Read This First■ Setup will install the files necessary for the CheckCite™ software and the

LEXLink™ feature. The majority of the files are common to the two products. The installer will have the ability to choose which access options will beavailable to the user for each product. This will allow the installer to “hide”a particular product from users.

■ Note for Windows 2000/NT® workstations: If system files must be updated, administrator privileges are required to run the workstation setup program. It is recommended that you update these system files prior to running theworkstation setup program. A list of system files is provided in the sectionon “Using Third-Party Push Products.”

■ The CheckCite software uses the default method of connecting to the Internetto access the LexisNexis™ services. If you do not have access to the Internet, thesoftware will not work.

■ The Workstation Setup program (ccwss.exe) will run automatically for single-user installations. For multi-user installations, the Workstation Setup programmust be run on, or its modifications “pushed” out to, each machine, for eachuser. If you use a product that “pushes” registry entries and files, please readthe section “Using Third-Party Push Products.”

■ If you are installing a multi-user version of the software, and at least one ofthe workstations is running Microsoft¨® Internet Explorer 3.x, please readthe information on wininet.dll in “Communications” before running theWorkstation Setup program.

■ To integrate the CheckCite software with the Clival32 client validationprogram, you must have version 7.1.2 of clival32.exe installed. That versionis provided on the CD, in the Clival32 directory. Instructions are providedin the clival32.txt file, also found in the Clival32 directory.

■ If you are installing a multi-user version of the software, please read the sectionon Directory Privileges.

■ If a user receives the error “Cannot create job-information workspace” whenstarting up the application, the probable cause is insufficient disk space on theworkstation, or in the user’s personal directory.

■ The odma32.dll file is now installed to the program directory only.

■ ZENworks™ users: Tests run at LexisNexis indicate that version 3.2 or aboveof the Novell client is required to successfully “push” the CheckCite programusing ZENworks.

■ It is highly recommended that you disable any anti-virus software beforerunning the workstation setup program.

■ If the Startup directory for Microsoft Word is read-only, the workstation setupprogram will not be able to install the toolbar for LEXLink and/or CheckCite.

Workstation SetupThe Workstation Setup program (ccwss.exe) must be run for each userbefore that user can use either the CheckCite software or the LEXLinkfeature. The Workstation Setup program is a non-interactive, silentsetup program. The user only has to double-click on the ccwss.exefile, found in the program directory. One reboot may be required ifDCOM must be installed, or if system files requiring upgrade arelocked. The user should close all applications prior to running thissetup program.

By default, the CheckCite software will start up automatically whenthe workstation setup program is finished. You can control thisbehavior in the setup.iss file by modifying the “start checkcite afterinstall=yes/no” setting. If StartUp Group was selected as an AccessOption, the LEXLink feature will be initialized automatically, andits icon will appear in the systray.

Using Third-Party Push ProductsThe following are recommendations for using third-party“push” products such as SMS Installer and ZENworks with theLexisNexis Citation Tools products:

Program files shared on network:

1. Run the setup.exe to install the program files on the network.

2. Advertise the CheckCite icon for the ccwss.exe file to each user. The ccwss.exe will run the workstation setup program, ifnecessary, before opening the CheckCite program. If theworkstation setup program runs, the user may be prompted toreboot the machine one time. The single reboot will be necessaryif DCOM95 must be installed and/or the system DLLs beingupgraded are in memory (see list below).

Program files for single-user version on local machine:

1. Select a machine on which to generate the script, and startcapturing activity.

2. Run the setup.exe to install the program files.

3. Run the workstation setup program (ccwss.exe). A single rebootwill be required if DCOM95 must be installed and/or the systemDLLs being upgraded are in memory (see list below).

4. Stop capturing activity.

5. Run the script on other machines with identical operatingsystems only.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each set of machines with unique operatingsystems. For example, if your machines have a mix of Windows95 and Windows 98, you must follow these steps once for theWindows 95 machines, then again for the Windows 98 machines.

Page 13: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

13

Program files for multi-user version on local machine:

1. Select a machine on which to generate the script, and startcapturing activity.

2. Run the setup.exe to install the program files.

3. Stop capturing activity.

4. Run the script once on each machine.

5. “Push” the CheckCite icon for the ccwss.exe file to eachdesktop. The ccwss.exe will run the workstation setup program,if necessary, before opening the CheckCite program. If theworkstation setup program runs, the user may be prompted toreboot the machine one time. The single reboot will be necessaryif DCOM95 must be installed and/or the system DLLs beingupgraded are in memory (see list below).

Note: Though it is possible to capture both the installationof the program files and the workstation setup, it is notrecommended for two reasons:1) the program files only have to be installed once on each

machine;2) if you use an environmental variable in the path for

the Personal Directory, or choose to append the user’sNetwork Logon ID to the path for the Personal Directory, the environmental variable or Network Logon ID will beconverted for that user during the capture and distributedto all other users.

Upgrade of System DLLs:

The workstation setup program will upgrade the following DLLs ifnecessary. If one of these DLLs is locked, then the workstation setupprogram will prompt the user to reboot the machine in order for thechanges to take effect. If DCOM95 must be installed, the workstationsetup program will only prompt the user to reboot once for all changesto take effect.

Page 15: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

15

CommunicationsWininet.dllThe CheckCite software requires version 4.0 or above of thewininet.dll to connect to the LexisNexis services. Versions 4.0 andabove are not backward-compatible with versions 3.x and below. IfMicrosoft Internet Explorer 3.x is installed on a workstation, theCheckCite workstation setup program will install a wininet.dll(version 4.72.3110) in the program directory. This will necessitatefull rights to the program directory until wininet.dll is installed there. After that, the program directory can be set to read-only.

If your workstations have a mix of Internet Explorer 3.x and InternetExplorer 5.x, then those workstations should access separate installa-tions of the software. Workstations with Internet Explorer 3.x shouldrun the CheckCite executable from a directory that contains thewininet.dll distributed with the CheckCite software. The wininet.dllfile should not exist in the same directory as the CheckCite executablefor workstations with Internet Explorer 5.x.

If your workstations have a mix of Internet Explorer 3.x and InternetExplorer 4.x, follow normal procedures.

Page 16: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

16

TroubleshootingIf you receive the following error message attempting to create areport, check below for the possible cause and solution:

Error submitting search request to the LexisNexis service.

Possible Cause The CheckCite software uses the samecommunications files as Internet Explorer. However, if you are not using InternetExplorer, it may be necessary to configureyour connection to the Internet. You can dothis using one of the following methods:

Internet Options icon in the Control Panel

Internet Explorer’s Connection Wizard

(Microsoft Windows 95 only) The InternetConnection Wizard provided on theLexisNexis Citation Tools CD, in theConnection Wizard directory. You can runthis configuration program from the CD.

Solution Using one of the three options above, configure the connection on one PC; thencopy the appropriate registry settings to anyother machine that uses the same connectionmethod.

Note: The workstation setup program installs the requiredcommunications files, if necessary. The workstation setupprogram does not install the Internet Explorer browser itself. Itis not necessary to have Internet Explorer installed to run theCheckCite program.

Possible Cause By default, the CheckCite software’scommunications conform to the HTTP 1.1standard. Some proxy servers do not yetsupport this version.

Solution Run commtest.exe, located in the CheckCiteprogram directory to test the communications(see the following section for more information).

!

Page 17: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

17

Communications Tester (commtest.exe)Use this utility to step through the sequential stages of a typicalCheckCite session and identify any errors.

Step 1 Checks the versions of the key communicationsDLLs + wininet and shlwapi. The base versions ofthese DLLs must match (i.e. wininet 4.x only workswith shlwapi 4.x and wininet 5.x only works withshlwapi 5.x).

Step 2 Connects to the CheckCite server and testsauthentication of a userid/password. Note thatyou do not have to enter an id/password, so youare not charged for this test.

Step 3 Tests submitting a sample session to the CheckCiteserver, conforming to the HTTP 1.1 standard. If thisstage fails, the program will retry conforming with theHTTP 1.0 standard. If that attempt is successful, thenthe program will change a registry setting so thatfuture communications will conform to the HTTP 1.0standard. You do not have to run this program onother workstations. There is a file (UsePost_ON.reg)containing the modified setting on the LEXIS-NEXISCitation Tools CD, in the Communications TestUtility directory. You can push this file to theother workstations.

Step 4 Tracks completion of the sample requests.

Step 5 Tests transfer of the results back to your system.

Step 6 Completes the test and disconnects from theCheckCite server.

Note: You can also initiate the default Internet ConnectionWizard from within this utility by clicking the ConnectionWizard button.

!

Page 18: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

18

Document Management SystemsThe CheckCite software can integrate with document managementsystems using the ODMA standard. When a user clicks on the Browsebutton on the New Session screen, ODMA looks for a Default key inthe registry to determine which DLL should be called for the documentmanagement system currently in use.

If you receive the following error message, check the scenarios belowfor the possible cause and solution:

Specified DMS is not registered with ODMA.

Scenario 1

You have an ODMA-compliant document management system.

Probable Cause You have more than one Default key, or noneat all.

Solution Run the ODMA utility (CCODMA.EXE)found in the CheckCite program directory. This utility will allow you to assign a specificdocument management system to ODMA.

Scenario 2

You do not have an ODMA-compliant document management system.

Probable Cause A default key exists in the registry, so ODMAthinks a compliant DMS exists. This happensif you are using GroupWise, but have thedocument management functionality disabled.

Solution Disable user access to the DMS. To do this:

1) Start the CheckCite software;2) Select Preferences from the File menu;3) Click on the Global Preferences tab; and4) Remove the check from the “Allow user

access to DMS” setting.

Page 19: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

19

Merging DictionariesUsers of the LexisNexis Citation Tools software are able toadd alternative abbreviations for reporters to the dictionary. Ifyou upgrade to a later version of the LexisNexis Citation Toolssoftware, a newer version of the dictionary is installed also. Adictionary merge utility (mergdict.exe) is provided to move the user-added entries to the newer version of the dictionary. The utility islocated in the MDB subdirectory of the Dictionary directory.

All you have to do is start the utility by double-clicking on themergdict.exe file. The utility does not prompt for any otherinformation, but will display the number of entries copied over,if any were found, at the end.

Page 20: LexisNexis Citation Tools Installation Instructions

20

Directory Privileges forMulti-User InstallationsDuring installation, you are prompted for a Program directory,Dictionary directory, and Personal directory. The Setup program thencreates the necessary subdirectories under the Program and Dictionarydirectories. For more information on these directories, see the Glossary.

The global option sets and dictionary files are shared by all users ofthe CheckCite software and the LEXLink feature. Global option setscan be created, deleted and/or modified from within the CheckCiteprogram. The dictionary files can also be modified from within theCheckCite software or the LEXLink feature. For more informationon these files, see the Glossary.

The user privileges to the Program directory, as well as itssubdirectories, can be read-only for all users.

The user privileges to the Dictionary directory, as well as itssubdirectories, can also be read-only for all users, with the followingexceptions:
