Levels of Organizationof Living Things

AppleIn what level of organization does

the apple belong?

Tree = Organism

Organisms are made of a group of what?

Flower Parts = Organ System

Organ systems are made of a group of what?

Parts of Tree = Organs• Roots• Leaves• Stems• Ovaries = Fruit!!!! Ah ha

Apple is an Organ

• The apple is the ripened ovary of the apple tree

• Let’s keep going. The organ is made of what?

Plant Tissue

Tissues are made of a group of what?

Plant Cell

Cells are made of a group of what?

Fructose MoleculeThe Sugar in Fruit

Molecules are made up of a group of what?

Question: What atoms of elements do you see in the fructose ring structure?

Let’s EAT!!!

• Take a bite of your apple and answer the questions in your journal.

• What do you taste? What observations can you make about the apple?

• Why would you eat an apple?

ENERGY

• We eat to get energy to live and THRIVE!!!!!!

• What else do we eat?– Meat=Protein– Nuts= Fats or lipids– Fruits/veggies/bread= Carbohydrates

Biomolecules

4 Biomolecules or Macromolecules

• Carbohydrates• Proteins• Lipids or Fats• Nucleic Acids

• Let’s Investigate Each Group

“Houston We Have a Problem”

• You are a doctor at a clinic in Round Rock and a patient has come to you with a problem.

• The patient is 25 and eats healthy(including proteins, fats or lipids, and carbohydrates) in order to maintain good health, but they are failing to thrive.

• After you examine the patient you find that they are malnourished.

• Use your understanding of biology and any data collected over the course of the next several days to propose three explanations for this person’s condition.

• We will revisit this scenario at the end of this unit.

This is a molecule of fructose or sugar from an apple.

Sugar is a carbohydrate.

Let’s Review
