Sorrowby Lauren Benz

Sorrow is grey like a rainy and gloomy day when there is nothing to doSorrow is hot like the burning pain in your heart when you feel like you can’t fix the problemSorrow is cold like when you know that you have gone too farSorrow sounds like crying alone in your room because you didn’t mean to hurt themSorrow tastes like warm, sour tears rushing down your faceSorrow smells like a loud sharp rain hitting your windowSorrow feels like bitterness when thinking of the words you should have saidSorrow moves slowly like a terrible nightmare that seems to never end

Unfinishedby CeCe Quirk

Unfinished is white like God forgot to give you colorUnfinished is hot like all that is in you is a burning soulUnfinished is cold like the warmth of light is hidden too far away to findUnfinished sounds like a continuous echo in an abandoned dark caveUnfinished tastes like a little raindrop, no flavor at allUnfinished smells like a red rose with no fragrance to match its beautyUnfinished looks incomplete like a vast, blue sky without a bright sunUnfinished feels empty like you don’t have any emotionsUnfinished moves like a meaningless stroll through life searching for a purpose

One Word Makes a Differenceby Nina Ciocca

I was trapped in a box for so long; no conversation,no opinion, no voice. Most people say it was atragedy that I overcame, but I say it was an event thatmade me stronger. Chatterboxes and the quiet ones,I was neither. This was the first time I realized that oneword could make a difference, and one disabilitywould not stop me. Imagine in kindergarten not having one friend inschool or one answer to a simple question. Schoolwas hard, especially for me. I was finished withtherapy and learning help, I was ready to take myselective mutism into my own hands. Selectivemutism is a condition that restricts talking in publicplaces or outside of your own home. The only talking Idid was whispering to my family members all daylong. I was, unfortunately, one of those kids who wasborn with it. Ever since birth, I was going to a therapistfor my problem, but I never liked it. I always just satthere, not saying a peep, staring up at the ceiling. Iknew I would have to come out of my shell sometime, but I did not know when. Most babies’ first word is“mommy” or “daddy,” mine was “hi.” In fact, I stillremember the sunny July morning when I was drivingto my weekly therapist

Personal Narrative

session, when I felt something magical was going tohappen that day. We signed in and waited in theplayroom for my turn. They called my mom and meback into the room like usual, and we had a seat inthe tiny colorful office. Time went by like everyday, and nothing seemed to change. When all eyes turnedon me, as I was now the center of attention, theyheard not only a sound, but a scratchy, small voicethat said the word “hi.” Little did my 7year old body know that, in thatmoment, was the start of a brand new chapter in mylife. Day after day I would speak more and more, andsoon I grew into my normal, selfenthusiastic, loving,12year old self. I was me: Nina Catherine Ciocca. I was trapped in a body for 7 years. Seven years ofno conversation, no opinion, no voice. I believe that itwas an event that made me stronger, and thememories continue to strengthen me throughout mylife. I look back to my tragedy, not afraid of what willbecome of it in my future, and realize that one wordmakes a difference.

“Sunrise, Sunset”by Lauren Dietzler

Aurora was a beautiful goddess. She had long, flowing golden hair that spilled over her shoulders. Her hair was bright too, like the sun. Her skin was agolden tan, and her eyes were an intense shade ofgreen with flecks of gold. Aurora was the goddess ofthe sun. During her time she would make the daysbright by helping the flowers grow in peace. She wasalways happy until one day, when something coveredup her light. Tenebris was dark. He had thick, black curly hair, pale skin, and mysterious dark brown eyes. He had adifferent kind of beauty. He was the god of the stars. The twinkling of the little lights gave him joy, butAurora always kept her sun out. He could never showanyone the beauty of the stars. Finally, he had achance while Aurora was sleeping in the meadow. Hetook his stars and darkness out of his cloak and flungthem up into the sky. The sun was guzzled up by thedarkness and little bit of light from the stars. The skydimmed, and he could see nothing except hisbeautiful stars. Aurora was furious. How could someone have theaudacity to make the world dark? She did not knowwho did this, but they would pay! She was rapidlyrunning to the clearing to get a better look when shenoticed a man. She stopped running. Aurora knew, without a doubt, that he was the one, the one whostole her light. Tenebris stared at Aurora. She was infuriated. Her face was burning bright red. He began talkingwhen she started furiously yelling at him. She said,“How dare you steal my light! I don’t know who youare, but...” “I am Tenebris, God of the Stars. See thosetwinkling lights in the sky? Those are the stars.” “I do not care about your stars. I care about mysun,” said Aurora. “Well, you should care about my stars becausethey will be out a lot more often,” he yelled back. “No, they will not! My sun is more important,” sheretorted. The two gods went on arguing until they decidedthat they would compete to see which sky the humansliked better. While they were preparing for thecompetition, Tenebris fell in love with Aurora. He didnot want her to know, so he did not say anything toher. Tenebris won the competition, and Aurora wasbrokenhearted. Not only had she

lost, but she realized that she loved Tenebris, too.“Tenebris would never love me,” she thought, “hehates me.”She cried to herself all the way back to herhome. Tenebris noticed Aurora crying, so he followed her.He knocked on her door, and with puffy, red eyesAurora opened the door. Not knowing what to do,Tenebris kissed Aurora. Tenebris knew that sheloved him back at that moment. He gave her a gift toshow his affection for her, a bear in the stars. Sheloved his gift and gave him a light. The light she gavehim shone vivid shades of purple, green, blue, andother magnificent colors. He placed them north of themiddle point of earth. Tenebris called them, theAurora Borealis. As another gift to Aurora, Tenebris decided thatthey should share the sky half and half. Half of the timeher sun would shine, and the other half his stars wouldtwinkle in the dark. Neither of them ever defied thisrule. They lived in peace and harmony. Later, theywere happily married to each other. Never was theresuch a faithful god and goddess. Together they would play games. Tenebris wouldmake a shape with the stars, and Aurora would guesswhat it was supposed to be. During the day theywould do the same thing, only Aurora would makeshapes with the clouds. That is why a lot of peopleclaim to see shapes in the stars or clouds. All starshapes Tenebris made out of love except for Orion’sBelt. They loved each other very much. Together theyhad a child and named her Alysia. Her name meantbond and captivating. She had Aurora's long, flowinghair and Tenebris's dark captivating eyes. Her facewas slim and had defined cheekbones. She wasbeautiful. Alysia linked her parents together evenmore than they already were. She was goddess of thesunrise and sunset. Alysia transitioned day into night. The three of them lived happily in the meadow whereAurora and Tenebris had first met each other.
