Experience the Joy of Family Riding!Portland is a great place for family riding.

A supportive community and a city

crisscrossed with miles of bikeways in the form of dedicated lanes,

neighborhood greenways and multi-use paths make it easier than you’d

think to get out and enjoy the breeze in your face and the joy of riding

together as a family.

Our Family Biking Guide is a how-to manual to help you navigate all

stages of family biking — from pregnancy all the way to getting your older

kids ready to ride indepen dent ly to school. Be sure to order your copy

using the SmartTrips Order Form or online at portlandsmarttrips.org.

Thanks for the free transportation materials. Read through them all yesterday evening. Looking forward to trying out some of the walks and taking the #19 bus to downtown Portland.

PORTLAND SMARTTRIPS GIVES

YOU OPTIONS

You Can Help End Distracted DrivingDistracted driving occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off the primary task of driving safely. Texting,

grooming, eating or drinking, talking to

passengers, reading a map or using a

navigation system are all distractions that

increase your risk of being involved in a crash.

Texting is the most alarming distraction

because it requires visual, manual and

cognitive attention from the driver. Sending or

reading a text takes your eyes off the road for

5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the

entire length of a football field blindfolded.

Oregon law prohibits texting and use of handheld cell phones for all drivers with the

exception of police, emergency responders

and drivers in emergency situations. Drivers

under the age of 18 are prohibited from using

cell phones, texting devices and other hand-

held or hands-free wireless electronic devices.

The best way to end distracted driving is to

educate yourself about the danger it poses, and

share this information with friends and family!

TRANSIT TO TRAILS: TriMet is your connection to nature in the city

The Portland metro area has more than 10,000 acres of

parks and natural areas. Whether you’re new to Portland

or just want to explore new areas

beyond your neighborhood, we invite you to

leave the car at home and take TriMet to

enjoy our bounty of outdoor beauty.

Have you been to Kelley Point Park?

This 104 acre park is located at the

confluence of the Columbia Slough and

Willamette and Columbia rivers in North

Portland and offers both paved and

unpaved trails meandering through black

cottonwood forests.

The Springwater Corridor is a 20-mile

multi-use paved trail extending from inner

Southeast Portland to Boring, Oregon.

Following an old railroad right-of-way,

the trail has many entry points accessible

by bus or MAX.

Tryon Creek State Natural Area in Southwest Portland, the only State

Park within the city limits, offers 14 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian

trails. Find directions to all these parks and more at trimet.org and

connect to nature in the city without the traffic and parking hassles.

Thank you so much for all the maps, information and pedometer! I was a bit overwhelmed. It’s a wealth of knowledge and opportunities. I’m slowly getting acquainted with all the transit options. Now I feel more empowered. Much gratitude for the package of goodies!
