ThiraAn Authentic Greek Cuisine

Design a restraurant in the exisiting Guaranttee Bank Building in Lafayette, Louisiana, which is insprired by a specific internation-al cuisine.

Thira is a greek restraurant inspired by the architectural hillside community of the island of Santorini, Greece. Thira, the official name of the Greek island has architectural elements that echo the exterior of clean white buildings accented with the blues of the Mediterranean Sea. Santorini Island is composed of bright whtie buildings that interlock with not only one another, but also the rugged geology of the island. This idea of interlocking is found in the restraurant Thira. Interlocking is used in a spatial organization iof the main dining area and is seen in the overlap-ping circular shapes of the suspended ceiling. Besides interlock-ing spatial elements, the interlocking concept is also shown in the finishes of Thira. The whitewashed vertical backlit panels are used throughout the restaurant using the circular shapes that echo the ceiling elemens in the main dining area and reinforce the idea of interlocking. The upholstery also use a pattern of interlocking circles in the blues of the Mediterranean Sea.

Concept An “oasis” is a place of living water. Water symbolizes life. One begins a journey in life gracefully and calmly, just as water begins it’s journey as a soothing stream seeping into an active river. As this river moves in a forward motion, it encounters many obstacles along the way, just as an individ-ual experiences in one’s own life. This active river eventually transitions into one entity as it moves collectively into a larger body of water. This concept of waterways and fluidity parallels to the path of an individual’s way of life.

Project The proposed project is to design and create a serene and harmonious “oasis” for the body and mind. Locating this building on the corner of Jefferson Street and West Main Street, with sidewalks and creative landscape, will help give the building an urban feel in downtown Lafayette. Cas-cade Fitness will provide a place of leisure, physically and mentally, allowing people to experience a sense of escape from their busy lifestyles.

A pocket park provides a transitional space in order to fill the void of an empty space between the Chase Tower and Cascade Fitness to continue the urban façade on Jefferson Street. This park will also attract the club’s members, as well as the general public, towards a calm and relaxing envi-ronment. The elements of this building will help provide a space of unity. Cascade Fitness is a multi-use building which will provides services such as fitness, spa treatment, food service, and retail. Factors, such as natural light, will be an important concept used to create positive energy for one’s state of mind. Light will be filtered through a glass wall connecting the calm exterior with the active interior. The interior features natural earth tones with a fluid contemporary aesthetic of an “oasis”.
