INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
FIVE MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
H. A. MANNING CO., publishers of Directories for over 300 Communities, present to subscribers and the general public, the latest edition of the City Directory.
Confidence in the continued growth, industry, population and wealth, and in theadvancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of t~isDirectory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting the commumtyto the world.
The position occupied by MANNING'S Directories in the estimation of the publicthroughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service, with an experienced organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel thatthe result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that theDirectory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining tothe city.
The five major departments are arranged in the following order:-I. THE DESCRIPTIVE SECTION is the first major department printed on
white paper: Information about statistical review, historical sketch, manufacturing, trade government and civic surveys, indexes, and deluxe advertising.
II. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the second major department of the Directory. This embraces the only complete list of the names and addresses of the businessand professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriateheadings - a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewisegrouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards offirms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products orservices than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent referenceadvertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sourcesof supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community the necessity ofhaving this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious.
III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business andprofessional concerns is the third major department printed on white paper. This isthe only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation andaddress of each adult resident, and the name, official personnel, nature and address ofeach firm, corporation and organization in the city.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET ANDAVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section thestreets are arranged in alphabetical order: the numbers of the residences and businessconcerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and thenames of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The namesof the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street.Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes, the indication of telephone subscribers at homes and places of business, and the phone numberif available.
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE LOCATER, on green paper, is the fifthmajor department. All listed phones for the area are arranged by exchanges and under each exehange, when available, in numerical order with the name of the phoneholder indicated.
COMMUNITY PUBLICITY - The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of theDirectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressivebusiness and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the CityDirectory as an advertising medium and community service.
PUBLISHERS' NOTE - The information in this Directory is gathered by anactual canvass and is compiled in a way to insure maximum accuracy.
The publishers cannot and do not guarantee the correctness of all informationfurnished them nor the complete absence of errors or omissions, hence no responsibility for same can be, or is assumed.
The publishers earnestly request the bringing to their attention of any inaccuracyso that it may be corrected in the next edition of the Directory.

FAITH to work everYdayThere really never was a time when "once-a-week ': religionwas enough.
But today. in our swift ly moving world . the need is greaterthan ever to put your Faith to work - all the time.
Think of today 's dismayi ng headlin es. Then thin k of themany ways th e world can be made bett er.
" But I 'm only one person," you say.
Yes, But your church or synagogue can become, with yourhelp, a rallying point for change. By join ing others who livetheir Faith, you are no longer alone in your beliefs.
Worship this week-and put your Faith to work all week long.

Among the principal products manufactured here are: addingmachines, shotguns, research instruments, heat resistant materials, powerdrive chains, lantern slides, technical mirrors, precision machine tools, scientific instruments, salt, photo engraving, books. magazines, detergents, woodworking and dairy products.
Ithaca has an unusually intelligent class of workmen. Educationaladvantages for industrial workers and their families include a liberal policyprovision for vocational education and training in public schools.
A recent development saw the formation of the Cornell Research ParkInc. with several large concerns.
There are sites available for industrial development and severalorganizations are active in the promotion of industrial expansion within theIthaca trading area. Inquiries addressed to the Tompkins County Chamberof Commerce will bring a prompt reply.

Gentlemen,
I feel that I must write and tell youthat we find the City Directory helpful inmany ways.
Many times, people who come from out oftown are looking for certain streets, or forpeople whose address they do not have and it is always a pleasure to be able to find the informationfor them in the City Directory.
In our business we use the Directory to findfirst names of customers, their addresses andoccupation for credit checks and for billing.
We are pleased to have the City Directoryavailable for our customers to use, and feel thatthis service creates good will for us.
Very truly yours,
GJR/r
