LGBTQ People in Albania LGBTQ Albanians do exist! Hidden (discriminatory laws, prison) Often experience social isolation and lack of
acceptance Social discrimination—fear of discrimination against
them and against their families
Social context Few social services (Stopaids, substance abuse, youth
services) No governmental services Few civil society organizations that include LGBT
issues in their mission Have anti-discrimination law (covers sexual
orientation and gender identity) No other legal support One visible gay person (Klodi from Big Brother
Albania)
Consequences Social situation is very difficult. As a result:• Some people cope with the situation, making
decisions about where and to whom it is safe to be open
• Some people want to leave Albania• Some people abuse drugs • Some people have considered suicide
