Letter of Appreciation

First of all, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all who participated in our “2010 International Conference on Humanitarian and Development Assistance to the DPRK” for your valuable presentations and lively discussions.

Compared with last year, this year’s conference hosted a more diverse range of institutions and specialists, enabling us to engage in rich and fruitful discussions. This was an informative event at which we were able to hear fresh voices from those working at aid sites within North Korea and also share deep insights derived from years of experience. We were also able to build a common awareness of the problems in North Korean humanitarian assistance and development aid through discussions of development cooperation experiences in Vietnam and China and their implications for North Korea, as well as ideas for ongoing cooperation between Korean NGOs and their international counterparts. Unfortunately in trying to absorb such a diverse set of topics in a limited amount of time, we found that the time allotted for discussion was entirely insufficient. We also regret that inevitably a number of organizations that had originally planned to attend were ultimately unable to do so for various reasons. We will endeavor to work on these problems and to prepare a more substantive conference for next year.

As was mentioned at the closing of the conference, we are planning to hold next year’s conference in Seoul, November 2-4, 2011, with a focus on the topics of international cooperation and the development of the North Korean people’s economy. We would be happy to hear from you at any time if you have suggestions regarding the topics or execution of next year’s conference.

Recently tensions have been extremely high on the Korean peninsula, and at the moment it is difficult to foresee what will come next for inter-Korean relations. At times like this it is more important than ever for civil society to work for the promotion of peace and humanitarianism. Wherever you may be, we hope that you will continue to pray for peace on the Korean peninsula and to ensure that international concern for the plight of the North Korean people does not fade.

Once again, our thanks go out to all participants in the 2010 International Conference, and we hope to see you again to continue our discussions at next year’s conference.
