On behalf of the Tourism Promotion Organization for Asia Pacific Cities (TPO), it is my greatpleasure to invite you to the Korean Culture and Language Immersion Program: K-CLIP,which is to be held in Pusan National University and in the cities of Busan, Ulsan, Daegu,Gyeongju, and in Jeollabuk-do from the 13th to the 27th of July, 2014.

Student Travel Exchange Program has always been one of the most important projects forTPO. It was originally created with the purpose of cultivating young people, future leaders ofthe society and to give them an opportunity to visit TPO member cities. Such STEP events as“TPO Youth Multi-Media Culture Camp”, “Discover Asia in Korea”, “Tourism Universiade” hadgathered together hundreds of students from Asia Pacific Region over the few years.

This year’s TPO event offers two weeks of intensive language and cultural study, and travelin the summer. Students will take a Korean Language Course and several Korean CultureCourses. Each student will also have a chance to participate in special activities including,but not limited to Taekwondo - Korean traditional martial art, Samulnori - traditional musicalinstruments, Korean Cooking Class, etc.Travelling around the country is one of the most appealing parts of the program to students,who would like to make unforgettable memories during their summer vacation. The programis enriched with diverse trips, which will help students to explore and visit some of the mostincredible travel spots throughout the country.

We look forward to seeing you on campus of the beautiful Pusan National University andthe peaceful, yet dynamic, land of Morning Calm. We welcome and appreciate all theintellectual and creative energy you will bring with you!

II. Introduction of the Program1. Program Concept : “Let̀ s dive into Korean language and culture together!”K-CLIP-2014 is a two week program designed specifically for international students from AsiaPacific, interested in travel and learning new language and culture. This program allows students to obtainspecialized knowledge and skills and also contributes to the development and formation of youth networkand city tourism network in the Asia Pacific Region.

2. Goals

The program gives participants following advantages :

1) To provide special Korean language course available to all levels (beginners / intermediate / advanced)

2) To provide specialized education on Korean history and culture, traditional values and modern tendenciesthrough theory and practice

3) To provide an opportunity for participants to visit some of the best tourist attractions of the KoreanPeninsula

4) Building strong long-lasting international friendships among member cities and relevant organizationsthrough the exchange of students in the Asia Pacific Region.

VI. Culture Experiences

K-POPHallyu or "Korean wave” refers to the sudden increase in popularity ofSouth Korean culture around the world in the last ten years. Studentsof K-CLIP will discover or relieve their K-pop and K-culture addictionthrough K-pop experiences, like learning popular Korean songs, dancesand movies that will allow them to “surf the Korean Wave Hallyu”.

Hanji CaftsHanji is a traditional Korean Paper. Hanji Craft is an exciting chance tolearn some of the beautiful crafting techniques involved in the art andmake original souvenirs using the resilient yet flexible traditionalKorean paper.

SamulnoriSamulnori is actually named for the four percussive instruments used inperformances: a small gong, a larger gong, an hourglass-shaped drum,and a bass drum. These are the instruments of the ordinary folk and carrythe spirit of the Korean people. They can express both the sorrows andhappiness of the people as well as create the most amazing sounds.

TaekwondoMarital Art Taekwondo is one of Korea’s proudest sport traditions, agreat way to get in shape and learn a useful new skill. Highly-trainedmasters will help international students to experience the fun activityregardless of their skills.

Korean Cooking ClassIt is said that to get a better understanding of a country’s culture, youmust experience its food. Luckily, we have cooking class available tooffer participants a greater insight into Korean culture and learn thebasics of Korean cuisine.

Hanbok and tea ceremonyHanbok is a beautiful and colorful traditional clothing of Korean people,which nowadays is worn only on special occasions. Students will tryon traditional Korean costume; learn difference between the casualand wedding Hanbok, and sample traditional Korean teas while lis-tening to an explanation about them.

VII. Field TripsBusan Metropolitan CityBusan is a city of approximately 3.6 million residents, located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula.The natural environment of Busan is a perfect example of harmony between mountains, rivers and sea.Busan is the second largest city in Korea. The city's natural endowments and rich history have resulted inBusan's increasing reputation as a world class city of tourism and culture.

Yongdusan Park ➛ Jagalchi Fish Matket - Gukje (International) Market ➛Nurimaru APEC House ➛Gwangalli Beach and Diamond Bridge

Yongdusan Park is a space of relaxation in the downtown of Busan.Busan Tower, which is an icon of the city, is located in this park. The toweris especially famous for the beautiful and unique night view of the Busanharbor from the 120-meter-high observation deck.

Jagalchi is the largest seafood market in the Southeast region, whichsells the full range of the marine products, including fresh catches of fishand good quality dried fish at excellent prices. Jagalchi is full of warmth ofcharacter unique to Busan.

Gukje Market, the largest traditional market in Busan, is a place steepedin history. Gukje Market humbly began during the Korean War in 1950. Eventoday, the area is bursting with the old-fashioned marketplace spirit, similarto that of Namdaemun Market in Seoul. Shops in Gukje Market sell anassortment of various items that can be purchased at incredibly inexpensiveprices.

Nurimaru APEC House has been used as a memorial hall and aprestigious international conference hall since the APEC summit meeting.The venue of the APEC Summit Conference overlooks Haeundae Beachand the beautiful landscape around Gwangan Bridge. Its interior design isa visual display of Korea’s creative traditional culture.

Gwangalli Beach is 1.4 km long, 64m wide, and is famous for its finesand. The area has a cultural center, a museum, theaters for plays andmovies, an art gallery, TV station, etc. It is a popular gathering place foryoung people in their 20s and 30s. One of the landmarks of the Gwagallibeach and Busan city is a Diamond Bridge. At 7.42 kilometers from start tofinish it is the longest cross-sea bridge in Korea.

Daegu Metropolitan CityProud host of the IAAF World Championships in 2011, Daegu is the fourth largest after Seoul, Busan, andIncheon, and the third largest metropolitan area in the nation with over 2,5 million residents. Daegu ModernCulture Street Tour is one of the most popular tours in Daegu. Participants can experience the moderncultural aspects of Daegu through sightseeing of buildings constructed in the modern period, old housesof nationalist fighters and so on.

Dongsan Missionary houses ➛March 1st Manse Movement Road ➛Gyesan Catholic Church ➛ Former houses of Lee Sang Hwa (nationalist poet) and Seo Sang Don (independence fighter) ➛ Modern Culture Experience Center (Gyesan Yeaga) ➛Mulberry Alley ➛ Jeil Church ➛ Yangnyengsi Museum of Oriental Medicine ➛Great Yeongnam Road (Yeongnam Daero) ➛ Jin Alley ➛Daegu Overseas Chinese Association

Dongsan Missionary housesare located on Cheongna Hill. There are3 houses; Switzer Residence, Blair Residence, and Chamness Residencenamed after the missionaries who lived in them. The buildings and treesremain just as they were in the early 1900’s.

March 1st Manse Movement Road was a secret passage for crowdsof citizens and students who marched on the streets. They disguisedthemselves as merchants and met at Mr. Kang’s salt market through thispath. Visitors can view old scenes of the Gyesan Catholic Church and viewDaegu through photos exhibited on the wall.

Gyesan Catholic Church is famous for its history of over 100 years andit is one of the three major landmark churches in Korea. Many visitors dropby the Catholic Church simply to admire the Gothic architecture of the oldbuilding.

Jeil Church is the oldest Protestant Church in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.Initially established in 1898 over four tile-roofed houses, Daegu Jeil Church wasrebuilt in 1933 with traditional and Western architectural designs. Subsequently,Deacon Lee Ju-Yeol dedicated a 33m bell tower in 1937, while the churchunderwent an interior renovation in 1969, and an expansion in 1981.

Jin Alleymeans “long alley” by Daegu dialect. In this place, the magnificentKorean mansions of the millionaire Suh clan are well preserved up till today.The styles of the construction show combined flavors of Korean, Chinese,and Japanese architecture.

Ulsan Metropolitan CitySouth Korea's seventh largest metropolis with a population of over 1.1 million. It is located in the south-east ofthe country, neighboring Busan to the south and facing Gyeongju to the north. Ulsan is the industrialpowerhouse of South Korea, forming the heart of the Ulsan Industrial District, which is home to the world'slargest automobile assembly plant operated by the Hyundai Motor Company, the world's largest shipyardoperated by Hyundai Heavy Industriesand the world's third ,largest oil refinery, owned by SK Energy.

Hyundai Motors Factory ➛ Hyundai Heavy Industry Corporation➛ Taehwa River Park and Seepri Bamboo Grove ➛ Onggi Pottery Village and Pottery Museum

Hyundai Motors Factory is the main factory of Hyundai Motors completewith five independent factory facilities. With nearly 34 thousand employees,this factory produces 5,600 cars a day on average. Moreover, it is the largestfacility that represents the automotive industry of Korea, which also hasa superb eco-friendly environment.

Hyundai is a general heavy industry corporation which produces15% oftotal ship building of the world and has top ranking shipbuilding industry.Hyudai conducts sea and plant business such as digging oil and gas fromthe sea and plant business which produces other industrial facilities.

Ulsan has made tremendous strides in upgrading its public parks.Taewha River Park is quickly becoming one of the most popular. Theecological value of the river, flora and fauna is a nature lover's dream. Afour-kilometer bamboo grove stretches out along the Taehwa River. Thebamboo forest is about 290,000 square meters in area, providing lushgreenness to the otherwise.

Onggi Village is a top traditional folk (pottery) village in Korea andshowcases the conventional pottery manufacturing process. The villagewas established by artisans and potters from all over Korea to practice andpreserve the tradition of onggi craft. With pottery in every corner, visitorscan experience the peaceful atmosphere of an ancient village.

Gyeongju CityGyeoungju is the capital of the Silla Dynasty, which has so many things to explore that the whole city is oftenreferred to as a museum without walls. In terms of city or population size, Gyeongju is just a small city. Buthere, relics from the Silla Kingdom are scattered throughout the city resulting in multiple sites beingdesignated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage under the name of the Gyeongju Historic Areas.

Eupcheon Port “sound of the waves” trail ➛ King Munmu Royal Tomb ➛ Gameunsa Temple Site➛ Golgulsa Temple ➛ Seokguram ➛ Bulguksa Temple ➛ Donggun Palace and Wolji Pond night view

King Munmu Royal Tomb.d. 681, King Munmu was buried at sea just offthe coast of Yangbuk-myeon. Munmu, the first king of Unified Silla, instructedthat he should be buried there so that he could become a dragon and protectthe Silla coastline.

The east and the west pagodas of Gameunsaji (Gameunsa Temple Site) arestructurally identical and are designated as National Treasuer No. 112. Thesestone pagodas were made during the early years of the Unified Silla Kingdom. Thetwo 13.4 high pagodas are the highest three-story stone pagodas of the Silla Eraand are known for its symmetry.

Golgulsa Temple Located at the foot of Mt. Hamwol, Golgulsa is the onlytemple cave in Korea. The temple was built out of solid rock during the 6thcentury by Saint Gwang Yoo and some accompanying monks, and wasdesigned according to the architectural structure of India.

Seokguram, located on Tohamsan Mountain, is the representative stonetemple of Korea. The official name of Seokguram, National Treasure No. 24,is Seokguram Seokgul. Designated as World Cultural Heritage Site byUNESCO in 1995, it is an artificial stone temple made of granite.

Bulguksa Temple is the representative relic of Gyeongju and wasdesignated as a World Cultural Asset by UNESCO in 1995. The beauty of thetemple itself and the artistic touch of the stone relics are known throughoutthe world.

Donggun Palace and Wolji Pond. Donggung palace was built for theCrown Prince during King Munmu's reign to hold banquets to celebrate specialoccasions of the country. The pond itself extends to 190 meters in all 4directions.
