The Trumpet JUNE 2014 Dear Ones of St. Michaels, In July of 2011, at the urging of the then Canon to Ordinary of the Diocese of Alabama, Pat Wingo, I came through Anniston on the way back to Chattanooga from serving at my annual camp session in Mississippi. At that point, I was just a possibility for the role of Interim Rector at SMAAA, but Pat thought I should go by and take a look at the place. I had a little bit of difficulty finding the church, but eventually I found my way up Cobb Street, and the church loomed to my left, appearing from behind the trees like some huge ocean liner coming into sight out of the fog. I dont remember what I thought precisely, but surely it included the word, Wow!I had my camera with me to take some pictures. I had been on the road for hours, it was a hot day, and all I wanted to do was to sneak in and sneak right back out without seeing anyone. No such luck. It was so warm inside the church that I remember perspiration running down my back. As I quickly took my pictures and was busy being overwhelmed by the church, through the back door and right up the aisle came Marian Freeman, Helen Goodwin, and John Childs, just having finished lunch in the Parish Hall. Caught! I introduced myself to the trio, and somehow they knew I was not your average tourist checking the place out. (I was still dressed in camp clothes so there was no collar to give me away.) I certainly didnt introduce myself as a candidate for the Interim Rector position, but they just knew. The rest, to coin a phrase, is history. That was just under three years ago! Those three years have been full of joys and challenges, of laughter and tears, of things done and things left undone, but always full! I want to say that I feel very good about the way I have finished up my four decade vocation as a priest. As I said Sunday in my final sermon, theres that Holy Spirit thing so I cant say with complete certainty that I am done.If God calls me to be Chaplain to the Ferrari Formula One team, well, I will catch the next flight to Italy! I can see me now praying with Fernando Alonso! What has made it possible for me to finish up my years of ACTIVE ministry feeling good is the affirmation of me as a priest and as a person you have thrown my way. I can honestly say - like really, seriously, honestly - that you members of St. Michaels have been the most formidably wonderful people I have had the privilege of working with in my entire ministry. Your constant expressions of appreciation for my presence in your lives has warmed my heart. And there is NO greater privilege for a priest than to be welcomed into peoples lives, to share with them the good times and the hard times, the joys and the sorrows. Of all the expressions of appreciation, there is one that sticks out in my mind. I was having lunch with Jim and Susie Ulrey (who along with Ed Wade are personally responsible for my weighing ten pounds more than when I started at SMAAA!) at the Country Club one Sunday after church. I was just sitting there enjoying the good food and fellowship when I heard the sound of children behind me. I turned and saw Avery and Gracie Ward running toward me. They had just finished eating in the next room and had spotted me sitting with the Ulreys. They laughed and shrieked as they ran all the way across the room and jumped on me. I hugged on them for a few seconds and then they ran back to be with Grandma Florence and Grandpa Bryan. But let me tell you . . . affirmation doesnt get any better than that. The girls running to greet me that day is an image I will hold in my heart. So I leave St. Michaels feeling good about our time together. I hope the spirit about the place is positive. Speaking about affirmation, one person wrote me a note months back thanking me for bringing laughter back to St. Michael s. What an enormous compliment! Laughter is such a joyful noise, even when prompted by a sense of humor as weird as mine! Dear Ones of St. Michael’s, In July of 2011, at the urging of the then Canon to Ordinary of the Diocese of Alabama, Pat Wingo, I came through Anniston on the way back to Chattanooga from serving at my annual camp session in Mississippi. At that point, I was just a possibility for the role of Interim Rector at SMAAA, but Pat thought I should go by and take a look at the place. I hope to goodness I joined you in preparing the soil for the planting of seeds that will produce good fruit. (Hint: Following up on our Lenten program this year by doing ministry hand in hand with some of the churches in West Anniston - as well as supporting the Mayor’s vision for the vineyard in which St. Michael’s is planted - would sure produce some great fruit. As St. Michael’s moves into the future, more and more ministry is what will allow it to continue to be a viable and vital part of the community.) Finally, let me thank you from the bottom of my cardiac area for the incredibly delightful reception for me on my next-to-last Sunday. You did good keeping it a surprise. The scrapbook is AWESOME and will be a treasure for henceforth and forevermore, Amen. The gifts from the Money Tree added up to a very, very generous amount. Your cards touched me and the comments made on that occasion most certainly did the same. Thank you, thank you, thank you for that splendid occasion. Although there is no time to do this before having to move out of the apartment and office, I am very much looking forward to returning to Anniston to take that spin around the Talladega Speedway. I will let you know when to come watch and will expect some heavy praying while I am whipping around the track. As you observed after I got you outside for the Dismissal, I went off into the sunset directly from the service on Sunday the 25th by climbing into the back seat of a 1967 Chrysler Imperial Convertible. That was a cool exit if I do say so myself, but it had a purpose beyond being cool. It was a visual demonstration of a reality in the life of the church. Clergy come and go, but when they go they need to really go and stay out of the way of the new person. I will be just a very small footnote in the history of all the clergy who have served St. Michael’s since 1890. But it was great, and I hope we did some things to help steer the church into the future. I wish you well with your new Deacon-in-Charge. God deserves and needs your best efforts and energies. Chris does, too! Please remember that he is just one and you are many. Keep up the good work . . . the Lord’s work. Shalom,

Hugh

Office Hours

We have a new Parish Administrator Kathy Pope.

Kathy is also a volunteer, crisis pregnancy

counselor at Sav-a-life in Anniston on Thursday

afternoons. Therefore, she will be working

through lunch Monday through Friday and

leaving around noon on Thursdays so that she

can continue in that ministry. Please be aware

that there may be times when Chris is out of the

office doing ministry work as well, so there may

not be anyone available in the church office

Thursday afternoons.

Interfaith Ministries

Volunteers are needed for Meals on Wheels! If you

are interested in volunteering, please contact

Interfaith Ministries.

Also, if you are able to donate items such as snacks,

toiletries or garden tools, the Interfaith Community

Garden would be greatly appreciative.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Addendum to Church Directory

Since the church directory was published, it has

become evident that some of our church members

have moved, changed mailing address or changed

phone numbers. During this time, we have also had

new members in our church. The Memorials

Committee would like to ask church members to

check their church directory and see if they need to

update their mailing address or phone number. If

so, please contact Jim or Charlotte McDaniel at

256.782.2285 or email at [email protected].

An addendum sheet will then be developed and

added to the Trumpet for Members to add to their

directory. New members can also be added to the

addendum sheet by calling or emailing

Jim or Charlotte.

Children’s News!

Sunday School

The Godly Play class led by Judy Suther and Deb Pratt will take a break for the Summer. Godly Play will resume September 7th.

Summer Children’s Worship

Summer Children’s Worship for ages 4 and up will begin on June 8th at the 10:30 am service in the Children’s Chapel. The nursery will be available for babies and children under 4.

Acolytes

Acolyte training will continue through the summer. Acolytes should arrive by 10:10 am to serve at the Sunday morning 10:30 am worship service.

Vacation Bible School

Grace Episcopal Church in Anniston will host VBS for children ages 3 to rising 6th graders June 22-26. There will be a VBS kick-off even on Sunday, June 22nd including dinner for the whole family. Children and leaders will return Monday, June 23rd through Thursday, June 26th from 9 am to 12 noon for VBS. A closing celebration will be Thursday, June 26th at 11:30 am followed by a hot dog lunch. We would like to have as many of St. Michael’s children as possible to participate.

Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering, now is a great time to get started. New ministry

opportunities are often available, and existing ministries including Coffee Hour always need

willing volunteers. Please prayerfully consider where your talents could be used and sign up

or call the office.

St. Michael’s Clinic

Thank you so much for your continued support of St. Michael’s Clinic. Your kindness and generosity go a long way in providing community-based clinic services to our area; however, there is one area in which

more help is needed.

Volunteers are urgently needed to help keep the clinic staffed and available to our neighbors. Please consider volunteering of your

time to help at St. Michael’s Clinic.

For more information please see Jackie or call the clinic at 256.236.6060.

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete

And so, He called it ... Dad
