About the Course You will work individually and collaboratively on pieces of practical performance work, listening tasks, composition and arrangement alongside some music theory learning.

Your focus, as a musician in this class, should be on making significant improvements to your practical and academic music skills. If you are able to do that then you have succeeded. To help us to measure our success on a national, rather than personal, level, there are a number of Unit and Achievement Standards that you will work towards during the year.

The Standards: How Do We Achieve?

On the next page is a list of standards that are available during the course and the number of credits available for each standard. If you are someone who has already demonstrated significant ability in one, or a number of, these areas you may be able to submit work very soon after study in the particular area begins. This will potentially give you more time to study in an area where you are not so well prepared or there may be opportunity to study at a higher level. This will all be negotiated with your teacher who will direct you in the best possible way.

During significant parts of the course you will be responsible for your own time management. If you are working with other people, the way you manage your time can have an effect on their achievement too. It’s essential that you stick to the assessment schedules or any deadlines you are given in order to guarantee completing a standard. Work not handed in on time may not be assessed and could therefore be awarded NOT ACHIEVE as a grade – no matter how talented you are!

What Next?

Please, please, please remember that you ALWAYS have homework in this subject!!!

Personal rehearsal/practice of AT LEAST 15 minutes per night is an expectation of you being in this class – this is in addition to any research you are doing. That means you have a minimum of 1 hour 45 minutes of homework EVERY week in addition to the

research, listening and theory work you are doing!!. Using suggestions given to you by classroom and instrument teachers during this homework time will ensure you have every

chance of success during performance and written aspects of this course.

Suggestion: Recording yourself on your instrument on tape/mp3 player/cell phone/computer is a great

way of improving your performance technique and instrument sound. It’s amazing the things you can hear in your own playing when you listen back to yourself!

Internal assessment has to be fair. This is a responsibility of both teachers and students. Teachers have to ensure that the tasks they set give a good opportunity for you to demonstrate how well you can meet the Achievement Standard, are comparable to other schools, and that their marking systems are fair. They must also ensure that some students are not unfairly advantaged over others. Students have a responsibility to ensure that the work they produce is their own. To ensure this happens, you need to be aware of the school guidelines as they apply to internally assessed work at St Peter’s College. These are in the ‘NCEA Information’ booklet given to you at the start of the year. In summary, these guidelines cover: 1. Due dates, late work and absences

Except for circumstances clearly beyond your control, late work – even if only one day late – will not be assessed for NCEA. If you think you may have a justifiable reason for late work and seeking an extension, it is your responsibility to apply in writing in advance to your class teacher on the ‘Application for Late Submission of Work’ form on the first appropriate day after the assignment was due (or before if the reason can be anticipated).

2. Appeals against a grade

You have a right to appeal if you think you have been unfairly disadvantaged through the marking process. This must be within THREE days of receiving back the work in question. The first person you talk to about it is your class teacher. If you still disagree, you discuss it with the HOD. If it is still unresolved, you need to complete the ‘Formal Appeal of Marked Work’ form and the NCEA Co-ordinator will investigate.

3. Cheating Before accepting your work for assessment, a teacher must be sure that the work is your own. If cheating is in any way suspected several teachers, including the NCEA Co-ordinator will investigate. If cheating is confirmed, severe disciplinary procedures will result. You will receive no credit for the work. Similarly, if you assist another student to cheat (such as offering them your work to copy), you will be subject to the same action as if you had cheated yourself.

Keeping track of what you do and what you learn…

It is very important that you keep records of all the work you do towards a particular standard as NCEA require proof to be available of the work you have done in preparing for an assessment –

Keep all of your work in an individual file for Music. This HANDBOOK should be the first thing your teacher sees when they open your file followed by your work in clear sections. Your whole file can

then be handed in for marking regularly and your diary (in a 1B5 book) will also be checked…

Yes, I did say ‘diary’! In addition to this workbook you must keep a diary of your ‘Work in Progress’ - write the date and then write a log of the work you did on that date. You may be familiar with the 4 ‘Rs’ method of writing about your tasks and learning. If you don’t have another clear system, use that one as it is easy to work with AND easy for your teacher and moderator (if there is one) to follow your written thoughts and ideas.

Use the ideas and questions below to help you with your diary…

RECORDING…

• what the classwork was or the work you chose to do if it was a ‘self-start’ lesson • include all information that is relevant to the work or refer to handouts/workbooks that were issued

RECORDING can be mind map diagrams, lists or sentences RECOUNTING…

• what actually happened in a practical lesson – did you work well on the tasks you’ve ‘recorded’? • how well were people able to work together and how successful were you in making progress?

RECOUNTING can also include problems that may have been encountered REFLECTING…

• what have you discovered, observed and what have you been able to learn? • What do you need to do next?

REFLECTING is about what you have been able to learn and how you have made progress RESEARCHING…

• which area of study are you going to investigate for homework? Or what are you practicing? • What have you collected that inspires you (poetry, music etc)? - particularly for composition tasks

RESEARCHING should never be empty – you ALWAYS have instrument practice to do!!!
