An aerial view of the new Rosanna Station when trains started running again in early May 2018.

The Victorian Government has removed two dangerous and congested level crossings along the Hurstbridge line, built a brand new Rosanna Station, and duplicated the single section of track between Heidelberg and Rosanna. This will make communities safer and get commuters in Melbourne’s north east home sooner.

We’ve completed the construction blitz and our sites in Rosanna, Heidelberg and Alphington have been transformed.

To improve the reliability of services on the Hurstbridge line we've duplicated 1.2km of track. Trains are now running in both directions between Heidelberg and Rosanna for the first time, using the new Burgundy Street bridge and Darebin Street underpass.

The new Rosanna Station has opened and we thank locals for their patience over the past six months. The Lower Plenty Road and Beetham Parade intersection has also been upgraded and improved, and the boom gates are gone forever.

In Alphington, the level crossing has been removed and the rail line has been lowered under Grange Road, with new

pedestrian bridges at Hamilton Street and Fulham Road nearly complete.

The Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade is nearing completion with works wrapping up in mid-2018.

ISSUE #7 – MAY 2018

ROSANNA UPDATEAfter 48 days of non-stop works, the station precinct in Rosanna has been completely transformed. The new Rosanna Station is now operational, with trains running on the rail viaduct over Lower Plenty Road.

As many local people will know, there’s been a lot to see in Rosanna. Our giant 750-tonne crawler crane worked around the clock to lift the 67 concrete beams that formed the 32-metre-long rail viaduct. The crane was also used to lift 11 prefabricated buildings that

are the new Rosanna Station. Hundreds of locals have enjoyed a front seat view of the works, with our team hosting information sessions at various viewing points around the project site as construction took place.

Works are continuing until mid-2018 to complete the station public spaces, car parks and changes along Turnham Avenue. Once construction is complete, landscaping will follow, including new public open space.

What’s coming up in Rosanna in mid-2018:

• Works to reinstate the northbound lane on Turnham Avenue and complete construction of the forecourt at Rosanna Station

• Completing station parking

• Construction of a new shared user path between Rosanna Station and Ellesmere Parade

• Construction of new open space at the corner of Beetham and Ellesmere parades and Lower Plenty Road.

Hard at work on the new elevated platforms in preparation for the reopening of Rosanna Station.

Did you know?

Our 750-tonne crawler crane had an average speed of 1.65km per hour, which is slower than a house spider! (1.8km per hour)

Super T beams were used in the new rail viaduct, weighing up to 50 tonnes each

Traffic to return to two-way on Ellesmere Parade.

Vehicles will only be able to turn left in and out of Ellesmere Parade.

New signalised shared user path crossing will be installed on the west side of the Turnham Avenue/Lower Plenty Road intersection to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross Lower Plenty Road to access Rosanna Station.

New shared user path leading to Rosanna Station from Ellesmere Parade.

Additional signalised pedestrian crossing on Beetham Parade where it meets Lower Plenty Road, and on the eastern side of the Lower Plenty Road/Beetham Parade intersection.

Current pedestrian crossing on Lower Plenty Road, just east of Bellevue Avenue, is being moved to align with the west side of the intersection of Beetham Parade and Lower Plenty Road.

Pedestrian crossing on Beetham Parade, just south of Lower Plenty Road, has been removed.

Existing pedestrian crossing and traffic movements will remain at the Turnham Avenue/Lower Plenty Road intersection.

Service lane that was formerly coming off Beetham Parade is being relocated to come off Lower Plenty Road.

Upgrading local accessLower Plenty Road has been upgraded to improve access for vehicles and pedestrians, with the addition of traffic lights at various locations and levelling the road underneath the new rail bridge.

Traffic lights have been placed at the Beetham Parade and Lower Plenty Road intersection.

The slip lane entry to Rosanna Village has been relocated to come off Lower Plenty Road, with a new public space to open alongside Beetham Parade.

HEIDELBERG UPDATEWorks in Heidelberg are almost complete and there’s been remarkable changes in the rail corridor between Heidelberg and Rosanna stations.

During our time here, we’ve built a new underpass alongside the existing Darebin Street tunnel, duplicated the rail bridge over Burgundy Street, widened the rail corridor to make way for the second set of rail tracks and installed new retaining walls behind Manton Street Reserve and on either side of Burgundy Street bridge.

To say that our project has been big would be an understatement. The enormity of our works has

been evident throughout the major milestones, from the breakthrough of the 69-metre underpass at Darebin Street, to installing the new Burgundy Street bridge.

Passengers travelling to the city on the Hurstbridge line now ride on duplicated tracks over the new Burgundy Street rail bridge, through the Darebin Street underpass and stop at the new Rosanna Station!

Did you know?More than 10 kilometres of new track has been installed as part of the Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade.

The Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade supported 1,000 jobs during peak construction.

Landscaping works to come Now that the track has been duplicated, the project team will be landscaping around Burgundy Street to recreate the previous tree line beside the railway line. These works will include a small public forecourt on the northern side of Burgundy Street.

The soft landscaping aims to extend and enhance Heidelberg’s leafy character, using native species from the area. These plants are most suited to the growing conditions and also provide habitat for fauna.

The small public forecourt will create a recreational space for the community, and include natural stone paving, seating and a new Pin Oak specimen tree.

On the southern side, there is limited space available for landscaping opportunities, however, new trees

and planting will be included, as well as the provision of a new bus stop and asphalt paving under the new rail bridge.

On the south-west corner of Darebin and Hawdon streets, anti-throw screens will be installed to protect the rail line, and planting will consist of low-maintenance plants and paved surfaces.

GRANGE UPDATEThe level crossing at Grange Road is now a distant memory.

The new rail line is open with trains travelling under Grange Road for the first time. Thanks for your patience while Grange Road was closed – we were able to excavate 30,000 cubic metres of soil and install 17 bridge beams, weighing up to 40 tonnes each, for the new road bridge.

The two new pedestrian bridges are in place ready to open once the shared user paths are complete, improving connectivity for the local community.

With the Chandler Highway Upgrade project due to be completed by the end of 2018, this stretch of road will be completely transformed.

Upcoming worksWhile the level crossing has now been removed, you will still see some works happening over the coming months.

Landscaping and shared user paths

Work will start on landscaping along Wingrove Street and Ravenscourt Place, and installing new walking and cycling paths.

Wingrove StreetWorks will continue to take place to asphalt, install curbs and line-mark Wingrove Street. Following on from this, Wingrove Street will be returned to a two-way street with on-street parking reinstated on the north side of the road.

Site officesThe site offices located on the VicTrack land off Hamilton Street will be removed, and the land handed back to VicTrack. The temporary traffic lights on the corner of Heidelberg and Grange roads, which were used for heavy vehicle access, will also be removed.

Ravenscourt PlaceThroughout the construction blitz, work has taken place to install a drainage system within the rail trench to pump out water from rainfall and

prevent flooding. At road level on Ravenscourt Place, a bio-retention treatment area will be used to help improve the quality of stormwater run-off from the trench.

Ravenscourt Place will be improved with a range of landscaping treatments including a mix of rocky, mulched and planted garden beds, outdoor seating, decking, trees and concrete stairs from the new pedestrian bridge.

Additionally, the road will be resurfaced and vehicles will be able to use Ravenscourt Place to make left and right turns onto Grange Road.
