The structure of the qualification The Level 3 Certificate and Diploma in Playwork will be awarded to successful candidates on completion of the required combinations of units. Candidates completing one or more units, rather than the full qualification, will receive a Certificate of Unit Credit (CUC). All units are at Level 3 of the National Occupational Standards. The diagrams below show how each route is achieved.

Level 3 Diploma in Playwork (6978) 8

Guidance notes for assessors Introduction The City & Guilds Diploma in Playwork and all the units within are designed to provide opportunities for candidates to gain accreditation. The emphasis is on ‘learning by doing,’ not on competence. For this reason candidates are required to complete a number of assignments to show their attainment of practical skills. The Diploma requires the completion of 7 units, (6 mandatory units and any other unit from 307-312). The Certificate requires the completion of 4 mandatory units in one of 9 particular pathways. This in turn implies understanding of the theoretical knowledge required to complete a number of activities successfully. The assignments in this guide address the practical activities (What you need to do) of the outcomes that are listed in the Scheme Handbook as well as sampling underpinning knowledge. Completing assignments The assignments can be completed to reflect the candidate’s experience of activities. Each assignment consists of a task or number of tasks, which must be completed and the resultant level of candidate achievement will be graded. Where there is more than one task in an assignment, candidates must pass all tasks within the assignment. Assignments can be completed in any order, there is no need for candidates to begin with Unit 301 and then to work through to Unit 312 in numerical order. Centres will be expected to organise the assignments in a logical order according to the readiness of the candidates and the course timetabling: eg with regard to work placements, visits etc. There are no simulated activities allowed for this award Time limits for assignments Time limits have not been included for each assignment. This is because time is not an assessment criterion in this context. Assignments should however be completed within a realistic time limit, set and agreed by the assessor or tutor. Marking criteria Marking criteria grids are included to assist in the marking and grading of assignments. Examples of evidence for each level have been included in certain circumstances. These are meant to be aids to marking, and are not definitive, therefore do not appear throughout the entire assignment guide. Codes of practice Centres should be aware of the contents of industry codes of practice and follow its recommendations. Centres must be aware of industry requirements and prepare their candidates fully for employment.

Level 3 Diploma in Playwork (6978) 9

Health and safety The importance of safe working practices, the demands of the Health and Safety at Work (HASAW) Act 1974 and the codes of practice associated with the particular Industry must always be stressed. This will include directives from Brussels for the European Union. Candidates have responsibilities for maintaining the safety of others as well as their own. Anyone behaving in an unsafe fashion must be stopped and suitable warning given. A candidate should never be allowed to continue working on an assignment if they have contravened these requirements at any one time. This may seem rather strict but, apart from the potentially unpleasant consequences, each candidate must acquire the habits required for the workplace. Opportunities to repeat tasks within an assignment Candidates who fail a task can retake it and be eligible for Pass only. The assignments are summarised assessments and, other than to gain a Pass, candidates may not retake tasks or assignments to improve grades. It is therefore essential that the assignments are not formative assessment and candidates only attempt the assignments when judged to be fully ready. Should tutors wish to prepare candidates for the assessments, they may devise their own assignments internally and provide feedback on these. If a task needs to be repeated, tutors and Assessors should allow seven days before repeating the task. If the failed task is built upon the results of a previous task, this may also need to be repeated. Marking assignments All assignments consist of tasks and all tasks within an assignment must be passed. Where assignments are made up of more than one practical task, each practical task must be marked and awarded a Pass, Credit or Distinction as shown in the assignment. Where only some of the tasks within an assignment are graded, only these will contribute the grade for the whole assignment. The marks for all the graded tasks are then combined, averaged and converted to give an overall grade for the assignment as follows; The mark that can be awarded for each completed task is: Pass 1 (equivalent to Pass) Credit 2 Distinction 3 To award an overall assignment grade, the number of marks given for each practical task are totalled and then divided by the number of tasks. This gives the average mark and then grade. Average Grade 1 to 1.5 Pass 1.6 to 2.5 Credit 2.6 to 3 Distinction

Recording marks and grades To record candidate marks and overall grade for each completed assignment, Assessors should enter details onto the appropriate Assignment Mark Sheet, which should be retained for verification purposes. Verification of assignments By using marking checklists verifiers can check that evidence for an assignment is complete and can ensure that allocation of marks has been fair and beyond dispute. Assessors must ensure that candidates understand why a particular grade has been given for the award. It is for this reason that City & Guilds requires the signature of both the Assessor and the candidate on the final award mark sheet. If a candidate’s work is selected for verification, samples of work must be made available to the appointed external verifier. The external verifier will ensure that: • the internal verifier is undertaking his/her responsibilities • the internal verifier is given prompt, accurate and constructive feedback on centre operations • a report is written on centre activities for City and Guilds. Entry for assessment and certification Candidates should be registered via the Walled Garden or using Form S at least 28 days before any assessment.. Results of assignments should be submitted in the form of grades via the Walled Garden or by using Form S. Only those components which have been achieved should be included. Each component number is entered, followed by P (Pass), C (Credit) or D (Distinction) to indicate the grade the candidate has achieved. Support for Assessors Assessors / Tutors are recommended to consult with the suggested good practice and suggested resources that are at the end of each unit in the Qualifications Handbook.
