Re: Seedina of the Fenced Area at the Western Sand and Gravel Site

Dear Messn. Gallaaher and Harvey:

To prevent erosion from compromising the integrity of the Western Sand and Gravel cap the site will be seeded accordina to the attached revised spec:ifi tion. The attached revisions are made to the ConstrUction P1ocedures and Specifications document, Section lll, Part 14.

The specifications revision was m d n~essary due to a chana in th anticipated plantina season (i.e. inter venus fall). The specifications have been re ised aft r revi w of a Soil Test Report by the Univenity of Rhode Island-Cooperative Ext nsion (attached) and after review of literature provided by U EPA (reference letter of J. G llaaher to J. Brown dated Juty a, 1987).

Please call if there are IJ)y questions.

Interpreting Your Basic Soil Test

The "Soil Test Report" you Mve received is a direct and specific analysis of the soil sa.ple tMt you sent to the U.R.I. Soil testing Laboratory. It is easily read and the lnfor.ation applied to your individual situation by use of the enclosed reca.mendation sheet(s) for your plants.

Reading froa left to riaht, the first applicable column is labeled Texture. The letters listed under Texture refer to the ley at the far right of the Soil Test Report. They are a rough arade of the soil sample without mechanical analysis and are used when determining liming requirements. As a rule of thumb, sandy soils require less lime than silty soils. This is related to the size of the particles and their chemical properties.

The next column is labeled pH-Acidity. The numbers listed in this column are a measure of how "sweet" or "sour" the 1oil is as Masured on a 1cale of 0-14. A pH of 7..0 ia neutral, numbers above 7 are alkaline, numbers below 7 are acid. Host 1oils in Rhode Island are acid, and therefore, require lime. Read the pH number on the Soil Test Report, and uaina thia number refer to Table I on the recommendation ah et. Find your pH ~aadina or the number closest to it and read acrosa to find the a.ount of lU.. needed for your pH and soil texture.

The next three columns are the available fertilizer levels in the soil. Nitrate, Phoaphorus, and Potassium. All readinas are listed: VL • very low, L • low, M • Mdiu., H • hiah, and VH • very blah and •Y be related to the available fertilizer in the soil in Parts Per Million or Pounds per Acre of fertilizer to uae for your plants.

The col-., labeled Sol. Salta, vill not ahov a n•ber unlasa a probl• of over fertilization or usa of poor quality lrriaation water bas polluted the soil over a period of tiM. In these inatances a •parate aheet is enclosed to explain this situation in .ore detail and pro.lde reco..andations on hov to helpplants recover.

The col-., labeled Oraanic Matter shows .,. uti.aate on the uount of Oraanic Hattar in the soil le, without the benefit of analysis. lstt.Ates are listed u L • low • less than 31, M • .oderate • l•SI, B • hiah • S·ll, and VB • very blah • II aad above.
