Letter from the President & Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends: We are pleased to share with you our highlights from 2012 and to thank you for your generous contributions to our success. In 2012, the Animal Rescue League of Boston rescued and treated over 4,500 animals. is milestone was made possible by the dedicated sta and volunteers at the ARL. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to our mission and for their tireless work all year long. Building for the future, in May we cut the ribbon on the renovated Dedham Shelter, a capital project brought to life by the contributions of so many individuals, foundations and corporations. InAugust,Dr.MarthaSmith-BlackmoreandLt.AlanBorgal’shardworkoverseveral yearspaidoffwhentheCommonwealth’sanimalwelfarecommunitycelebrated the passage of S.2192 “An Act Further Regulating Animal Control,” the rst substantive reform of animal regulations in 78 years. 2012 was also a year of leadership transition at the ARL. Jay Bowen stepped downasPresidentinMayandDr.MarthaSmith-BlackmorebecameInterimPresidentuntiltheBoardofDirectorsappointedMaryNeeasPresidentinDecember. We congratulate Martha for her stewardship during this transition and are delighted that we will continue to benet from her expertise and passion inhernewroleasVicePresidentofAnimalWelfare. On our Board of Directors, Malcolm McDonald was elected as the new Board Chair in April and Richard Davey as a new Board member. We wish to recognize and thank retiring Board Chair, Paul Brennan, for his 35 years of Board membership and service to the ARL.

We cannot underscore enough that without the support of people like you, our work — to rescue domesticated animals and wildlife from suering, cruelty, abandonment and neglect — would not be possible.

ank you for the animals you saved and the human companionship you made possible in 2012. Sincerely,

“The League is unlike any other nonprot.” — Glenn Meckelburg Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society, past adopter

More than 40 years ago, Glenn began training to become a nurse anesthesiologist by assisting the veterinarians at the Animal Rescue League of Boston. His experience had a profound impact on his connection to the organization: “Working with people who truly cared about the animal’s welfare left me with lifelong positive memories of the ARL.”

He adopted his rst dog from the League and has had a variety of cats and dogs over the years. He currently has two beautiful Bengal cats, Aja and Simon — a brother and sister pair.

Glenn’s lifelong passion for animals and support for the League inspired his decision to join the Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society.

In Glenn’s own words, “I am choosing to leave a legacy with the League for many reasons, but the main one is I know that the money I am giving to the League will go directly to save animals’ lives, as well as to bring joy to the families that adopt an animal into their home.”

“Animals need a voice. Volunteers and sta who work at the League give them a voice.”

After losing her beloved 10-year old Leonberger and nursing her broken heart, Lisa adopted a second-generation “Katrina” dog Logan. A year later, Lucy — the sweetest dog anyone would want to meet and, like her brother, also from New Orleans — joined the family.

As a President’s Council member, Lisa’s continued support helps to further the League’s eorts to care for neglected, abused, and homeless animals. “I have been very blessed to have the means to provide high-quality care for my four-legged family members,” she explains, “and I wanted to share that with animals who are not so fortunate.”

The Animal Rescue League, she says, “is that wonderful safety net.”

Lisa rst learned about the League when she attended the April 2011 Open House event at the Dedham shelter. With the help of generous donations from people like Lisa, the Dedham facility received a complete renovation. “I was truly inspired by the mission of the League,” she explains, “and I donated in honor of the animals who have meant so much to me over the years.”

— Lisa Clifton President’s Council, donor to the Dedham Facility Renovation Project

“I am fascinated and inspired by what the League does as well as its history — that made me decide to become a supporter. ” — Pam Bankert Annual Fund donor, Brewster shelter volunteer, past League foster parent, past adopter, past Spay Waggin’ volunteer

After her two dogs won rst runner up in a pet parade/costume party in Orleans as a fundraiser for the League in 2003, Pam became a volunteer at the shelter, went on to foster over 20 animals in her home for the organization, and also provided assistance at Spay Waggin’ events. An appreciation for the League’s philosophy of respect to all living things, she says, fuels her support for the organization.

As a child, Pam shared her family’s New York City apartment with an old English sheep dog and a boxer. She now has two dogs adopted from the League: Ruby, a 5-year-old toy poodle, and Che Guevara, a 10-year-old cat. They love each other and their standard poodle sisters, 11-year-old Prudence and 6-year-old Jessie.

Pam donates to the Annual Fund to help sustain the programs and services that improve the lives of animals. She points to the League’s spay/neutering eorts: “Education about spay/neutering makes such a big dierence.”

Also thanks to support from Annual Fund donors like Pam, the League’s shelters continue to oer a welcoming, clean, and inviting environment. As she explains, “when people feel comfortable in the shelters they talk to people and learn about how best to care for animals.”

“I know that my money is going directly to help the animals at the organization.” — Julie Mackin President’s Council, Champions Circle, regular attendee of Boston shelter events, Rescue Team client

Almost 10 years ago, Julie Mackin wanted to give money to a local charitable organization that helped animals in her own backyard. After extensive research, the League’s work resonated with her most: “I loved how the League included all animals, horses, rabbits, and birds!”

She also called on the League’s Rescue Team to help with an injured goose that had wandered into her backyard. Her experience with the rescue technician’s patience and compassion for the animal drew her even closer to the League’s work.

Julie feels a strong condence in the League’s nancial management and diversity of programs that help ensure all animals receive the same level of care and compassion as her cherished canine, a 7-year-old German Shepard. “The Spay Waggin’ and the Center for Shelter Dogs are wonderful programs that go beyond merely sheltering animals for a short time,” she says.

Julie decided to become a Champions Circle member in 2007 because she believes it is critical to fund the organization throughout the year. By oering members the opportunity to give on a monthly basis, Champions Circle members like Julie can give more because they can spread their donation over 12 months.

“As native Bostonians, we both have had an awareness of the great work being accomplished by the Animal Rescue League of Boston. We are dedicated rescue dog adopters and believe deeply in the mission of the League. As to our decision to make it a signicant part of our estate planning…we could not think of a better legacy. ”
