A Message from the PresidentI am delighted to welcome all members, guests and visitors to Leverstock Green Cricket Club during 008. It is a very special year for the club as 008 is our centenary year. A number of enjoyable and prestigious events will take place and we are looking forward to entertaining old friends and former club members as well as many other visitors to our club. I do hope that it will be a year to remember!

Last season was an excellent one for the club. Three of the four Saturday teams were promoted in the Saracens Hertfordshire League. At the League’s annual dinner and presentation evening in October, at Beales Hotel in Hatfield, Leverstock Green was officially congratulated as being the second most successful club in the county in 007. This is the first time that the club has achieved such an accolade. The First Eleven, under the inspiring captaincy of David Tyson, was too strong for the other clubs in the division and were runaway champions of Division Three. With the loss of some key players notably the Aussie, Dan Plamenac, the first target of the team for the new season will be that of consolidation in Division Two. The Second Eleven, after back-to-back promotions, found life difficult in Division Five. Relegation to Division Six was beckoning prior to an administrative reprieve. I wish the squad well and hope that they may establish themselves in this challenging division in 008.Following a hard-fought campaign, the Third Eleven gained promotion to Division Ten after having to win the last game of the season against Met Police II, while the Fourth Eleven, in its inaugural league season, defied the odds to win promotion to Division Twelve. The team’s most memorable victory was away against Hitchin III, the previously unbeaten leaders of the division.

6

Page 7: LGCC Fixture Book 2008

Just before the end of the season, the players of the teams enjoyed two Saturday evenings celebrating their successes, when much bubbly and cocktails were consumed, songs were sung and tall stories were told.On a sad note, two long-standing members of the club, Anna Brown and Ian Lloyd, passed away in 007. We shall remember them at the club and again, we send our condolences to their families.Cricket Week was again successful, although the weather was not as kind to us as in recent years. However, it was gratifying to see how many people participated in the matches and evening activities. Friday of the Week was especially successful and it was wonderful to see hundreds of people on the Green at the end of the game and to witness their enjoyment of the post-match entertainment. The Annual Dinner was also a great success and was very enjoyable. The concept of the marquee adjacent to the club-house was a very popular one and I do hope that it may be continued into the future.Youth cricket continued to flourish for the club and our teams of young players achieved notable successes, many victories, much enjoyment and mass participation. The high point of the season was that of the Under 15s team reaching the final of the prestigious “Peter Wright Trophy”, following on from the success of the Under 10s in reaching the Hertfordshire Final in 006. The greatest achievement for the club, however, is that of the momentum that has been established and the growing pool of well-coached, enthusiastic young players. This augurs well for next season and beyond. The Club continues to be strongly supported by our social members. It was also very pleasing that the club-house could be so attractively refurbished this year, to the benefit of all our members and guests.I wish you all a successful and enjoyable cricket season as well as an unforgettable centenary year.

Brian Coulshed

A Message from the Club CaptainFirstly can I welcome you all to what is a very special year in our history. Leverstock Green passes three figures this year and becomes 100 years old. Our Centenary year will be an ongoing celebration of all that’s good, past and present in our club so make your contribution to this year count. I spoke last year of 007 being a transitional year for our club and it turned out to be a whole lot more than that! On paper it was the most successful year in our history, but in fact it turned out to be a season that surprised all of us in the end. It was a season where three of our four teams were promoted to a higher league and this season promises a whole lot more. Our 1st X1 carried all before them last year and captured the real essence of our club in a season where contributions from our younger, developing cricketers equally matched the contribution made by our older and more mature cricketers. Dave Tyson’s team did us proud last year and I am confident that the same will be the case this year. I would also like to personally welcome Brent Mullet from Australia who will be our overseas player this year and comes to support a 1st team in excellent shape after last year’s exploits. Brent has an outstanding cricketing CV and as soon as he gets used to playing in the mud he should do very well in England! Our nd X1 struggled in a tough league last year but retained their division 5 status in the end and under the new management team of Keith Glasscoe as captain and Mike Wood as vice-captain I am hopeful that, with the help of some of our best young prospects, things will get better this year. There is no reason that Keith’s team shouldn’t consolidate its position in Division 5 and build for future years. Brian Coulshed steps down after managing and driving forward the 3rd team cause for many years. His contribution to our club's current position and status in Hertfordshire is immeasurable. Mike Parkes and Graham Evans become the 3rd team

8

Page 9: LGCC Fixture Book 2008

captain and vice-captain and I am sure Brian as second vice-captain will be there to help and support where necessary. Tony Williams also steps down from immediate captaincy to become Raj Mehta’s vice-captain in our newly promoted 4th X1. The effort that Tony mustered at times last year just to get a team on the pitch, let alone promoted, deserves recognition as a remarkable feat. I am also pleased to say that Dayle Littlejohn has taken over from Dave Tyson as Sunday captain. Dayle will be eighteen this year and is one of the best young cricketers and potential captains we have in our club. To have a youngster as captain on Sundays is an exciting development for us as a club and I am sure he will do very well. Good luck to everyone in their new positions for 008.Brad Klosterman had an amazing year last year as a cricketer and with the ongoing help of senior and junior cricketers continues to lay the foundations for the future with our developing juniors section. With Mike Parkes’ under 15’s nearly winning a cup and great strength in depth at all other levels it was a great year for junior cricket as well. We had nearly 80 juniors on our books last year and interest already this year is very strong. I believe we are now producing really good, well-coached youngsters who will help secure our future for the long term. Well done to the coaching team and good luck this year.My message for this very special year is really the same as last year. Be mindful of that fact that we are all guests in this beautiful theatre of sport and we should treat it accordingly. We must welcome and respect our opposition at all levels and make Leverstock Green a place that people want to visit and where they look forward to returning.Good luck to everyone this year: sporting, organising, managing and supporting. Let’s make it a Centenary year to remember on and off the pitch.Best wishes,

Danny Murray

Junior Section Season 2007007 was another successful year for Leverstock Green with all teams confirming that we are a club on the up. The club’s Under 10s again led the way finishing runners up in the North West League. The remaining 5 teams can be proud of their efforts with all finishing in the top half of their respective leagues. The Under 15’s also made it to the final of the Peter Wright Trophy and put up a valiant effort before eventually losing by 3 wickets. Congratulations to these boys on beating some of the biggest clubs in the county. We again lose a number of Under 15’s to the senior ranks and I would like to wish them every success. The improvement in our juniors came through this year as many of our past colts helped in the promotion of our Third and Fourth teams. I look forward to seeing them progress even further through to our First and Second XI in years to come.

We have seen an unprecedented number of colts making it through to the final district and area training. Leverstock Green is represented in Under 11’s – Johnny Pitts (Area) and Daniel Lake (District) - Under 13’s – Joe Watkins, Matthew Lake, Sam Revell and Tom Callingham (District) and Under 15 - Callum Pilgrim (District)Congratulations to all those who won individual awards last season. The Colt of the Year award went to Ben Parkes (photo left).

Under 10's

Page 19: LGCC Fixture Book 2008

008 will again see the club field 6 teams and hopefully break the 100 player mark in what is Leverstock Green’s centenary year. This season will see us running teams in Under 10, 11, 1, two Under 13 and Under 15. Connells, the Estate Agents, have joined with Leverstock Green to become sponsors of our colts section. This year the Ashes will be played on the 0th July 008. It will again see 5 matches played for the trophy, along with the double wicket competitions, bowling competitions and some one off events to celebrate this year’s centenary. Last year's event was evenly poised before one of the biggest storms of the summer halted proceedings and the day finished victories a piece. St Albans will be returning this year to resume the battle for the trophy.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches who make my life easier (Dave Tyson, Neil Fleming and Dayle Littlejohn) along with all those parents that are there supporting every game. Without these people the colts wouldn’t be where we are today. Finally, a special mention must go to Mike Parkes who is retiring from the colts’ scene after many years. His work and dedication has been greatly appreciated!!

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club

The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 190’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on

farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane.

The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday

matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband.

It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games.

In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later.

The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs six junior sides across five age groups.

We enter our Centenary Year with a thriving social membership and excellent facilities. We have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!

Leverstock Green Cycling Team 2008 Once again the cycling fraternity undertook the London to Brighton cycle ride for the British Heart Foundation and raised a substantial amount for the charity . . . All thanks to your generosity.

This year, as 008 is the cricket club's centenary year, we thought that we should undertake a ride that would stand out from the norm . . . so we are using the London to Brighton event as a warm up to a planned epic ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats. (LEJOG as it’s called in cycling circles).

LEJOG will start on August 1st and will be undertaken by myself, Kim Darker, Kevin Seggery, Steve Wright, Noel Mahon, Richard Stevens and Ian the Painter. Joining us on route will be Gavin Smith, who will ride with us for 3 days of the planned 14 days. If you feel up to it you are welcome to join us at any stage. Visit our web site www.ee008.blogspot.com to see our itinerary.

We have chosen the Hospice of St Francis as our sponsored charity and will be raising funds via our web site or by donations (cheques made payable to The Hospice of St Francis). Once again your continued support would be most welcome.

We plan to raise awareness and sponsorship for the ride over the coming months and will host a post ride party/karaoke night at the club on our return.

The cycling fraternity meets and rides most Sundays from March to October. If you would like to join us on one of the Sunday rides please contact me. Once again, many thanks for your support over the past year.

Many thanksBryan Duffell
