Welcome to the 11th annual Autumn Brew Review (ABR)! Changes are happening all around us in the Craft Beer World. The Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild and ABR are changing right along. It was not that long ago that ABR was located in Peavey Plaza and the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild hoped for good weather because attendance depended on walk up sales to fill up the event. The hard work and perseverance of Dave Berg, Paul Norton, Jim Halbur, Mike Hoops, Scott Krebsbach, and Bob DuVernois and many others on those early fests cannot be forgotten.
We have now expanded into two sessions to keep up with the demand for tickets into ABR keeping in mind our overall goal of exposing more and new folks to the delights of craft beer culture. The work of Laura and Colin Mullen, the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild festival committee members, volunteers, brewers and distributors has culminated into today’s great event. We debut an original art-work by local artist Adam Turman to commemorate this year’s ABR. The Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild has been busy as well this year. We have redesigned our brand and logo with the help of Star Creative out of Duluth and debut our new look to beer fans today. Since last year’s ABR we have hired on Laura Mullen as a our Guild Coordinator and her help has been much appreciated. Trying to organize brewers is like, well, there aren’t many good analogies for it. We are also excited to announce the first summer beer festival put on by the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild. The event will take place at Bayfront
Festival Park in Duluth on July 21, 2012. Mark your calendars for this new fest, get your hotel room now, and help us find a great name the festival by submitting your ideas via the tear-off slip in the back of this program and handing it in at the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild info booth. As you go around the festival today, check out some of the new member breweries that have opened up in the last year here in Minnesota: Big Wood, Castle Danger, Dubrue, Harriet, Leech Lake, Olvalde, Steel Toe & Stillwater. After checking out their newest additions to the Minnesota beer scene stop by and see old friends and your favorite breweries from around the US here at ABR. Enjoy the day and thank you for attending!
See you drinking,

THEN FIND THE PERFECT CRAFT BEER CHASER!
HOW TO SELECT A GREAT BLOODY MARY BEER CHASERby Michael Agnew, Certified Cicerone | A Perfect Pint | www.aperfectpint.net The mouth-coating texture and salty/spicy flavor of a Bloody Mary makes the beer chaser a near necessity. Here in the upper-Midwest it’s pretty much de rigueur. American lager is the norm, but these suggestions might add some zip to that post-cocktail palate cleanser.
PILSNER AND HELLES LAGERThey have the same palate cleansing power of that light lager, but with more flavor and oomph to both complement and contrast the cocktail.
HEFE WEIZEN AND WITBIERLight and spritzy, they’ll work to wash away the thick tomato juice. They’ll add intrigue with fruity and spicy yeast flavors and hints of citric acidity.
DARK BELGIAN ALESWhy does the chaser have to cleanse? Bask in the beauty of full-flavored, full-bodied, seductive sweetness as the beer envelopes the booze in a candy-like blanket and yeasty fruit and spice weave scintillating patterns with the juice.

TASTING BEEr BASICSAutumn Brew Review is an opportunity to sample hundreds of beers from great brewers both local and not-so-local. Make the most of it by taking the time to savor the flavor. With every beer you taste follow this simple three-step process; smell, see, sample.
SMELL – Don’t be shy. Stick your nose deep in the glass and take a big whiff. Breathe in the bright earth, spice and citrus of the hops. Let the cereal smells of malted grains over-take your senses. Yeast too brings smells; fruit, spice, sulfur, sour and funk.
SEE – Hold your glass up to the light. Take note of each beer’s jewel-like color and pristine clarity (or the stylistic lack thereof). Brewers take great pains to raise that frothy head. Give them back a moment of your time to admire its texture, color and duration.
SAMPLE – Finally you taste the beer. The sensation is so much sweeter for having in-dulged the first two steps. Let the sample sit a moment on your tongue. Is it a malty beer or do the hops hold sway? Perhaps it’s yeast that takes the day. And is that a subtle hint of spice that lurks in the background?

□ HOP CRISIS The name is a tribute to the hop shortage a few years ago. A imperial IPA aged in oak using Columbus,Centennial and cascades as the bittering hops and dry hopping with Simcoe, Ahtanum, Amarillo, and Cascades.
ABV - 9.7%
NOTES:
□ BACK IN BLACK Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.
ABV - 6.8%
□ BREW FREE OR DIE I.P.A. Deep golden color. Citrus and piney hop aromas. Assertive malt backbone supporting the overwhelming bitterness. Dry hopped in the fermenter with four types of hops giving an explosive hop aroma.
21ST AMENDMENT BrEwErY - #86
SAN FRANCISCO, CA | WWW.21ST-AMENDMENT.COM | BREWMASTER: SHAUN O’SULLIVAN
In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan met in early 1995 in San Francisco. Both had just moved from southern California to the Bay area when they heard the calling of beer. O’Sullivan, a former photographer and paralegal, “traded his suits for boots and was saved by beer”. He moved to Berkeley and took a job as assistant brewer at the Triple Rock Brewery there. Freccia, a writer, actor and, by extension, restaurant professional, was also an avid homebrewer. Frustrated with the lack of beer culture in the L.A. area, he moved to San Francisco and began writing for the Celebrator Beer News, the west’s largest beer publication. Freccia and O’Sullivan met, became friends and, while sitting together in a summer class on brewing science at UC Davis, hatched their plan for what would become the 21st Amendment.

□ ALASKAN AMBER Alaskan Amber is richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to provide the perfect balance. This highly drinkable alt-style beer suits first-time craft beer drinkers as well as seasoned connoisseurs.
ABV – 5.3% IBU - 18
□ ALASKAN WHITE Alaskan White Ale has a soft, slightly sweet base with the unique spice aroma of coriander and crisp, citrus finish of orange peel. A light and effervescent body combined with the smooth palate creates a complex and delicate beer that is deliciously refreshing in any season.
ABV – 5.3% IBU - 15
□ ALASKAN I.P.A.Alaskan IPA has a rich, golden color and fruity, citrus aroma. An enticing blend of hops and our dry hopping process, in which hops are added directly to tanks during fermentation, give this brew a very intense, complex aromatic character with a refreshing hop finish.
ABV – 6.2% IBU - 55
□ ALASKAN 2010 BARLEYWINEAlaskan Barley Wine is a full bodied ale, deep mahogany in color and brewed with an array of complementing malts to achieve its high original gravity. Multiple hop additions in the boil and dry hopping during fermentation provide contrast to the big malt character
resulting in the smooth balance that distinguishes this specialty brew. Like many fine wines, Alaskan Barley Wine may be aged in the bottle and gains deeper malt complexity and smoothness over time.
ABV – 10.7% IBU – 60

JUNEAU, ALASKA | WWW.ALASKANBEER.COM | BREWERS: ALASKAN BREW CREW
In December 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited the rich Alaskan brewing tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan Brewing Co. officially began operations when Geoff, Marcy and 10 volunteers spent 12 hours hand packaging the first 253 cases of Alaskan Amber for distribution in Juneau, Alaska. From that very humble beginning, Alaskan Brewing Co. has grown to become the most award-winning craft brewery in the history of the Great American Beer Festival and expanded distribution to 12 western states.

SESSION I BEER LIST
□ BATCH 10,000 The last of a series, Batch 10,000 Ale looks back to our home-brewing roots. After combing through the catalogs of many, many malt & hop suppliers, our brewers used over 100 different malts, grains, and other fermentables, and followed them up with a blend of sixty different hop varietals between the kettle additions and dry-hopping. The resulting beer presents a deep, chocolate brown hue and offers roasted & caramel notes from the malts mixed with an assertive hop character.
Sharply bitter, the beer possesses a full mouthfeel without being heavy & will withstand aging in your cellar, if you prefer.
ABV - 9.2%
□ RYE STOUTRye Stout presents the earthy flavor of rye in a stout package. Roasted malts are definitely present, but the dark chocolate aspect is favored over coffee notes. Lighter than several in the Bell’s stout portfolio, Rye Stout remains a full-bodied beer with the rich, dark chocolate aromas of various roasted malts.
ABV - 6.5%
□ ORACLEOur take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the floral aromatic punch of two separate dry-hop sessions with Amarillo and NZ Pacific Jade. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.
ABV - 10.4%
BELL’S BrEwErY, INC. - #46
KALAMAZOO, MI | WWW.BELLSBEER.COM | BREWMASTER: LARRY BELL
Founded by Larry Bell as a home-brewing supply shop in 1983, Bell’s Brewery, Inc. sold its first beer in September 1985. Beer was initially brewed in a 15-gallon soup kettle and the company has grown remarkably from its production of 135 barrels (1 bbl = 31 gal.) in 1986 to over 124,000 barrels in 2009. In 2003, Bell’s opened a new production brewery in nearby Comstock, Michigan. The new facility has now seen three major additions since then and encompasses over 60,000 square feet of building on a 24 acre site. Beers are now brewed on a 50-barrel system, with the operations running 24/7. With vessels ranging in size from 50-400 barrels, the fermentation cellar can hold up to 20,000 barrels at any given moment, allowing the brewery a total annual brewing capacity of 170,000 barrels.
Despite expansion at the main production facility, we haven’t forgotten our roots, and we continue to brew at the original Kalamazoo location. Using the same equipment that served us so well for years, this space has become home to several specialty projects, as well as brewing an extensive array of brands typically only available at the adjoining Eccentric Café. Between the two brewing locations, the company currently employs over 100 people.

Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy por-tion of wheat, while German hops lend herbal notes to the aroma.

□ HOPSOLUTION ALEHopsoulution Ale is a German Double India Pale Ale with a dark amber hue brewed with Premiant and Smaragd hops bringing a heady hop aroma to a malty base, rich with caramel & toffee notes.
ABV - 8.0%
□ BLACK NOTE One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell’s history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel.
ABV - 8.0%
□ QUINANNAN FALLSBorn in a dream, Quinannan Falls Special La-ger Beer refers to a mythical place in the boreal north. While the waterfall may exist solely in
Larry Bell’s imagination, the beer he remem-bered drinking there is now quite real. Quinan-nan Falls possesses the crisp, dry bitterness you’d expect from a German pilsner, but the use of highly aromatic hops from the Pacific Northwest in both the kettle & dry-hop invokes the fragrant pine forests that inspired this beer.
ABV - 6.3%
□ OARSMANDesigned as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy por-tion of wheat, while German hops lend herbal notes to the aroma.

□ MOOSE DROOLIt’s chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and WILLAMETTE HOPS. It has an original gravity of 13 degrees Plato.
ABV - 5.3%
□ IPA This big, rich IPA features Simcoe hops which give it both a fruity, piney hop nose and a clean, ringing bitterness. IN-between, the malt flavor is slightly caramel for a touch of malt sweetness. This IPA is well-balanced and very expressive with hops.

BIG SKY BrEwING CO. - #60
MISSOULA, MT | WWW.BIGSKYBREW.COM | BREWMASTER: MATT LONG BREWERS: BEN LUKES, JARRETT BABINSACK
We have a pretty simple philosophy here at Big Sky Brewing, every day we strive to produce balanced, world class beers, while having as much fun as possible doing it. Our company is full of people who share a core connection to what we feel is the good life. This includes good friends, fresh air and doing something you care about. We Make Water Fun. Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. Brad was impressed with Bayern Brewing Company but felt that there was room in Missoula for a second brewery; and since Neal and Brad specialized in brewing English style ales he felt that an ale brewery would be producing very different beers than Bayern Brewing Company did. Neal agreed, and the two began to work on starting up a brewery.

BOSTON, MA | WWW.SAMUELADAMS.COM | BREWMASTER: JIM KOCH HEADBREWER: DAVE GRINNEL
The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars in Boston with the belief that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. That beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, and it helped catalyze what became known as the American craft beer revolution. Today, the Company brews more than 31 styles of beer and uses the traditional four vessel brewing process and often takes extra steps like dry-hopping and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. It passionately pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of its classic beers by constantly searching for the world’s finest ingredients. While Samuel Adams is the country’s largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for just under one percent of the U.S. beer market. For more information, please visit www.samueladams.com.

□ COCOANUT MOOJOOSA combination of cocoa nibs and fresh shaved coconut for a tropical twist on our Oatmeal Milk Stout.
□ PARADISE JAVA MOOJOOSFresh-roasted Sumatran Coffee Beans from our friends at Paradise Coffee Roasters infused into MooJoos.
(DRAFT ALE) □ BANCREAGIE PEATED SCOTCH ALE
Underneath Lucan sits a large, ancient granite aquifer which delivers classic brewing water for a malty ale. At Brau Bros, we fill in the remaining ingredients to brew Bancreagie Peated Scotch Ale. Named for the light-colored rock itself, Bancreagie relies on a complex and deep malt bill, featuring authentic peat-smoked malt. A traditional Scottish yeast is pitched and ferments a sweet, smoky and malty ale.
□ MOOJOOS OATMEAL MILK STOUTMoo Joos combines the full body of a Milk Stout with the silky smoothness of an Oatmeal Stout. Lactose sugar in the boil contributes a full and creamy mouthfeel while toasted and flaked oats in the mash round out the beer with an oily texture. A deep malt bill builds layers of roasty notes with hints of chocolate, coffee, and anise. A traditional British Cask Yeast is then pitched, which leaves us with a fruity, malty ale.

LUCAN, MN | WWW.BRAUBEER.COM | HEAD BREWER: DUSTIN BRAU BREWERS: DANIEL STAVIG, CHANCE MITCHELL
Brau Brothers Brewing Co, LLC is located in the tiny town of Lucan, Minnesota. Tucked in the southwest part of the state, we have worked to restore the rich tradition of the small town brewery. Established in the spring of 1998, the brewery began as a brew pub on Main Street. We then spent the next eight years honing our brewing skills, building recipes, and collecting feedback. In 2006 the brewery moved to a six acre brewery complex on the edge of town. Today the brewery is surrounded by the state’s first commercial hop yard. Spanning three acres, we cur-rently grow eleven different varieties of hops which are used for many of our beers. We also grow our own malting barley, which is malted on-site and mashed within sight of the barley field.

□ SHEAPHEAD ALEAs the official card game of the Brau family, sheep head is often a bitter affair. Hops trump this ale featuring four spicy varieties in generous additions. Finally, an extended period of dry-hopping brings it all together. Malt is not completely forgotten, as multiple toasted malts do not fail to add balance and structure to this intense ale. Our game is as unique as our beer, both a Brau family treat!
□ RING NECK ALEFirst brewed in the fall of 2006, RingNeck Ale was a stepping stone for Brau Bros in terms of melding styles and pushing ingredients to produce unique flavors and aromas. Hints of chocolate and raspberry are intertwined with a nutty quality derived from barley and oats. Fuggle vines edge the southern face of the brewery’s hop yard and make up the bulk of hop additions. The focus is on malt, however, with toasted oats and biscuit malt highlighting the bill.

□ OMMEGANG BPA Ommegang BPA is pale. It’s ale. And it’s Belgian-style. Ommegang has combined the delicious aromas and flavors of Belgian-style ale with more hops than we’ve ever put in a beer. A well-balanced, yet ample, hop character defines this fine pale ale. This uncommon Belgian pale ale offers citrus and tropical fruit aromatics and flavors, a full body and a lush white pillowy head, BPA uses Ommegang’s own Belgian yeast, five malts, two hops, and lots of patience to brew. BPA finishing touches include dry-hopping with Cascade hops. Pairs with lighter fare, salads and seafood. Yet has the character and body to hold up to stronger fare, spicy foods, pizzas, burgers. Also a superb session-style draft beer. Delightfully easy to drink, yet always interesting and engaging. Legendary Ommegang character, quality and balance; in a totally new

□ THREE PHILOSOPHERSQuadrupel Ale. The Belgian motto is “Strength in Union.” No phrase better describes Ommegang’s delicious Three Philosophers Quadrupel, which unites malty Belgian-style ale with Liefmans Kriek, authentic cherry ale from Belgium. The result is a harmonious Belgian-style blend of surprising strength. A dark, mysterious cherry-chestnut color, full carbonation with smooth, tan head. Opaque but not cloudy. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, dark fruits, vanilla, sweet and sour cherries, coffee, currants, brandied raisins and chocolate.
Notable sweetness and low bitterness with well-developed malts. Smooth but not syrupy. Mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish. The strength and complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify. Pairs well with strong cheeses and works well as a dessert beer or after-dinner drink. It can also stand up to big, hearty dishes like smoked meat, juicy beef and game. The sweetness pairs nicely with smokiness. Warming finish but alcohol is not overly apparent.

Together, they have teamed with brewmaster Kevin Crompton, formerly from Bohemian Brewery. Crompton has been brewing for more than 13 years and brewed for three Utah breweries and another in Hawaii. Admittedly, beer geeks, foodies and epic adventure junkies, the three share a passion for making and drinking fine ales and lagers. The EPIC team has a strong belief in doing everything “all out.”

□ DAILY PILSAn assertively hopped continental pilsner; the lighter malts provide a nice showcase for the flavor and aroma of imported Czech Saaz hops. A drier pils with a firm bitterness and characteristic hop bouquet.
□ ALT BIER Copper-colored and hoppy, this beer is most easily compared to a German form of pale ale. Popular around Dusseldorf, the name means simply “old” and recalls a time before Germany made primarily lagers. This beer features a high bitterness and aroma characteristic of generous additions of hops to the brew.
□ OKTOBERFEST A stronger version of our Marzen Lager, we brew a batch or two of this each fall to commemorate the great Munich Oktoberfest. Reddish, malty and on the sweeter side.
□ HIGH POINT DUNKEL As a true Munich-style Dunkel should, our High Point weighs down the glass with the full bodied, complex maltiness that only the heavy-handed use of roasted malts can imbue.

□ MILK STOUT NITRORoasted malt and coffee flavors build the foundation of this sweet stout. This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

□ SAWTOOTH ALESawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its “proper” drinking temperature. The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the
appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly. This amber ale is the perfect balance between malt and hops. A great session beer.

LAVISTA, NE | WWW.LUCKYBUCKETBREWING.COM | BREWERS: ZAC TRIEMERT
Three of us, a dream, and a couple too many beers set the groundwork for Lucky Bucket Brewing Company. We pondered the unique flavor that comes from barrel-aged beers and experimented to perfect the process. Our passion grew with each barrel. Sometimes we’d nail it and sometimes it was laughable. But along the way, we brewed a lager we just couldn’t stop drinking. With a grin on our face and a mug in hand, we knew this was to be our first release: Lucky Bucket Pre-Prohibition Lager, our hand-crafted, session beer. The first pint was poured in January 2009 at a small pub in Omaha, Nebraska with a great response.
What about that name? In the days before kegs and bottles were available, the only way to get beer was to take a bucket to the local brewery, fill it up and lug it back home. We admire the work it took to enjoy a great beer. Our name pays homage to our humble beginnings, the original Lucky Bucket.

MANTORVILLE, MN | WWW.MANTORVILLEBEER.COM | WWW.STCROIXBEER.COM BREWMASTER: TOD FYTEN
History: The Mantorville Brewery was founded in 1858 as the Dodge County Brewery by John Herschi. One year later the brewery was purchased by Peter Ginsburg, who in 1864 built a larger facility in Mantorville, at the east end of Main Street on Brewery Creek. Like many of the pioneer breweries of the bluff country, it served the local immigrant farmers in the area. The brewery continued under successive owners until 1939 when it closed and its copper kettle was scrapped for the war effort. In 1996 the Mantorville Brewery was once again reborn through the efforts of six local home brewers. Introduced that year was Stagecoach Amber Ale, named for the famous Stagecoach Saloon, located in the Historic Hubbell House. In 1999 Tod Fyten became a partner in the brewery and 2002 he purchased the brewery from his remaining partners. Today the brewery is expanding its draft production and is celebrating the 14th year in business with the release of it’s Golden and Smoked Porter in 6 packs, joining the Stagecoach Amber Ale 6 packs at local area stores.

□ 10-10-10 (FIRST SESSION)When New Belgium brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, decided to leave old Belgium for New Belgium, he had to shelve his preference for the metric system and embrace the English standard in the US. Liters and hectoliters, divisible by ten, were replaced with gallons, barrels and “case equivalents”. Bouckaert realized that October 10th, 2010 represented an opportunity to celebrate his beloved metric system with a beer conceived, brewed and fermented by the Tens. The result is 10.10.10, a beer made from 10 ingredients on 10.10.10 at 10:10 in the am, then fermented in Fermentation Vessel # 10 for 10 days resulting in an ABV of 10%. “I realized I had to do something special for this metric year and brewing a beer is the easiest way for me to celebrate,” Boucakert said. “I also wanted this to be a simple beer – as simple as the metric system itself.” 10.10.10’s 10 ingredients include a lager yeast, Polish noble hops, multiple malts, black pepper and grains of paradise. Though relatively high in alcohol at 10% ABV, the beer finishes quite dry with a fruity nose from spicing. Sometimes the simplest things come in Tens.

□ OOH LA LA (SECOND SESSION)At New Belgium, we’ve always been fans of Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s the whole love thing. Or maybe it’s that our brewers take it upon themselves to come up with a specialty Valentine’s Day beer. (See all the men nodding.) So, brewing to their hearts’ desire, they requested heaps of Northwest raspberries to be made into a fresh, single-strength juice. That berrylicious juice was then blended into a black malt base beer. Or rather, the beer was brewed into the juice, as Oh La La is 40% raspberry juice and 60% beer. The result is a bold, deep garnet ale that will bring visions of chocolate-covered raspberries and whispers of “oh la la” to your mouth. It’s complex. Much like the emotions of our brewers.

Ale is a beverage made from the fermentation of cereal grains, accompanied in ancient times by other fermentable materials such as honey and tree saps. To this end, our ales are warm conditioned on their lees, unfiltered, and refermented in the bottle.

They are meant for local consumption only, as they are a fresh product. As such, they need to be refrigerated to stay at peak flavor. We use no additives or finings in our products. Each keg and every bottle retains residual amounts of yeast that will settle out if left undisturbed and cold. This yeast can be mixed back into the beer with agitation and will eventually re-settle on the bottom. Our yeast strains are custom made for us in Oregon, and all of our barley, wheat and hops are American grown. We currently offer five full-time beers, and will occasionally brew seasonals for fun.

SUrLY BrEwING CO. - #27 **MN GUILD MEMBEr**
BROOKLYN CENTER, MN | WWW.SURLYBREWING.COM | BREWERS: TODD HAUG, CAL RYAN, JER-
ROD JOHNSON, SPENCER ANDERSON
Surly Brewing Company sold their first beer in February of 2006. The idea for Surly originated a couple years before that. Homebrewer Omar Ansari came up with the idea of opening a brewery after seeing a 3 BBL homebrew set-up in a magazine. Soon there afterword, Omar met Todd Haug at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego. Todd Haug was the head brewer at the Minneapolis Rock Bottom. They began talking about what type of beers the Twin Cities needed and what they would want their brewery to be about. The concept was not about extreme beers. The concept was simple, brew the best beer we could, brew styles that aren’t available here, focus on beer festivals and cask beer. We don’t filter out the flavor, we use lots of the best ingredients we can find, and we brew beers that we want to drink. And more thing Todd and I spoke of when putting this brewery together, have a little fun.

TOMMYKNOCKEr BrEwErY - #57
IDAHO SPRINGS, CO | WWW.TOMMYKNOCKER.COM | BREWMASTER: STEVE INDREHUS
In the late 1800’s, miners immigrated to Colorado from Cornwall, England to work the gold and silver mines in Clear Creek County. They brought with them superstitions and tales of elf-like beings who lived in the cracks and crevices of the mines. These little creatures, known as Tommyknockers, were rarely seen, but were often heard singing and working. There were two types of Tommyknockers. The mischievous Tommyknockers dumped over the miner’s lunch pails, blew out their candles and lamps, and hid picks and shovels. Friendly Tommyknockers knock-knocked on the walls of the mines to show the miners where the richest ore veins could be found. They were short in stature, standing only two feet tall, wore colorful shirts, and had wrinkled, kindly faces with large heads. There are many tales of Tommyknockers saving the lives of miners. One such story tells about a miner who was trapped in a deep pool of water down in a mine shaft. From nowhere, a pair of hands shoved him from behind, up and out of the pool. Seconds later, a gigantic boulder fell exactly where the miner had been trapped. Miners were never harsh with even the most mischievous Tommyknockers because they believed the creaking timbers, tapping on pipes, falling stones and misplaced equipment were warning signs from the Tommyknockers of impending danger. Many miners left tidbits of their lunch to encourage good fortune and safety brought about by the Tommyknockers.
