Letter From Dad

Dear family,A few weeks ago, Judge Amy

Coney Barrett was confirmed to theSupreme Court by the United StatesSenate. This was of particular inter-est because her judicial philosophyis based upon “Originalism”, not “Ju-dicial Activism”.

I am not a constitutional ex-pert and this subject is very com-plex. However, even with limitedunderstanding of these two judicialphilosophies, most people can rec-ognize the fundamental distinctions.

With “Originalism” a judgeinterprets the Constitution as origi-nally written. This is also known as“original intent” and is based uponwhat any reasonable person wouldhave understood, at the time it waswritten. These judges believe theAmerican Constitution is an an-chor that provides our nation withstability and continuity; an anchor,not to be capriciously cut loose byfuture generations—especially after240 years of unprecedented free-dom and prosperity.

An “activist” judge does notinterpret the Constitution as originallywritten. Activist judges subscribe toa “living” document that evolvesover time, adjusting for social good,situational ethics and public opinion.

In other words, with judicial ac-tivism the Constitution is not ananchor. It can be pulled from its’moorings at any time.

There are times whenchanges are needed in our Constitu-tion (i.e. 27 amendments); but it isthe responsibility of Congress, notthe Judiciary. This was defined asSeparation of Powers by ourFounding Fathers. When “activist”judges reinterpret established law al-ready passed by Congress, it is called“legislating from the bench”.

Two of the most consequen-tial examples of “legislating from thebench” by the Supreme Court, arethe constitutional right to have anabortion (1973), and the constitu-tional right to same-sex marriage(2015). Through broad interpreta-tion of the 14th amendment, the Su-preme Court totally rejected the con-cept of “original intent”, and simplypassed new law. This is “judicialactivism” at its best!!

For people of faith, these tworulings have serious moral implica-tions. But, with “judicial activ-ism” there is no “moral intent”!!The philosophy is secular in na-ture. Situational ethics supplantsmorality. Judge Barrett’s confirma-tion to the Supreme Court incensedSenate Democrats because she istrue to her Catholic faith. They arefearful she believes “moral intent” isinherent within the judicial conceptof “Originalism”, and she will incor-porate “moral intent” in her deci-

sions. Two years ago, Senate Demo-crats maliciously discredited Su-preme Court nominee BrettKavanaugh for the same reason. Hetoo is a devout Catholic who will besensitive to moral implications in hisjudicial rulings. As an American andas a Christian, I believe both Judgesare on solid ground.

The Constitution of the UnitedStates, literally codifies the core val-ues upon which this country stands(Read it!!). In addition, numerous

other writings by our Founding Fa-thers further substantiates that“moral intent” is inherent in our Con-stitution.

John Adams stated, “OurConstitution was made only fora moral and religious people. Itis wholly inadequate to the gov-ernment of any other”. JamesMadison added, “A good con-science is the most sacred of allproperty”. The Father of our na-tion, George Washington reaf-firmed, “It is substantially truethat virtue or morality is a nec-essary spring of popular govern-ment”. Patrick Henry, with fire

always in his bones stated, “A vi-tiated (impure) state of morals,a corrupted public conscience,is incompatible with freedom”.And finally, the very first ChiefJustice of the Supreme Court JohnJay stated, “The Bible is the bestof all books, for it is the word ofGod and teaches us the way tobe happy——”.

The U.S. Constitution pro-tects all citizens under the law. Italso seems quite clear the “origi-

nal intent” of our Founders wasto protect a way of life,grounded in moral principles.Morality is the source of Ameri-can exceptionalism. It is living byGod’s law— regardless of specificfaith—that has been the source ofAmerica’s freedom and strength.It is the rejection of God and in-creasing moral decadence in ourcountry that will bring our nationto her knees.

The intense hatred displayedby Senate Democrats during theBarrett and Kavanagh hearings,amplifies a much larger assault thatGod-fearing people of all faiths are

facing every day. It is a disturbingreality that must bring all of the faith-ful together. Thomas Payne, anotherFounding Father, bluntly wrote inhis classic book Common Sense,“He that will promote discord,under a government so equallyformed as this, would have joinedLucifer in his revolt.” The time hascome for every American to choose,on which side of the line they wishto reside. Do not allow ignorancenor apathy to decide for you.

This Thanksgiving, I am grate-ful Amy Coney Barrett is our newjustice on the Supreme Court. I amgrateful there were enough God-fear-ing Senators to confirm her. I amgrateful we still have leadership inthis country that is morally drivenand I pray that more good men andwomen will step forward to lead ata time when our nation desperatelyneeds them.

I am especially grateful forthe silent moral majority who go towork every day, raise their kids, helptheir neighbors in need and still goto church on Sunday. And I am es-pecially grateful for the deceasedSupreme Court Justice AntoninScalia, who before his death re-minded and inspired all believers,“God assumed from the beginningthat the wise of the world wouldview Christians as fools, and Hehas not been disappointed……have the courage to know yourwisdom will be regarded as stu-pidity— be fools for Christ. Andhave the courage to suffer the con-tempt of the sophisticated world”.

This will be a great Thanks-giving!!! God bless America!!!

If you suffer from headaches,you may have been suffering foryears. There are different types ofheadaches, which means that thereare different treatment options foreach type of headache. It is impor-tant that you visit your health careprovider to determine what type ofheadaches you may be experienc-ing.

One type of headache that isgenerally undertreated or not diag-nosed is a cervicogenic headache.This type of headache is actuallycaused by the neck. They usuallyaffect one side and spread from thebase of the neck to the temple andeye areas of the head. Commonsymptoms include a steady, non-throbbing pain at the neck or baseof the skull, sometimes extendingdown between the shoulder blades.Because of the location, most of thepain is felt in the head, even thoughthe problem is originating from thespine. Headaches And Neck Painnausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurredvision, becoming very sensitive tolight or sounds and feeling pain downone or both arms. The neck can alsobecome stiff, causing difficulty withneck movement.

A cervicogenic headache gen-erally comes and goes, but thenprogresses to an almost continuouspain. Of course, any stress to theneck and spine, poor posture, ex-cessive physical activity, and evenpositioning can trigger the symptoms.

Pain usually starts after a suddenneck movement, such as a sneeze.If you already know that you havedisc problems in your spine, yourrisk for Cervicogenic headaches in-creases. Your provider may orderx-rays, a CT or MRI of the cervicalspine (neck), and perhaps nervetesting to help diagnose your pain.In some cases, a neurologist maybe consulted.

Because headaches can bedifficult to diagnose, it is importantto keep a headache diary. A head-ache diary should include 1) Head-ache severity on a scale from 0-10(zero being no pain) morning, after-noon, and evening 2) Headache du-ration 3) Headache symptoms, 4)Medication use, including over-thecounter medications), and 5) Trig-gers which may be causing or ag-gravating the symptoms (foods, cer-tain activities, etc.). You can sharethis information with your health careprovider, already armed with spe-cific information that will help themwith your diagnosis.

Treatment includes stopping“offending” foods or activities, us-ing over-the-counter medication,

adding other types of medications,nerve blocks or epidural injections,and even chiropractic. As always,continue or start a healthy diet, getenough sleep, and “de-cluttering”stressors in your life. Visit with your

Bad TimingA parish priest, Father

O’Brien, was being honoredat a dinner on the 25th anni-versary of his arrival in thatparish. A leading local politi-cian, who was a member ofthe congregation, was chosento make the presentation andgive a little speech at the din-ner, but he was delayed intraffic. Sooo.. . . .FatherO’Brien decides to say hisown few words while theyawait the politician’s ar-

rival...... “You will under-stand,” he said, “the seal ofthe confessional, can neverbe broken. What is confessedin there to me is never re-peated on the outside. How-ever, I got my first impres-sions of this parish from thefirst confession I ever heardhere. Realize, please, that Ican only hint vaguely aboutthis, but when I came here25 years ago, I thought I hadbeen assigned to a terribleplace. The very first chapwho entered my confessionaltold me how he had stolen atelevision set and, whenstopped by the police, hadalmost murdered the officer.Further, he told me he hadembezzled money from hisplace of business and had anaffair with his boss’s wife. Iwas appalled. But as thedays went on I knew that mypeople at this congregationwere not all like that, and Ihad, indeed come to, a fineparish full of understandingand loving people.” Just asthe priest finished his talk,the politician arrived, apolo-gized for his tardiness andthen started in on his speech.“I want to thank you all forletting me say a few wordsthis evening in honor of Fa-ther O’Brien. 25 Years is along time. In fact, when hearrived here, I had the honorof being the first confessionhe heard at this congrega-tion.”

Now that is bad timing.

She was born in Lexington,Virginia in 1824, the daughter ofa famed Senator, renowned ora-tor, and champion of “the greatexpansion” to conquer the landsfrom the Atlantic Ocean to thePacific – Thomas Hart Benton.She grew to share his dream ofa nation stretching from coast tocoast, thus she became well edu-cated in the ways of social struc-ture, politics, history, literatureand languages.

In 1840, while studyingand living at Georgetown Semi-nary, she met explorer andarmy officer John C. Fremont.He was reporting to the gov-ernment on explorations he hadmade from the Missouri Riverto the northern frontier ofAmerica. They found in eachother dynamic common inter-ests and became engaged, buther father refused to allow herto marry until she became ofage. So, Fremont venturedagain westward to explore theDes Moines River and thewestern frontier. When he re-turned, they were married in1841.

But both Fremont and hisnew bride couldn’t be confinedto regular army bases, and hewas soon assigned the task ofexploring the West and scoutingland for future U.S. expansion.It was here that Fremont rose tofame and became known as“The Pathfinder to the West.”It was a take-off on James

After having help conquer

California from the Mexicangovernment, he served as thethird Military Governor of theTerritory. This propelled him toadvocate a strong anti-slaveryposition and to be chosen as thefirst-ever Republican candidatefor President in 1856. He wouldhave won had he carried Cali-fornia and Pennsylvania, but hisfather-in-law failed to supporthim. He lost to JamesBuchanan, but he continued tocall Jessie “the first lady,” andthe term continue with her closefriends throughout the rest of herlife.

The Fremont familymoved back to California, butlost a fortune in the 1873 panic– having invested heavily in rail-road stock. Undaunted, Jessiebegan writing books to help sup-port the family. This includedfour books about John’s adven-

tures and her exploits with him.From 1878 to 1881, John

C. Fremont served as Governorof the Territory of Arizona. Allthis while, Jessie was writing

popular magazine articlesabout his adventures anddiscoveries of the West,and continued to defendhis record and reputation.But only three months af-ter resigning from theArmy with a small pen-sion, he died in 1890 in a

hotel in New York City. Whenhe died, Jessie was 66 yearsold and they had been marriedfor 48 years. “Time will vin-dicate General Fremont,” shewrote, “his name can never beerased from the most colorfulchapters of American history.From the ashes of his camp-fires, cities have sprung.”

Jessie continued to writeand be active in civic affairs inLos Angeles. She moved intoa home presented to her in1891 by a committee of ladiesof the City as a token of theirgreat regard. She died in De-cember, 1902, and a beautifulbouquet of roses were sent byMrs. James A. Garfield, theactual first lady.

Every year we bake thiswonderful turkey centerpieceand use it as our bread, rollsor as a garnish tray packedwith carrots, celery, pearl on-ions, etc. And, each year I getfolks e-mailing or calling merequesting the recipe andsculpting instructions. So forall of you who have requestedthis…have fun creating thiswonderful thanksgiving nov-elty.

In 1621 the Pilgrimsjoined together with the NativeAmericans celebrating the Pil-grims very first harvest. Again,in October of 1863 the peoplewere reminded of the harvestand their blessings by AbrahamLincoln’s Thanksgiving Proc-lamation citing “the year thatis drawing towards its close,has been filled with blessingsof fruitful fields and healthfulskies. To these bounties, whichare so constantly enjoyed thatwe are prone to forget thesource from which they come,others have been added, whichare of so extraordinary a na-ture, that they cannot fail topenetrate and soften even theheart which is habitually insen-sible to the ever watchfulprovidence of Almighty God”.Even with all the troubles ofthe world and the difficultiesso many suffer, I can’t helpthink we all have something tobe thankful for. On a lighternote, I’d like to share a few

As for myself, I am grate-ful for many things includingthe opportunity to share withall the Sampler’s readers someof my family’s favorite recipes.Today’s article is not so muchabout a recipe as about sculpt-ing. As you all know, one ofmy favorite items to work withis “bread dough”. Over theyears, I have come up withsome fun and interestingeditable centerpieces but thisturkey has got to be the best.I can’t tell you how excited allthe family and guests becomewhen they see this BIRD sit-

ting in the middle of the din-ner table. Bread sculpting isfun to do and ever so easy.You just have to rememberthat what you form for yourfinal sculpture comes outdouble the size!

Bev’s Editable TurkeyCenterpiece

One recipe of your favor-ite white bread or one loaf offrozen “bake and serve”dough.

Divide dough in half.Make one ball with one halfof the dough and pat it downso that it is about 2-3 inchesin height and approximately6 inches round. Place it ona large cookie sheet whichhas been lined in parchmentpaper. Cut the other pieceof dough into 8 equal pieces.For the tail feathers, roll eachpiece of dough into a cylin-der shape, pressing it downfairly flat and making one endcome to a point. Attach eachfeather to the body by dip-ping your fingers in a littlewarm water and placing largerend on the body where feath-ers will attach. (The feath-ers actually lie flat and arejust pressed up against the

body). Make a round ballwith the 7th piece of doughand place it where the headshould attach, pressing it upagainst the body of the tur-key with a little water rubbedon the dough. Cut the lastpiece of dough in half. Makea square, flat piece of doughfor the feet and attach ac-cordingly. For the little reddangly thing, it’s called thewattle, roll the dough into arope shape and form it fromthe bottom of the head of theturkey down along the body.Place a clean cloth over thedough and let it rise untildouble in bulk. Five minutesbefore you are ready to baketurkey, heat oven to 350-375degrees. Beat one egg whiteand 1 tablespoon water to-gether until mixed. Using abasting brush, cover the body,head and feet of the turkeywith egg wash. Now add alittle red food coloring to youregg wash and using a bastingbrush, cover the feathers andwattle. Use a cranberry or rai-sin for the eye pressing it intothe surface of the dough. Bakefor 25-30 minutes untilbrowned and center of body isbaked through. Have FUN!

Standing by theend of their beds, the sergeant walkedfrom one end of the room to theother brightening the place with hiscolorful language, and finding at leasta hundred and one things wrong,instructing the men on how to cor-rect each issue. Two quotes that come tomind are “Who you gonna be-lieve?” and “It ain’t over ‘til it’sover.” At the date of this writing,the country is in turmoil over whothe president will be for the nextterm and which party will controlthe Senate because of two con-tested races in Georgia. The me-dia has declared that Biden willbe president, but many peoplehave ceased to believe in the in-tegrity of the media because offairly obvious bias towards a moreliberal mindset. It is also impor-tant to note that the media doesnot decide who is president. Thatresponsibility is in the hands of theelectoral college and the House ofRepresentatives.

The remaining content ofthis article is my effort to clear theair about what is legally possiblemoving forward along with someof my opinions. I add to it thisdisclaimer. I voted for a third-party presidential team because Idon’t really like either of the op-tions from the major parties. If Ionly had those two choices, Iwould have had to vote againstBiden/Harris rather than forTrump/Pence because I believesocialism would be the downfallof our country and our freedoms.That said, here are the legal issues.

All of us should be able tohave reasonable confidence in ourvotes being counted if we meetthe legal requirements and vote inaccordance with existing law.States should be required to en-force the law and not make upnew ones during the process of

the voting taking place. We shouldalso be able to have confidencethat those who cannot vote legallyor vote fraudulently by claimingto be someone they are not shouldbe prosecuted to the full extent ofthe law since their illegal votescould cancel out my legal vote.Some fraud exists in most largeelections and even some on thelocal level. It should never be tol-erated. Any attempt by media,politicians or commentators suchas actors, musicians and businesspeople to stop enforcement effortsshould be roundly criticized andcondemned. We must have con-fidence that the will of the peopleis heard.

If there is suspicion thatfraud has occurred, it is totally jus-tified for parties to ask for investi-gation including intervention bythe courts. If fraud is confirmedand if that fraud is shown to havelikely affected the vote totalsenough to cast the election in thatstate into doubt, legal remediessuch as revotes could be ordered.It has happened before. Both par-ties have sought for court inter-vention in elections before this oneand it is disingenuous for either ofthem to claim that the other are“sore losers” just because they askto get it right.

If some of the states cannotcertify the outcome of the presiden-tial race in their state by December8th, it could drastically alter the presi-dential race. This could happen be-cause of court challenges or simpledelays in counting the votes in somestates but it is unlikely because, whilestate and district courts often get in-volved, the Supreme Court usuallyprefers to not get involved in deci-sions concerning the executivebranch. Because some states maynot be able to determine and send

the votes of their electors to the Sen-ate by the 9th of December, it couldmean the Electoral College will notbe able to cast a majority of votes forone or the other. If that happens, theHouse of Representatives immedi-ately takes over the decision of choos-ing the next president. Each state willhave one vote rather than all mem-bers of the House voting. Thischanges the dynamic radically be-cause the Democrats have a major-ity of members in the House, but themajority of the state delegations areRepublican. It is likely that, if the elec-tion moves to the House of Repre-sentatives, Donald Trump will likelybe elected. That possibility is themain reason why the Republicansseek to question the outcome in allthe closely contested states. If eventwo or three cannot certify theirchoice for president before thedeadline, the decision by the Housebecomes very likely.

Some will say that this is un-fair and some may even rebel orbecome violent. We hope that thiswill not be so, but there are groupsthat joy in the division and destruc-tion of our lives, businesses and ourcountry. The reality is that if thereis contention about the rules of thegame, the referees go back to therule book. Just as in a football orbaseball game, referring to the writ-ten and established rules is how youkeep order and decide conflicts. Inthis case, the rulebook is the U.S.Constitution. I am glad it is so andhope all Americans will choose touphold it and the principles it clearlystates.
