Kodai School has now become a member of the Green School Alliance and our alumni through KFI are supporting efforts to raise environmental awareness by sponsoring programs promoting this in and around Kodai School. As for KFI, we are blessed to have a robust Board of Directors who generously give of their time and resources to support KFI and KIS. I never thank them enough for their service. Julie has been a wonderful addition to KFI and she has built upon the strong foundation secured by her predecessors: Jerry Nichol, Peter Jenks, Ellie Carman MacDonald and Jane Cummings. As a Board, we remain committed to building and advancing the work of the past to ensure KFI remains a strong resource for Kodai School and our alumni. We would encourage all of you to get involved, engage and support our Alma Mater. The better KIS becomes, the prouder we are as alumni. Sincerely, Jeetu Nanda ‘83 President KFI 2015-16 Annual Report

Jeetu Nanda, President

Letter From The PresidentDear Friends,

Another year is going to end soon and this has been another very interesting year.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all Happy Holidays as you spend time with your loved ones.

KFI has been specially blessed this year due to the support of all of you.

Gifts to KFI have increased over the previous year. It is a welcome sign of our alumni becoming more engaged. We have invested in some software programs to better connect with alumni and keep track of donors.

The biggest achievement this year was that after several years of trying, KFI submitted a grant request to USAID for the development of the school’s Poondi property as an Environmental Education Center that would be one of a kind in South Asia. We are awaiting the decision and will keep you posted. If we get the grant, the grantee will be KFI on behalf of Kodai School. There has been a lot of discussion and planning towards realizing the vision for the Palani Environmental Education Center and also the mechanics of administration of the grant.

KFI has continued to award scholarships using accrued interest and funds for projects from the donations you have given towards such endeavors. In order to continue to give meaningful scholarships to the academically exceptional students in need of financial support, KFI has envisioned named funds to have enough seed money that we can give scholarships while preserving the capital into perpetuity. Kodai School continues to give financial aid to students with financial need. Each year KIS sets aside approximately 8-10% of its Operating Budget to ensure students are able to study at KIS irrespective of their financial ability. While offering financial aid continues to be a significant historical commitment of KIS, the school has recognized its need to establish a fund for scholarships and has taken the step to designate funds for scholarships using the same process as KFI.

Sincerely,

From Our Executive Director

Julie Nichol Stengele ‘80

Dear Alumni and Friends of Kodai School,

Over the past year it became clear that KFI’s existence still causes confusion, the mission is unclear and KFI’s relevance is not understood. To give a little perspective, the largest number of Kodai School alumni are in the United States and India. Kodai Woodstock International (KWI) was established as a North-American based alumni organization to serve both Kodai and Woodstock Schools

by raising funds, marketing and providing administrative help for the schools - interviewing staff, being a resource for admissions questions, to name a few. KFI also created and maintained the alumni database, produced an annual alumni magazine, arranged alumni reunions, and submitted grant proposals on behalf of the schools. Ten years ago, KWI devolved into Kodai Friends International and Friends of Woodstock School, to better aid each school and their alumni in North America.

2015/16 was a significant year: it marked the end of the first decade for KFI; however, it is apparent that the message of KFI’s relevance is still unclear. To help clarify KFI’s position, one big step taken this past year was that KFI redefined its mission and adopted a new logo:

KFI serves to enhance the mission of KIS and other educational organizations in Tamil Nadu that strengthen the values of KIS through financial and administrative aid, as well as supporting KFI alumni and friends in North America.

The website was redesigned to facilitate keeping friends and alumni informed of current and relevant events. KFI renewed its commitment to donors by adopting the Donor Bill of Rights and creating a Gift Acceptance Policy. KFI has committed to assisting North America alumni with current and accurate information and is building a database so that communication through newsletters and direct mailings can be better managed. A few years ago the Board considered the question of KFI’s relevance, affirming the need for and existence of KFI. An additional step was taken in this direction, making the Executive Director position full-time.

The question remains: why is KFI relevant and necessary? The reasons are many and I’ll most likely continue this conversation in future communication. However, let me start by sharing the ways alumni and friends have supported and given to KFI over the past ten years. The donor base has been relatively small (800 since 2006); however, you have helped to make the following possible:

• Numerous scholarships have been awarded to qualifying students, making it possible for them to study at KIS and participate in field trips and conferences.

• Aid and assistance has impacted the local community through initiatives like the smokeless stoves project and installing solar panels.

• You have supported the exchange of ideas, protected the school’s archives, encouraged professional development, promoted leadership, ensured the arts are promoted, enhanced technology, promoted fitness, added to the beauty of the campus, ensured cultural diversity – making it possible for students and staff to broaden their horizons in numerous ways.

Most recently, through your generous support you have enabled KFI to respond to grant requests to fund and support KIS students and the Kodai community as pictured on page 3.

Truly, you have made a significant impact and made a difference in the life of our school, Kodai School. Thank you for your generosity of faith and belief in the mission of KIS, and for the dollars you have sent. It is remarkable what we have been able to accomplish together! I look forward to seeing what 2016/17 has in store and what might be possible with your help.

Sincerely,

Julie Please note our new email address: [email protected]
