Visual Literacy• Visual literacy is defined as the ability to

understand and use images, including the ability to think, learn, and express oneself in terms of images (Braden, 1996)

• To discuss issues and perspectives concerning visual communication (including definition of VL), the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) was established in New York State in 1968.

ACE IT with PAT• ACE is the process of creating

instructional visuals– Analyze– Create (PAT)

• Perceptions (figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt)• Actions (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity)• Tools (type, shape, color, depth, space)

– Evaluate

PAT under “Create”• PAT is the model used to “create” visuals.

(see slide 12)• PAT stands for Perceptions, Actions, and

Tools– Perceptions include figure-ground, hierarchy,

24

A - Contrast

Make things different to catch your eyes

Page 25: Let’s Learn Visual Literacy

25

A - Repetition

Reusing same elements to make it look consistent

Page 26: Let’s Learn Visual Literacy

26

A - Alignment

Different types of alignments create different visual effects

Page 27: Let’s Learn Visual Literacy

27

A - Proximity

Moving things close together or far apart creates a different effect

ToolsTYPE (typography – different fonts)

COLOR (color does make a difference)

SPACE (separate elements)

SHAPE (line, arrow, circle, clip art…)

DEPTH (size, dimension, and texture)
