Analog outputs
The Prolevel transmitter provides astandard 4 to 20 mA signal per channel(switchable to 0 to 20 mA). Dependingupon calibration, this is proportional toeither level or volume. The start and endof the signal range can be programmedas required.
Relay outputs
The Prolevel is equipped with fiverelays, each with a potential-free changeover contact.• Two sets of two limit relays with
adjustable switch point and hysteresis.

System integration
Personal computer
Transmitters equipped with an RS-485interface can be connected to a personalcomputer via the RS-485 bus. Ameasuring system then comprises:• Several Prolevel measuring points
(or other units with RS-485interface)
• PC connection (RS-485 interface cardor a RS-232C/RS-485 converter)
Depending on the system topology, up to25 transmitters can be connected atvarious points on the bus, which may beup to 3937 feet (1200 m) long.
Process control system
The Prolevel can be easily and eco-nomically integrated into existingindustrial process control systems.Individual Rackbus RS-485 buses, eachwith up to 25 transmitters, are connectedto the Rackbus via the FXA 675 interfacecard (exceptionally via Monorack RS-485). A gateway connects the Rackbusto standard supervisory systems such asPROFIBUS, FIP or MODBUS.

Operating principle Capacitance measurement
The probe and vessel wall (or counterelectrode) form a capacitor with adefined capacitance which is low whenthe probe is in air. As soon as materialcovers the probe, a larger capacitance isformed between the probe and thevessel wall while the resistance betweenthe probe and vessel wall becomessmaller. The parallel circuit of capacitorand resistor (i.e. the impedance) ismeasured.
Signal processing
The Prolevel provides the sensors withpower over an un-shielded 2-wire cable.Every sensor supplies an interferencefree, level proportional, pulse frequencymodulated (PFM) signal via the samecable. The measured value derived fromthis signal is displayed at the transmitterand output as a standard 0/4 to 20 mAsignal. It may also be read by aCommulog VU 260 Z handheld terminalor passed on to a supervisory system viathe optional Rackbus RS-485 interface.
Function monitoring
The Prolevel transmitter monitors thecomplete measuring system from thesensor to the outputs. On fault condi-tions:• The alarm relay LED lights• The current falls to -10%, rises
to +110%, or holds the last value(programmable)
• The limit relays respond according tothe fail-safe mode selected orde-energize (programmable)
• The alarm relay de-energizes

Capacitance measuring principle
Simple linearization
A linearization is made by entering avessel characteristic which describes therelationship between the height (h) andvolume (V) of a vessel. The most common application, ahorizontal cylinder, is pre-programmedin the transmitter. A linearization tablefor any other vessel shape, e.g., a tankwith a conical outlet, can be simplyprogrammed by entering up to 30reference points.

Installation Mounting
The NEMA 4 housing is wall-mounted orpost-mounted (1 or 2” pipe) indoors oroutdoors. When mounting outdoors, anall weather protection hood is recom-mended. Ambient temperature limits ofthe Prolevel should be observed forproper operation of the electronics.Refer to Accessories, page 13.
Hazardous areas, sensors
Probes and sensors with appropriatecertification may be installed in explo-sion hazardous areas. The transmittermust always be installed outside thehazardous area. All local regulationsconcerning installation must be ob-served.
Electrical connection Terminal strip
The terminal strip, suitable for cablecross-sections up to 18 AWG (two-conductor, non-shielded), is located in aseparate connection compartment. in thelower portion of the housing. The cableentries are prestamped for easy removal(5 x Pg 16, 4 x Pg 13.5 at the bottom,4 x Pg 16 in the rear).

Electrical isolation
Current output, relay outputs, powersupply, sensor input and bus inputs areelectrically isolated from each other(safe isolation to DIN/VDE 0160). Bothsensor inputs are intrinsically safe andelectrically isolated from each other.
Overvoltage protection
The external overvoltage protection unitHAW 262 for signal outputs is recom-mended for protecting the transmitterfrom votage peaks, especially whenmounted in the field. The overvoltageprotection unit HAW 261 should be usedto protect against main power voltagepeaks. Contact Endress+Hauser foradditional information.
Electromagnetic compatibility
The interference immunity of theProlevel has been checked to a teststrength of 10 V/m. The signal deviationover the total frequency range of 10 kHzto 1 GHz is always less than 1%. Overwide frequency ranges, the deviation issignificantly lower.
Bus installation Rackbus RS-485
Normally, up to 25 Prolevel transmitterscan be connected to the bus. The actualnumber depends on the topology andconditions of operation. The busconnection requires:• Connecting cable (2-wire, twisted and
shielded)• Cable length maximum, 3937 feet
(1200 m)
Bus address
Every transmitter is given a uniqueaddress which is configured at the DIPswitches at the terminal strip.
