• Any time you are delivering information provide insights not info.

• The hierarchy: data -> information -> knowledge -> wisdom

• Value added deliverables are the way to go. Can’t I just find the info and pass it on? Nope!

• To make information irresistible you have to turn it into insights and make it decision-ready.

Top Tips for Turning Information into Insights (MLW)

• Tip #1: Start with the basics: listen and learn like reference interviews and project follow ups.

• Tip #2: Keep it short and simple like a brief executive summary.

• Tip #3: A picture is worth a lot. We are becoming an increasingly visual world.

• Some tools for charts/graphs: Excel chart wizard, Chartgizmo.com, DIYChart.com

• Some tools for diagrams: SmartArt, Gliffy.com, SmartDraw.com

• Some tools for data maps: Microsoft MapPoint, Click2map

• Also think about word clouds, a matrix, timelines

• Don’t forget about adding images

• Tip #4: Bring in the power tools.

• Different approaches to analysis: SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats), PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technical Factors), Timeline

• Tip #5: Create a report toolkit. Make it easy for yourself.

• Create templates – Word, PowerPoint, chart gallery, map gallery. Brand it.

• Put info in formats that are usable: FAQs, issue briefs, PowerPoint, Cheat sheets.

• Ask questions about the position of others, not to find where you might “catch them” in a mistake, but to fully understand their reasoning and data.
