uitarist/Composer/Educator Rob Levit is a multi-directional artist whose work has been distinguished by thedepth of its originality and the breadth of its interest. Whether in a mainstream jazz, chamber music, experimental electronic or

rock music context, Levit’s signature performance style is defined by asinging guitar tone, dynamically engaging the audience and a fearlessgroup approach to improvised music.

A five-time consecutive recipient of the Maryland State Arts CouncilIndividual Artist Award and the first recipient of the Doris Duke/ChamberMusic America Jazz Composition Award (along with Andrew Hill, Jane IraBloom, Marcus Roberts and several others), Levit’s compositional

approach, Symbol System, establishes the primacy ofmelody while creating some-times quirky and demandingrhythms within complex original forms. His ensemblesare “tight-knit and democrat-ic units” where there is plen-

ty of room for individual exploration within an evolving group dynamic. He has composed over fifty original works, including the JuliusHemphill/Jazz Composers’ Alliance first prize winner RUBICON. His compo-sitions have appeared on twelve commercially available compact discs.

As an educator (M.M. New England Conservatory, B.A. University ofVirginia), Levit has been an Artist-In-Residence or given workshops/con-certs at the University of Virginia, Collegiate School (Richmond VA), YouthEmpowerment Station (Richmond VA), Waldorf School (Baltimore MD)and the Community Colleges of Baltimore County. In addition, he estab-lished a jazz guitar studio at Loyola College and is a private instructor.

Complementing his musical activities, Levit is engaged in the pursuit andstudy of human creativity and potential. He is an active and publishedessayist/poet and visual artist.

Rob Levit is inspired by improvisingartists like Sam Rivers, PatMetheny, Ornette Colemanand Charles Mingus whoestablished their own com-positional and improvisa-tional identities whilemaintaining an abidingbelief in the validity ofall forms of musical andartistic expression.Studying and integratingthe concepts of Rumi,Wallace Stevens, BelaBartok, Paul Klee andarchitect Steven Holl hasgiven Levit a musical andartistic approach that tran-scends the ordinary and creates asound and creative world that is allhis own.
