Letter from the Director

Dear Students and Parents:

This truly is an exciting time to become a member of the Port Allen High School Band program. You are now a member of one of the finest organizations in Louisiana, one of the largest organizations at Port Allen High School, and the undefeated LMBC Class A State Champion Marching Band!

The Port Allen High School “Band of Blue” Marching Band has performed for thousands of people throughout the state and country, both in live performances and even on television. You are now a part of a rich tradition that will positively influence you as it has done for many other Port Allen High School students.

As a part of this great tradition, you will have many responsibilities and obligations to meet and uphold. You will be expected to attend ALL rehearsals and performances, practice individually, and conduct yourself in an appropriate manner both inside and outside of the band room. Most of all, you will be constantly encouraged to strive for excellence in everything you do. “Be Your Best” should be our motto.

You will find a cross section of the school in our band. We have athletes, scholars, and socialites. We have student leaders in virtually every club and activity in the school. Valedictorians, Salutatorians and Honor Students are commonplace, rather than the exception in our band. While not every member will go on to be a college musician or performer, we consistently have graduates who attend college on some kind of music-related scholarship.

Most of the simple regulations and information contained in these pages have been established for sometime and have proven to be successful techniques for maintaining a high degree of excellence in a band program. While it is not possible to cover every circumstance, which may arise over the course of a school year with an appropriate rule, policy or response, this handbook will furnish everyone with a working knowledge of what is expected in most situations as a member of the Port Allen High School Band program.

At the end of the handbook you will find a parent/student contract and media consent form. Both must be read, signed by BOTH student and parent(s), and returned by band camp.

We are looking forward to another successful year with The Band of Blue!

The positive support and hard work of the students and parents are vital to this success and are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Paul FosterPaul Foster,Band Director

PORT ALLEN HIGH SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM - STATEMENT OF LONG-TERM GOALSThe band program at PAHS strives to provide a rich and rewarding musical experience for all of its students. The program is guided by the following four principles:

I. The band program should continually challenge students to demonstrate a high level of achievement in musical performance both individually and as a member of a group. A program dedicated to high achievement is characterized by:

specific performance goals that are clearly communicated to the students. a sequential curriculum which results in student achievement of progressively more advanced

skills. a curriculum which exposes students to a wide variety of musical styles and performance formats. a curriculum which incorporates an understanding of basic theory and mechanics of music. a musical experience which provides students opportunities to achieve positions of leadership and

responsibility. a willingness to measure achievement through participation in a variety of adjudicated festivals

and competitions. a commitment to providing opportunities for accessible private study.

II. The students in the program should receive school and community recognition for their musical efforts and achievements. A program which fosters recognition of the musical efforts and achievements of it's members is characterized by:

members who exhibit a high level of respect for and pride in the efforts and successes of the band. parents who demonstrate active support for the musical responsibilities and activities of their

students. leadership which serves as an active advocate for the band and its members. a high degree of visibility and positive interaction within the school and community.

III. The band program should foster and expect a high level of dedication from its members. A program whose members are highly dedicated is characterized by:

leadership which promotes dedication among band members of all grade levels. students who strive to achieve both their personal musical potential and that of the band through

regular practice. students who honor their commitment to their fellow members by attending all band activities. parents who encourage and facilitate their students participation in all of the band's activities.

IV. The band program should result in students feeling a sense of achievement and satisfaction due to their participation in band. A program with high levels of student satisfaction is characterized by members who:

identify strongly with the group, and derive feelings of pride, friendship, heightened self-esteem, and belonging from their association with it.

believe they are making a positive contribution to the tradition of the program. demonstrate their enthusiasm for the program and their membership in it. work in an atmosphere of respect for and between teachers and students.

ENSEMBLES OFFERED AT PORT ALLEN

Auxiliary GroupsPort Allen Marching Band This band is led by Mr. Foster with aid from staff members Mr. Powell, Mr. Steel, and Ms. Triche. The Marching Band, The Band of Blue, is the most active and visible part of the Port Allen High School band program. It includes wind instruments, percussion and guard. This group participates at Home and Away Port Allen High Football games, in community events such as the Port Allen Veterans Day Program, and Relay for Life, as well as Parades during the Mardi Gras season where we fundraise a large portion of our funds.

Fall Color GuardThis group is overseen by Mr. Foster and is led by Ms. Triche. It is an integral part of the band. Membership in the Guard is determined by audition. The Guard is an exceptional group and is known throughout the state for its excellence. The Color Guard is THE visual ensemble associated with the Port Allen High School Band program. The Color Guard requires participation in after school and special rehearsals as well as all activities associated with the marching band.

Port Allen HS Concert BandThis ensemble is led by Mr. Foster with aid from Mr. Powell and the various other staff at hand. The Concert Band functions as a band that enables students to develop higher levels of musicianship on their instrument. This ensemble will stress the basics as well as work on appropriate levels of literature. Definite afternoon/evening rehearsals are to be expected closer to Concert Festival season (late-February to Mid-March), however the majority of this ensembles instruction happen during class time. This ensembles “busy” season will be from the beginning of January to the middle of March. It is especially required of all members to attend all rehearsals and the Pre-festival and Festival concerts of assessment. This is of the utmost importance due to its implication of our programs grade as a whole. You may be asked to switch to a different yet similar instrument as per the bands needs and the director’s discretion.

Auxiliary Groups

Port Allen HS Jazz BandThis ensemble is overseen by Mr. Foster lead by Mr. Guyton. Anyone who plays trumpet, saxophone, trombone, percussion, bass, piano, or guitar is eligible for membership in this band providing they meet the minimum playing requirements (this includes those members that may play a different instrument in Marching and/or Concert band). You must be a member of the Marching Band in the fall, Concert Band in the spring, and enrolled in the class to join. Membership in this ensemble MAY require an audition. The Jazz Ensemble meets after school and performs in the surrounding community as well as festivals and competitions. You may be asked to switch to a different yet similar instrument as per the bands needs and the directors discretion. Basketball DrumlineThis ensemble is overseen by Mr. Foster and is directed by Drumline Leadership. It plays at all Home District Basketball Games at Port Allen High. The season starts late-January and ends Late-February. All members of the Marching Band Drumline are required to attend all spring Home District Basketball games for the Port Allen High Basketball Team. Those band members whom perform wind instruments are encouraged to join by audition and are allowed to miss no more than 2 required games. Play-offs may be added to end of season.

Winter Guard The winter guard is overseen by Mr. Foster and is led by Ms. Triche. It has quickly become a LMCGPC fan and student favorite. This team involves a great amount of time as well as fees/uniforms/etc., but offers a tremendously valuable experience to the students involved. Most of the rehearsal and preparation time for this type of ensemble will take place during after-school/weekend hours. The performance schedule is posted usually in early January, if not sooner, and will involve several local venue competitions. The Winter Guard will have auditions immediately following the Marching Band Season in November and will end the first weekend of April. Instrumentalists whom wish to join must be a member of the Marching Band in the fall, Concert Band in the spring, and enrolled in the class to join. (Marching Band Color Guard members do not apply)*Indoor Unit Attendance – This is a performing group, whose purpose is educational, but whose success is also dependent on the amount, quality and full attendance of rehearsals/performances. Students who wish to be involved in this group will be expected to make arrangements to be at every rehearsal on time, and without fail. Extenuating circumstances do exist, but are rare, and if they can be worked out, they must be! ALL excuses should be brought to the director, Amy Triche, BEFOREHAND, if an absence can be foreseen. It will be the ultimate judgment of the Director of Bands if this absence will be excused. Unexcused absence(s) could result in the dismissal of the student from the ensemble in question. In order for this group to remain classified as one of the best in the state, the staff/directors cannot be tolerant of students or parents who make excuses for performing group members to miss or be tardy to rehearsals/performance.

REQUIREMENTS These requirements are meant to ensure the quality of the Band of Blue as whole program and are designed to maintain the band culture.

Members must participate for a full school year, which extends from band camp to the last day of school.

PAHS Members must be enrolled in the Marching Band/Advanced Band class and participate in the Marching Band, and Concert Band in both the Fall and Spring Semesters to be considered for the Auxiliary ensembles in their respective seasons. (Color Guard members in the fall of the Marching Band must be members of either the Winter Guard or the Concert Band during the spring semester). If a student fails to fulfill this requirement they lose their right to letter, put in jeopardy their right in next year or the next semester band, and may be subject to immediate dismissal.

If students wish to perform in the Jazz band, Basketball Drumline, and/or Winter Guard, they must meet the previous bullets requirements.

Members whom are not a part of sports programs during the same time as auxiliary groups may participate in as many auxiliary groups as they like at the same time.

Members whom are a part of a sports program during the same time as an auxiliary group may not participate in more than 2 auxiliary groups simultaneously while their seasons coincide. (This is to ensure the Band Member has time for schoolwork and other extracurricular activities). Exceptions may apply

6 | P a g e

Page 7: Letter from the Director - …portallenhighschoolband.weebly.com/.../9/...hand_book… · Web viewAs a part of this great tradition, you will have many responsibilities and obligations

Members must attend all rehearsals and performances for the groups they are involved in, and priorities these rehearsals in order of importance: Fall; Marching Band, and Jazz Band. Spring; Concert Band, Winter Guard, Jazz Band and Basketball Drumline.

Members must attend band camp in its entirety. Exceptions may apply.

Members must pay a $50.00 activity fee before their first day of Band Camp and pay for all other equipment and participate in fundraisers.

Members must maintain a school mandated GPA for extracurricular activities.

Members must treat everyone with respect and act responsibly at all times.

CONFLICTS WITH BAND

The Band Department fully supports band members being involved in school sports/activities. Fostering the development of well-rounded young people is one of our goals at Port Allen High School. Being involved in multiple activities may seem stressful at times, but most conflicts can be resolved through advance communication and a little extra effort. In some cases parents may need to provide transportation for their student to or from an event to help our compromise be effective.

It is your responsibility to keep in constant communication with Mr. Foster and your coach/sponsor about all schedule concerns. A schedule showing how you are going to split time should be provided to Mr. Foster and your coach/sponsor after it has been approved. You should never feel that you are in the middle and being pulled both ways, please let us know if you do.

Our general policy is:

When a band rehearsal and sports practice overlap- the student should split time equally, unless the band is having an eminent performance.

When a sports practice overlaps with a band performance - the student should attend the band performance.

When a band practice overlaps with a game or performance – the student should attend the game or performance.

When a band performance and sports game overlap- the student should attend the band event (unless permission is given by the director to miss).

Students are reminded that band is a very demanding activity and that if involvement in outside activities consistently conflict with the band schedule students should not dedicate themselves to band.

Work is not considered an excuse to miss a band event.

Parents and students please realize that when joining a performing group you are making a commitment to all of the other members. When you back out of your commitment (i.e. fail to attend rehearsal and/or performances) you are not only affecting the quality of the band, but you are letting down your fellow members and friends.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD ATTITUDE AND DISCIPLINE

The greatest single factor that will determine the success of any individual or organization is attitude. The kind of person that you are is an individual choice and how we feel about something, which involves attitude, is one of the few actual independent choices that we have in life. It takes intense dedication to reach goals. Students should learn to discipline themselves to daily practice on fundamentals. The “right attitude” must be present along with sincerity, concentration, and dedication as the basic foundation. Such an attitude makes an artistic performance inevitable and is the difference between a winning organization and a mediocre group. If there are conflicts, find a way to resolve them. Never insult another band Member’s integrity. The word “band” means that we are banded together and that there is no separation. The “Band of Blue” is not a band, not a color guard, or not a drum line. WE ARE A UNIT! WE ARE ONE! All information in this handbook APPLIES TO ALL MEMBERS OF EVERY SECTION OF THE UNIT. When something is section specific (colorguard, drumline, etc.) it will be noted. Because of the nature of the

7 | P a g e

Page 8: Letter from the Director - …portallenhighschoolband.weebly.com/.../9/...hand_book… · Web viewAs a part of this great tradition, you will have many responsibilities and obligations

organization, band discipline must be strict! Band students and parents must believe in the ideals, principles, and philosophy of the organization. Each member must always be aware of good behavior and think for himself or herself.

DISMISSAL

Any misconduct casts a bad light on the school, community, and band program. Any member who casts discredit to the organization by his/her conduct or actions in band, in another class, or on a trip, shall be subject to dismissal from the band program, or may lose privileges within the program. Disciplinary decisions will be at the director’s discretion.

No student will be denied the initial opportunity to study music at Port Allen High School. However, those who do not follow the rules and policies of the performing groups are subject to removal from those groups. It is the discretion of the director(s) as to which class or group a student is enrolled in, and it is at the discretion of the director(s) as to whether they will remain in that group – the director(s) will decide who is allowed to participate.

BAND CLASS REQUIREMENT

Instrumental music classes are considered co-curricular. Portions of the class requirements are completed outside the regular school day. In as much as these classes are demonstrative through rehearsal/concert performances, it is a given that these rehearsals and performances are mandatory for successful completion of any band course requirements.

All horn players and percussionist must be enrolled in one of the band classes, unless there is a direct conflict with a graduation or TOPS requirement. All conflicts should be brought to the director’s attention. Also, all band members must participate in Marching Band in the Fall and Concert Band in the Spring. Those not physically capable of actually marching will be given duties that they can handle.

CLASSROOM CONDUCT

Please be in the band room by the time the bell rings. You will have 10 minutes to get your equipment together and get to your seat and START PLAYING. We understand that you are coming from other classes and you would like to talk to your friends, but we have a very limited amount of time to get our job done. Any instrumental that fails to do so will be docked in their grade.

Please have your horn warmed up before the start of rehearsal. In order for our group warm-up to be affective we need to prepare individually. This means that every instrumentalist is required to warm-up their horn before rehearsal starts. Any instrumentalist that fails to do so will be docked in their grade.

Once the rehearsal begins, all talking is to cease. Once again we have very little time to get a lot done. If you do not follow this rule you will be asked to do wall or push-ups and if you fail to do that then you will be asked to leave, no questions asked!

Always have a pencil ready to take notes on your music. There will be random pencil and music checks for grades throughout the year. A pencil is very important to have so you can mark musical changes on your parts. Please bring one everyday, no matter what ensemble you are in.

Give 110% for the whole rehearsal. There is nothing more frustrating than telling the band to fix something and then to continue to hear that mistake the rest of rehearsal, or worse, in the performance. Listen actively to everything being said, and give it your best shot every time. Remember we cannot fix what we do not hear. Play your part to the best of your ability. If you give 110% every time we guarantee you will be successful in whatever you do!

Keep all personal items in your locker during class. All CELL PHONES MUST STAY IN INSTRUMENT ROOM DURING REHEARSAL. We do not want to hear cell phones going off or see anyone doing homework from other classes. Also, all cases are to stay in the instrument room. Do not bring your cases into the band room or put them under you chair.

Please stay in your seat until dismissed. I am sure you have heard this in other classes; the bell does not release you I do. Well the same goes for us. If we are in the middle of a musical phrase and we see and hear horns being taken apart it is very

8 | P a g e

Page 9: Letter from the Director - …portallenhighschoolband.weebly.com/.../9/...hand_book… · Web viewAs a part of this great tradition, you will have many responsibilities and obligations

distracting and rude. After rehearsal everyone is expected to put up their chair and stand and help set-up the band room for the next class.

If you follow these rules then our rehearsal will work great. Remember that continuous breaking of these rules may result in a lowered grade and possibly dismissal from the band.

USE OF BAND FACILITIES

No student is allowed in the band room without a director or administrator. Mr. Foster has duty on preassigned days and he will communicate to band members when that is so. Make sure not to leave personal belonging, or food in the band room on these day. It is your Responsibility to adhere to this rule as to not have your things locked inside.

YOU MAY NOT EVER CHEW GUM IN ANY MUSIC ROOM. SPIT IT OUT WHEN YOU ENTER THE ROOM.

It should go without saying, but never write, mark or scratch on any of the walls, floors, doors, chairs, stands, instruments or cases. Do not write on the chalk boards without permission. Do not post anything on the bulletin boards, walls or doors without permission and do not write or mark on anything that has been posted.

Please do not throw objects at the roof.

Do not leave anything lying around or it will be thrown away. Please store things in their proper place and take all personal items with you.

The PAHS band room is a place to practice, rehearse, and make music. The use of band facilities before, after, and during school is a privilege. Students who abuse the facility will be disciplined accordingly. Any abuse or damage will be considered vandalism.

No outside students are permitted in the band room, except for business with the director. Your friends are not welcome to disrupt rehearsal no matter how important they or you think it is so please take care of your personal business with them outside of rehearsal.

There will be no horseplay, e.g., throwing things in or around the band room.

All percussion and guard equipment is off limits to anyone not specifically designated to use them.

Band Office, Storage Rooms and Music Library

The library is private and is to be used only by the staff. Materials may be checked out through the staff; this includes solos, ensemble pieces, and etude books.

The office is an open space only when the Band Director is present.

All storage rooms are off limits unless you are given permission to be there.

CELL PHONE USECell phones are a great invention, and we will even often encourage students bring their phones on away trips to aid in calling home as we near the school on our return trip home… HOWEVER, cell phones WILL be taken from students if they are used during a rehearsal or performance. Students SHOULD NOT have their phones out in plain sight, or in the “on” (out-of-sight) position when in an outside-of-school hours band rehearsal/sectional or performance. This is completely concurrent with WBR Parish Handbook policy regarding cell phones in classes during school hours. Rehearsals are an extension of our class time, and the same standard will be utilized, as we will the same protocol followed when one is discovered during rehearsal time.

GRADES Grades will be based on attendance and punctuality, effort, music, fundamentals, personal appearance (clean uniform, grooming, etc.), care of equipment (instrument, music, uniform, etc.), cooperation, class participation and assignments. ATTENDANCE

Attendance at all scheduled concerts/performances is required and is part of your grade. This is a fundamental and integral part of your membership in band. Each performer in the ensemble is dependent on each band member being present to perform his or her specific and integral part. Because the band is more than just a collection of individual performers, it is necessary that we rehearse and perform as a unified group. Problems with individual attendance at performances seriously limit our ability to be consistent and strive for excellence. Every attempt has been made to structure a performance calendar that includes a reasonable number of performances.

The only excused absences from a scheduled rehearsal are: You are ill the day of the special rehearsal, and if school were in session you would be absent from school. (Please call

to report your illness/absence). A family emergency occurs. (Please call Mr. Foster). Pre-planned family activity. (Must be worked out in advance). Splitting time with another activity. (Must be worked out in advance).

The only excused absences from a scheduled performance are: You are ill the day of the special rehearsal, and if school were in session you would be absent from school. (Please call

to report your illness/absence). A family emergency occurs. (Please call Mr. Foster). Pre-planned family activity. (Must be worked out in advance). This should be limited to extreme situations only!

Call Mr. Foster and leave a voicemail to report an absence. 225-975-0834.

Any other absence from a rehearsal or performance is unexcused. Failure to notify the Band Director in a timely manner of your absence is also unexcused.

Unexcused absences from rehearsals or performances will: Negatively affect your grade in Band Restrict your opportunity to earn a Varsity Letter in Band Will result in a meeting to discuss your continued participation in band May lead to the loss of Band membership

***NOTE: student jobs, or work conflicts, are absolutely no excuse for missing a rehearsal or performance.

A complete PAHS Band Calendar is available online. Read and share this calendar information with your parents, employer, coaches, etc. and check for possible conflicts. In the event of a conflict, COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY! Talk to your Band Director, I support YOU! Every attempt will be made to be fair and understanding in the event of unusual circumstances.

DAILY EQUIPMENT

The following list is what each student should plan to bring to the appropriate rehearsal and/or performance. Other items may be added at the discretion of the directors.

All issued music Pencil Instrument All supplies relative to their instruments All marching related equipment (during marching season) Drill (marching band) Lyre/flip folder Other marching equipment as needed (could vary from year to year)

Page 11: Letter from the Director - …portallenhighschoolband.weebly.com/.../9/...hand_book… · Web viewAs a part of this great tradition, you will have many responsibilities and obligations

In addition, a metronome and tuner should be part of a band member’s tools for practice.

SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT

Any person using a school owned instrument or equipment must have a usage agreement form signed by a parent and the student before it is assigned for the season.

While it is checked out, you assume the FINANCIAL responsibility of normal maintenance or of carelessness. If there is a problem with your instrument, bring it to a director immediately - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR AN INSTRUMENT YOURSELF! The sooner problems are attended to, the better the instrument will operate and the less expensive it will be to maintain in the long run.

INSTRUMENT STORAGE

Band instruments should be stored on the shelves in the band room storage areas. People owning smaller instruments such as clarinets and flutes may wish to store them in their lockers. Make sure your instrument case is clearly marked with your name, address, and phone number. In addition, because many instrument cases look identical, a unique sticker or name tag prevents other students from accidentally taking the wrong instrument home. It is recommended that you record the serial number of your instrument; brand name and model, for safekeeping at home (in the highly unlikely event that your instrument were ever missing).

TRIPS

We are privileged to have the opportunity to travel out of town throughout the school year. We want everyone to have fun, but certain rules must be followed.

Bus Procedure

Follow all bus rules, at all times.Remain seated at all times.Do not throw anything out of the windows.Do not leave the bus until a director or chaperone tells you.File off the bus in an orderly manner.

Missing the Bus

Parents (and students) please be aware that if a student misses the departure time for a trip we will not be legally responsible for their actions or if anything were to happen. Once we depart a student is absent.

Rules of Conduct for Trips

Every member will be expected to represent parents, self, school, and community in the high standards of the PAHS Band. Members will be expected to conduct themselves like ladies and gentlemen at all times. There will be no tobacco on buses, in public, or in uniform. No boys will be in girls’ rooms or girls in boys’ rooms at any time.Do not disturb other guests in hotel rooms. There will be no yelling or unnecessary noise at any time.No inappropriate sexual activity. Be certain to maintain a good image.Learn the bus schedule and always be on time.Do not leave your instrument on the bus unless instructed to do so.Keep all language clean.Absolutely no alcoholic beverages or illegal substances. Avoid any kind of trouble from outsiders. Let the director(s) and chaperones take care of these situations. All students are required to be with the group at all times. Friends or relatives may visit with you, but do not ask to leave to visit them. Please do not leave any money in your room.Absolutely no charges to the room - no phone calls - use the pay phone.

You may not ride in an unauthorized vehicle for any reason, at any time. You must stay within the set boundaries at all times.Always be aware of the curfew, and abide by it.PAHS dress code must be followed. Exceptions might include the beach, pool, or in the hotel/condominium.

Any student guilty of disrespect, misconduct, or any other infraction of the rules will be subject to Port Allen Administration disciplinary actions. This may include suspension or expulsion. Any serious infractions on trips longer than one day may result in the student being sent home at his/her own expense.

BAND TRAVEL POLICY

It is the policy of this band that when traveling, no matter the distance, all members ride to and from events on the bus, unless other arrangements are made. If a parent wishes to pick THEIR child up from an event Mr. Foster must have a hand written note.

Please keep in mind that we are legally responsible for members for the duration of an event, which extends from report time until dismissal. If you break this rule you risk being removed from the band.

STAFF AND CHAPERONES

Everyone on the staff of the PAHS Band has been selected due to the skills and qualities they possess and for the benefit they can bring the band program, and should be considered an extension of the director(s). They are to be treated with the highest level of courtesy and respect.

Chaperones are also extensions of the authority of the director(s). Without the dedication of our chaperones and other adults that assist with the band, we could not travel or perform in the way we do. These people work hard, and the only payment they receive is our appreciation. Be respectful, polite, cooperative, and remember that the words "Thank You" cost you nothing but are highly valued by the recipient.

If you disagree with something a chaperone asks you to do, you are not to argue with the chaperone. You are to do as you are asked and then inform the director as soon as possible. This policy will be strictly enforced. (In the extremely unlikely event that a chaperon's instruction would cause you to violate civil law or moral standards, the student should ask to be taken by that chaperone to the director immediately). If a chaperone has to report a student for being uncooperative or for any other reason, that student is subject to disciplinary actions or removal from the group.

FUNDRAISERS

Fundraising is an essential part of the mission of the PAHS band. Fundraising contributes monies to individual student accounts and/or general fund. More information is available through the fundraising committee.

Individual Account Fundraisers

These fundraisers deposit money into the individual student account to help defray the expenses of an individual student’s band involvement.

Examples include: LSU Concessions, Car Washes, and Product Fundraisers.

General Fundraisers

General fundraisers add funds to the band general account. Support of these fundraisers is expected of ALL BAND students.

Examples include: Fall Raffle, LSU Concession (there are mandatory requirements), food sales, and Parades.
