Let’s create a world where everyone belongs.

Dear L’Arche Toronto Supporters,

It is with great pride that we share with you our accomplishments from the past year. There were many exciting moments for L’Arche in our community, as well as on the national and international stage. As we refl ect back on these milestones, we are pleased to show you, our supporters, the signifi cant impact that you have on our community.

In 2014, we celebrated 50 years of L’Arche. L’Arche Canada hosted a number of celebratory events including one that featured a L’Arche Toronto Sol Express performance. We also celebrated with over 175 supporters, community members, families and friends at a Jubilee event hosted at the Lithuanian Centre in Toronto. In looking back, we are thankful for all of the support that we have received over the years and are excited to see what the next 50 years of L’Arche brings.

In the latter half of our fi scal year, it was announced that Jean Vanier will receive the 2015 Templeton Prize. He joins a distinguished group of 44 former recipients, including Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. His work is an ongoing inspiration and serves as a constant reminder of the values that our community was founded on.

Our community lived another fulfi lling year in L’Arche, bringing together Assistants, Core Members, volunteers, supporters,

meaningful and self-directed opportunities to Core Members. New positions were created, relationships established, and work anniversaries celebrated, the signifi cance of which we look forward to sharing with you in this annual report.

There were also many innovations within the Sol Express creative/performance arts program. Sol Express was featured in a number of art shows and exhibits, as well as on professional stages across the city of Toronto. The program produced a variety of original works from visual arts to video productions, all with a theme of creating spaces of belonging and embracing difference.

The intolerance of difference that exists in society runs deep and the need to foster welcoming spaces that celebrate unique gifts is paramount to creating a world where everyone is valued. Each and every one of you, our supporters, contributes to our mission and enables our community to live L’Arche, having a transformative impact on society, and creating a world where everyone belongs. We thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Denyse Burns, President and

MISSION Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story.

Foster an environment in community community that

Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships.

Engage in our diverse cultures, working together

Who We Are & What We Do

L’Arche Toronto is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities who share life together. In addition to a vibrant community life, L’Arche Toronto offers daily living support, employment support, and an innovative creative/performance arts program to people with disabilities.

L’Arche began in 1964 when Canadian and Templeton Prize recipient, Jean Vanier invited two men from the local institution to live with him. Jean was horrifi ed at the lack of value society held for these men and others like them, and thought a life of mutual respect and appreciation might serve them all much better. This seed led to the springing up of many homes and communities around the globe, all inspired by Jean’s original vision. L’Arche today is an international network of over 145 intentional communities in over 30 countries centred on the gifts and value of adults who live with intellectual disabilities and the Assistants who come to live, work, and create home with them.

L’Arche is an extraordinary place of welcome made up of members who come from diverse backgrounds, different faith traditions and many different abilities. When persons with an intellectual disability are given a place at the table, they enrich our lives with gifts of wonderment, spontaneity, and directness. They teach us that good relationships matter more than anything else. They inspire us to a deeper gratitude for the many joys of living a simple life.

L’Arche is a global leader as a model for inclusion and respect for people with intellectual disabilities. In a world where competition is intense and people are usually valued by their power and

Our History

possessions, L’Arche announces a radically different value system that focuses on caring faithful relationships based on mutuality and trust.

Meet Greg. Perhaps you already have if you shop at Davidson’s Valu-Mart at Woodbine and Danforth. He’s one of those people that you never forget once you’ve made his acquaintance. On any given day you may catch him singing, dancing or telling a joke.

Greg is a member of L’Arche Toronto and lives in a community home where persons with and without intellectual disabilities live and celebrate life together. He commutes fi ve days a week to his job at Valu-Mart where he has worked for 27 years and is renowned for his work ethic.

Doug Davidson, owner and operator of the store explains, “Greg’s very self-motivated. You just have to let him know what he needs to do. And it’ll get done without any questions asked.”

Greg takes great pride in his work – keeping the store clean is job one. He often can be seen on his knees scrubbing away at some tough-to-get-at area. Greg reveals, “I work hard because I care. It’s a way of saying I love what I do. And that’s how I show I care about the people I work with. And that’s my way of showing I really love my job.”

Loretta, long-time Valu-Mart colleague and close friend to Greg adds, “He is hardworking and willing to help you any time. Greg can’t do enough. He’ll always go out of his way.”

She’s also quick to mention the positive effect that Greg has on store morale: “He’s a playful dude and keeps everything light. He makes life around here better. Greg always has a smile on his face.”

Spend a few minutes with Greg on the job and you catch on quickly that this guy is something of a celebrity. When passing customers call out to Greg by name, he fl ashes a big grin. Doug chuckles when he speaks of Greg’s popularity with the customers – “ He’s a regular fi xture at the store. Customers come up to him. He doesn’t know their name but they know him by name…it’s like he’s famous here!”

When Greg is asked about his rapport with customers, Greg ponders the question and responds thoughtfully, “It makes me feel special. It makes me feel good inside knowing that I’m a real person.”

L’Arche Toronto is profoundly grateful for Valu-Mart’s demonstration of inclusion and diversity by providing meaningful work for Greg for more than a quarter of a century. Along the way, the store’s staff and management have embraced his personality and his presence.

“Everybody’s happy to see him. Some people here are like family to him. He knows he’s accepted,” muses Loretta.

Doug, whose surname is attached to Davidson’s Valu-Mart observes that “Greg’s a good person and great to work with. And he seems to be fulfi lled by doing a good job.”

Now what more could an employer ask of an employee?

He is hardworking and willing to help you any time. Greg can’t do enough. He’ll always go out of his way. ”

For many non-profi t organizations, the contributions of dedicated volunteers are vital to their success and L’Arche Toronto is no exception.

Non-profi t organizations nowadays are empowered with a voice. They are not shy to ask for help when it’s needed. With so many organizations knocking on everyone’s door, we are grateful that many individuals continue to feel compelled to support our cause.

Volunteering is a wonderful part of life for those who pursue it. Providing ourselves with the opportunity to move beyond the scope of our own needs and wants to focus on those of others can provide a deep sense of peace and bring us to a place of grounding.

People with a wide range of interests and a variety of areas of expertise come to volunteer at L’Arche Toronto. Our job is to be connected with our volunteers in a way that enables us to provide them with opportunities that meet their own goals, challenge them to grow, and engage them in the transformative experience of our community.

L’Arche Toronto volunteers help with everything from offi ce administrative tasks and event planning to offering up their skills and talents to our creative/performance arts program,

Sol Express, or sharing their gifts with Core Members and Assistants in our homes.

L’Arche Canada’s “With” campaign has recently attracted more volunteers to connect with our homes in Toronto. This campaign announces that being with and doing things with someone who has an intellectual disability can be fun and mutually enriching for both individuals. We thank our volunteers – old and new – for providing a sense of friendship and belonging by harnessing the power of “with” in various ways, such as: dining with, doing some chores with, doing repairs in the house with, or simply hanging out with.

To all of our volunteers, whether you have spent an evening as a guest chef in one of our homes, helped out at our annual bowl-a-thon, or contributed in one of the many other ways that volunteers do, we thank you for your commitment to L’Arche Toronto and the members of our community. We hope you have been as enriched by your experience, as we have been by your involvement with our community.

To all our volunteers, we would to thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

L’Arche Toronto’s Annual Alley Oop! continues to grow!…over $40,000 was raised to support our community’s mission of creating a world where everyone belongs.

On May 3, 2014, over one hundred attendees joined our signature spring fundraising event. Accessible to all, the Alley Oop! has served not only as a fundraiser, but as a community get-together for the past 12 years! Everyone enjoyed a morning of bowling fun, raffl e prizes at our Loonie Draw, and bidding at our silent auction table. The proceeds were directed to various initiatives, including: maintaining and upgrading the accessibility of our community homes and vehicles, supporting our creative arts program, Sol Express, and widening our reach through our outreach and educational programs.

In addition to core members, community members, families and friends, the Alley Oop! was attended by members of the local business community and guest speaker, Michael Prue, who served as the MPP for the Beaches-East York riding for 13 years.

Thank you to all of the event’s attendees, donors, supporters, and volunteers for making 2014 another great bowlathon year!

Meet Lola

Lola, the newest Core Member of L’Arche Toronto, moved into Greenwood House last summer.

“It’s gonna rain,” warns Lola each time that familiar graphic symbol shows up on her favorite TV channel, CP 24. She wants to make sure we are prepared for what is to come. In retrospect, we weren’t prepared for what was to come when we welcomed her as the newest Core Member in the summer of 2014 – meaning, we didn’t expect her to be creating so

many meaningful memories in such a short period of time!

Lola is a woman of various talents: her beautiful paintings of diverse styles boast her accomplishments as an artist; the fun necklaces and bracelets she wears are products of her own impressive skills in jewelry-making; and her love of dance is guaranteed to add liveliness in her home and the parties she attends.

As most of us would be, Lola was shy and quiet at fi rst when she was in the early stages of getting to know her new housemates, but Lola was quick to demonstrate her warm, friendly, and playful personality in her own way right from the beginning.

It didn’t take long for Lola to develop friendships in the community. Her acts of kindness and thoughtfulness are a joy to behold: she offers her hand out to Mike, one of the Core Members in her home, to communicate her presence with him; she often reminds Dan, an Assistant who lives with her, how she enjoyed bowling with him…at least six months ago; she surprises someone with a gift of her artwork to show her appreciation; and at community gatherings she makes sure she greets Janet and Madeleine, folks from other homes she spent summer holidays with. “My friends,” she refers to them.

We are thankful for Lola’s presence and the gifts that she shares. Seeing her fl ourish in community life has been a testament to the sense of belonging that L’Arche Toronto provides to individuals whose lives it touches.I entered L’Arche in my early 20’s, with little idea of what it meant to be a leader and no desire to step up to leadership. I entered L’Arche in my early 20’s, with little idea of what it meant to be a leader and no desire to step up to leadership. I could not have foreseen that the next two years would provide me with the opportunity for tremendous growth and help me discover my untapped potential as a leader. My greatest experience at L’Arche Toronto was the honour of being House Leader at a time when one of our core members was nearing the end of her life. How did I go from wanting nothing to do with leadership to being humbled by the opportunity to be a strong leader at such a diffi cult time? How did L’Arche Toronto produce such a dramatic change in my character?

L’Arche is a fertile environment primed for growth and strewn with people to help nurture and prune an individual’s path of development. Interacting with people who were honest about their limitations helped me gaze comfortably into the imperfection comfortably into the imperfection

How L’Arche Prepared Me as a LeaderBy Rachel Clements

how to take decisive action to get things done. On top of learning how to complete tasks in a timely manner, I recognized the effi ciency of proper organization. I even learned how to drive a L’Arche van through the narrow streets of downtown Toronto as I attempted to grocery shop for nine people! I started to accept myself. This radical acceptance is something that perhaps a lot of us lack, yet strive for, and once found, presents us with portraits of humble leadership.

L’Arche challenged my idea of conventional terms that I had previously associated with leadership; it wasn’t all about charisma, business or infl uence. L’Arche taught me about the nature of growth, the value of setting goals, and the importance of community support in achievement. I learned that in order to lead well, one must lead from a place of peace.

I learned the value of gentleness in addressing confl ict. I learned how to pray for and encourage my team, and that being a spiritual leader was also valuable. I learned how to invest in the growth of my team, how to provide them with the right resources, and how to show gratitude towards them, which evolved to include baking fresh brownies every Tuesday morning before our meetings.

I now spend my summers volunteering at a youth leadership camp. When confronted with questions from the teens about what to do after high school, my refl ex answer is always “Have you heard of L’Arche?” I cannot recommend it enough!

of my own existence and gradually accept my limitations. The members of my community lived with the understanding that we are all fl awed and in need of grace. Albeit a slow process, I stopped denying my faults; I learned to appreciate my strengths and sought to use them for the benefi t of the community.

This change was neither effortless nor uncomplicated. What supported my perseverance through steep learning curves was the support of the leadership team in my community. I can recall very few times in which I left a meeting with the Assistants Coordinator without a list of tangible goals in hand. I found the community to be intentional and devoted to the growth of Assistants and Core Members alike.

On a practical level, I learned various integral lessons such as effective time management; I abolished old procrastinating habits and learned

OUTREACH & COMMUNITY EVENTS

L’Arche Toronto exhibited at the Ability Awards, a national event that celebrates those who make a difference in the disability community. The event appropriately took place on December 3, the International Day of People with Disabilities.

One of the most signifi cant contributions that L’Arche Toronto makes to the community outside of our core programs is the transformative experience we provide to students through our High School Retreats.

With themes including community identity, belonging, confl ict resolution, compassion, ethics and eugenics, High School Retreats provide students with the opportunity to deepen the sense of community that they share with their classmates. Through play, introspection, discussion and art, students are afforded the space to explore their own individuality and to share openly with their peers. The retreats have been described as a time for “meeting and sharing.”

Lead by one of our Sol Express Facilitators and a Sol Express participant or Core Member, our retreats also educate students on the values of L’Arche. Students learn from people of all abilities. Our oldest core member, Mel, for example, often takes part in the retreat to share how he dedicated most of his working life to supporting those less fortunate than himself.

L’Arche Toronto’s High School Retreats continue to make an impact on today’s youth, providing them with the knowledge and understanding that is needed to make positive, inclusive choices and better prepare them to emerge amongst their peers as leaders.

In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is critical that social sector organizations work collaboratively with the education system to ensure that children and youth are given the opportunity to engage in values-based activities. L’Arche Toronto has been placing an increasing focus on educating tomorrow’s leaders on topics such as: diversity, belonging, philanthropy, and community.

In collaboration with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), The Angel Foundation for Learning, and Meagan’s Walk, L’Arche Toronto presented to over 1,000 students over three days as part of The Circling Our Angels of Hope student leadership initiative.

This training aims to build the capacity of Grade 6 students, and give them the tools needed to become better leaders. L’Arche Toronto shared with students how they can incorporate the values of L’Arche throughout their journey to becoming the future leaders of their home, school, and broader communities. L’Arche Toronto speakers (including Assistants and Core Members) shared the importance of valuing one another’s differences, and discussed ideas on how they can help create a world where everyone belongs, providing students with tangible take-aways on how to become champions of inclusion.

As we look forward to another year of living L’Arche, we hope that you will join us on our journey. There are so many exciting possibilities ahead of us. We strive to grow year after year along with the members of our community. As the needs of Core-Members change, we refl ect on how we as an organization continue to evolve and grow in order to meet their needs and encourage them to lead self-directed lives in community. We will work diligently over the next year (and beyond) to continue to grow our programs, improve our supports, and services, and offer a sense of belonging to all those whose lives are touched by L’Arche Toronto.

This year we will celebrate our founder, Jean Vanier, who will be awarded the Templeton Prize for his exceptional contributions to affi rming life’s spiritual dimension. He will join a distinguished group of 44 former recipients, including Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama. Jean Vanier has written and spoken tirelessly for more than 50 years, advocating for social justice and encouraging dialogue on embracing difference and what it means to be human. As we celebrate Jean, we are reminded of how he has for 50 years, continued to create positive change in our ever-evolving world. He has demonstrated a balance of fervor and patience, conviction and understanding that serves as a constant reminder of what it takes to create a world where everyone belongs.

We thank you for your continued support of L’Arche Toronto. Without the support of our donors, volunteers, community members, and partners, it wouldn’t be possible to continue to live L’Arche as Jean Vanier envisioned all those years ago as a place where people with and without disabilities come to learn, grow and share life together.

LOOKING FORWARD

Let’s create a world where everyone belongs.
