LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to June! Weather wise we are off to a fantastic start to summer. I am always so excited when June comes as it brings beautiful weather, flowers and longer days. My mood always seems to be so much brighter in the summer. However, while preparing my message to you all I struggled with how much detail I should go into as it isn’t all bright and cheery.
First and most importantly: Our Hot Heels Fashion Show was incredible this year. Events like that take a lot of work to come to fruition. Thank you to the Hot Heels Committee for your commitment and dedication to this event. It was amazing! Your passion and commitment showed through in every single detail of the day. You made EWI Calgary look great. Thank you so much! As always, our Fashion Director, Leslie Davies did a great job. The fashions were incredible. We appreciated all of our retailers but I really wanted to put a spotlight on our own EWI Calgary member, Nancy Rosychuk owner of NV Fashions. NV was a major contributor to our show and both Master of Ceremony, Billie Jo Ross from Lite 95.9 and I were in outfits supplied by NV Fashions and Joseph Ribkoff. Thank you Nancy for your ongoing support and commitment! To our models - Well done! You looked gorgeous. It takes a lot of courage to step out on stage in front of almost 200 people and you all rocked it. It was wonderful to be able to say that they were our very own members, family and friends as well as some of the residents at our Charity, Highbanks Society. You all showed great poise and confidence. Thank you to all of you! Now for the not so cheery message. Due to a lack of interest we were forced to cancel our May membership meeting. Our events always take time and energy to plan and organize. I can’t tell you how disappointing it is when we don’t have the support of our

members. As a result, we spent a great deal of time in the last couple of weeks looking into and analyzing the state of the Calgary Chapter. Honestly, we are greatly concerned and we need to talk to our membership about how we move forward. That is why it is imperative that all members be in attendance at our June Meeting. This meeting will be held at Highbanks Society (our chosen charity for 2017). Wine, Cheese and appies will be served in this great setting and we will also be given a tour of this amazing facility. The price for the event is reduced as it is at our “Charity of Choice” location. June is a business meeting for our Chapter. We need everyone to attend so that we get everyone’s input into how our chapter moves forward. Please mark your calendars for June 21st and I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Sincerely,
Sherri

Between the silent auction and raffle tickets we raised nearly $9,000.00 at Hot Heels this year. In a time when the economy in our province and city is uncertain to say the least, it is nice to know that some things remain constant and that is the support of EWI friends, family and colleagues to make a positive difference in our community! Highbanks Society will receive a portion of the proceeds and through Birdies for Kids that donation will receive an additional fifty cents on each dollar donated. Hot Heels did something different this year with a set by Benzing Charlebois Furs! WOW!! You want to talk about “Statement Pieces”!
Rosemary Crawford and the team from Benzing Charlebois with some of models just before they strut their stuff on the runway! Now...there was one more amazing set of fashions, it was titled “After Dark” by BraTopia but you had to be at the show to see that!

A LETTER FROM HIGHBANKS Dear EWI Members, First I want to express my gratitude to all of you, and in particular, the organizing committee for including Highbanks Society in the outstanding Hot Heels Fashion Show! We had an incredible time at the event and the clients had fun modeling (I had fun shopping!). June always brings change and excitement to Highbanks. We’ve completed programming for the school year, including the Best You program that taught 8 workshops on resilience, stress management, life skills and setting goals. Our clients each took away new skills like meditation, goal setting, reframing negativity and all have committed to working on forgiveness until we reconvene in September. We are celebrating three young moms who are graduating high school in June and one who will graduate from SAIT! Everyone is preparing for the next adventure in their lives and four of our families are moving out of our building in West Hillhurst to off-site locations with our housing partners. These four women will be looking to outfit their new homes with furniture and housewares. If you, or a friend, have sets of gently used dishes, pots and pans, lamps or furniture and would like to donate to Highbanks, please speak to Barbra Hill-Jones at 403.521.0082 or [email protected]. Other items that are always welcome and help to relieve financial pressure for our clients are: Diapers (size 4 & 5), Ikea and Safeway gift cards and bus passes. Again, thank you for supporting Highbanks Society and thank you for welcoming me as a new member. I look forward to getting to know you all and hearing more about your life’s passions. Patricia Glenn Executive Director Highbanks Society

EXECUTIVE WOMEN INTERNATIONAL BURSARY ENDOWMENT END616375 – U OF C
Market value as of March 31, 2016 $50,449
Spending allocation available for 2015-16 $1,700
Projected spending allocation available for 2016-17 $1,900
Purpose: Offered annually to a single-parent undergraduate student, lawfully
having custody of their offspring, who is entering the final year in any faculty at the University of Calgary. The award is based on academic merit and financial need. To be eligible the student must be registered full time but need not be carrying a full course load.
I am pleased to advise that our 2016 UofC scholarship recipient is Marcy M. Craig. She was awarded $1,700. Marcy received her BSc in the Faculty of Social Work. Marcy also has a substantial background in Indigenous Studies and Early Childhood. She has faced much adversity in her early years, experiences of homelessness and addiction. This is what led her to focus her degree purely in Social Work. Marcy was born in Banff and raised in the Bow Valley before coming to Calgary in search of growth, opportunity and education at a very young age. Marcy is a single mother of a 10 year old daughter. Marcy “has had to work very hard to get into University as she did not follow a typical path in life and while at the same time providing a healthy future and present environment for her daughter. This has allowed her to follow her passion of helping others through their adversity and paying back the community that has empowered her so much.” Marcy says “that this award has allowed me to finish my degree with much less stress and financial strain since she has been reliant on student loans. Without this award I wouldn’t have been able to leave my part-time job and complete full time practicum this semester while juggling a full class load and a child.” Her future goals are to work with children in the system of Foster Care as well as complete her MSW or possibly PhD and one day teach. Our scholarship has been awarded to a well deserving student for which we can take pride in helping another young woman establish herself. Please remember:
Individuals or companies can make Donations/bequests to our EWI Endowment Fund at any time.
The University of Calgary will issue receipts for income tax purposes for any members or companies who make a contribution to our fund.
(See attached financials) If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me at 403 282-4640 or email me at: [email protected] Respectfully submitted, Fran Esler EWI UofC Endowment Fund
