Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

(Forensic Science)

This Level 3 BTEC National Award is a two year course, equivalent to one A level grade C – A*. The course follows an applied science programme involving Biology, Chemistry and Physics – especially the more practical and applied aspects of those subjects and then moves on to study topics related to Forensic Science. The course is designed to allow you to spend time in the laboratory working on the kind of projects that may be undertaken in science-based industries.

Applied Science (Forensics) is aimed at those students who like science in general, enjoy the practical side of science, want to know more about science based professions, are interested in Forensic Science and can achieve in coursework based tasks. Students need to have a commitment to hard work as the grading is through continuous assessment. It is designed to give learners the knowledge, understanding and technical skills to prepare them for employment in a Forensic Science laboratory or to continue their study in higher education. Students generate portfolios of work which are assessed to give an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction*.

Assignments are set for each of the six modules:

Fundamentals of Science

Working in the Science Industry

Scientific Practical Techniques

Chemical Laboratory Techniques

Forensic Evidence & Collection

Criminal Psychology or Criminology

Applied Science (Forensics) is not only a good choice if you are thinking about taking Applied Science or Science in higher education or are thinking about a science-based career. It can also be used to support Chemistry; Physics; Biology or Psychology A’ Levels.

The course will be delivered using a range of styles, including individual research; speakers; visits and practical sessions. You will also be practicing skills needed for life after school, whether it is career based or higher education based.

AS Course Overview: This year will cover Fundamentals of Science; Scientific Practical

Techniques and Forensic Evidence Collection and Analysis. These units will be assessed by portfolio work throughout the year. A2 Course Overview: This year will cover Chemical Laboratory Techniques,Working in the

Science Industry, Criminology or Criminal Psychology. These units will be assessed by portfolio work throughout the year.

Career Opportunities: These can be found in a wide range of areas specifically including; Forensic Science, Psychology or Criminology but also other Science based careers such as: Pathology; Pharmacy; Dentistry; Animal Husbandry; Biotechnology; Genetic Engineering; Microbiology; Biochemistry; Biophysics; Food Science; Forensic Science; Physiotherapy; Sports Science; Agriculture; Forestry; Public Health; Marine Biology; Conservation; Ecology and Zoology.

Entry Requirements – In order to study Applied Science at A Level you must have at least 5 GCSE A*-C, including English and Maths and at least a C Grade in a Science GCSE or a Pass in

BTEC Science. In addition you must also be able to produce good coursework pieces on time.
