Levels of Organization
All life is organized into a number of different levels
These levels range from very small to very large
Let’s start off small…
Cells
basic unit of life
specialize to do different jobs
microscopic
EX: blood cell, skin cell, chicken egg
Tissues
groups of cells working together
specialized function
materials around the cells are also part of the tissue
EX: red blood cells, muscle
Organs
two or more tissues working together
specific job is performed
EX: stomach, heart, lungs, skin, stem, roots
Organ Systems
organs working together in groups with specific jobs
organs in an organ system depend on one another
EX: respiratory system, digestive system
Organisms
anything that can live on its own
unicellular - made of one cell
multicellular - made of many cells
EX: moose, Darwin, rabbit, cactus, mold
Population
all organisms of the same species living together in one place
EX: All the penguins currently living in Antarctica
Community
all the populations of various species living together in one place
this includes ALL living things, not just animals
EX: The rabbits, grass, and trees in the forest.
Ecosystem
all the living and non-living things in any given area
EX: All the fish, water, rocks, coral, and sand in a reef.
